I woudn't bother with Microsoft Security Essentials - new review as of today.

Poor detection rates, lacks a lot of features, no malware detection, or heuristic abilitys.

heuristics detection is just for the tinfoil helmet brigade since all the detections I've gotten that have been through heuristics detection were false positives.

Indeed. It's child's play to make a binary that'll be undetected by 100% of anti-virus products.

completely unobtrusive antivirus

does anyone know any av software that -only- scans on demand? i want manual updates, no auto startup components or background processes or anything - literally i want to open it maybe once every half a year and scan, then i want it to have no processes or startup programs for the rest of the time.

thanks

edit: sorry double post. please delete if possible

Microsoft Security Essentials I never have any bother with. No crap bugging me every five minutes. Although it's still not what you are looking for.

Any AV can be disabled, don't see the point in not having it running on-demand though, if that makes a noticeable improvement in your PC performance then your PC is clearly garbage.

Just about every AV package can be set to on demand scanning only.

thanks for the responses. even with modules disabled, kaspersky for example wanted to scan internet, causing lagginess in multiplayer p2p flash games for example... avs just seem determined to do things even when told not to, and i'm not a fan of that. 3570k, 8gb btw - not yet garbage i hope. i just want a nice scanner to scan without bloating my system, and i don't see why that's an unusual or unreasonable desire.

ps i did mean unobtrusive, not unINtrusive -.-
