So i just finished watching the E7 movie and it was really weird. I must have been half asleep for the latter half when i watched it the first time, as there was about 50 minutes of content that i didn't remember. it's either that, or the fact that the plot is so haphazard and strung together that it's a chore to watch.
SPOILERS THOUGHTS AND MINI RANT all in one
- The larval forms of the Nirvash/The End reminds me of the giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.
- The entire film is like they chopped in existing footage and scenes from the series with original content, with no real regard for consistency.
- Hap and Stoner got smoosheeddd OUCH. That's going to rank high on the list of most gruesome deaths in anime.
- What on earth was the purpose of Anemone?
- Where did renton's vision of Dominic come from, why did he magically appear? To give some encouraging words?
- Why was she old in the beginning, and suddenly turns young again at the flick of a switch?
- Why did Eureka/the Nirvash smash into the 'Ezio Core' which looked suspiciously like the prison/core eureka is in in the final episode of the series.
- Where did the Tsunamis and global flood come from, i thought i was watching the Day After Tommorow for a second.
- How did Renton magically heal for the final scene? Moments before he was bleeding out profously.
- Why did the Nirvash go byebye?
- Why did Eureka suddenly have long hair? Why was she mute? Shellshocked? What happened there?
- What was up with the crew of the Gekko? They were all 17 apparently, an 'accident' happens and they magically age faster? Huh?
- What was up with the the woman who was one of the Sages in the series? Why was she wandering around to the old labs and stuff.
I'm sure there are more things that annoyed me, but i can't think of them at the moment. This film is one of the examples of how anime can go off on such a lopsided tangent that it's just not entertaining anymore. I'd like to think i can understand complicated plots, i watch/read/play enough sci fi and fantasy stuff, but this... blarghh.
It's like the polar opposite of the series, which is fantastic. You see the cast of characters grow and change over 50 episodes. In contrast, a film thats just under 2 hours, doesn't even come close. It just lost all of the good points in the series, even the fights were all over the place.
My verdict for anyone who hasn't dabbled in E7...
Watch the series, it's fantastic. it's an excellent romance/character drama/coming of age story/mecha bonanza with some philosophical stuff blended in. Definitely one of the best examples of the genre out there.
The film? Stay clear, it's awful. It has none of the good points of the series, it's like it's ugly cousin. I would much rather they have spent the time and energy animating 2-3 more episodes to give a proper conclusion to the series than exploring a new mythology/story in a film.
rant over
------------------------------------
Watched the first episode of Steins: Gate earlier, weird first episode. I like the character designs, first impression? Kind of reminds me of Durarara in feel. Apparently the game it's based on got high priase, so i'll have to check out the next few episodes.
Watched the second episode of A-ria the Scarlet Ammo. Silly, no brainer stuff. Not much of an episode really. Mostly just a showcase of **** being the typical loli tsundere.
