GITS
(a vision of) escaflone
appleseed
macros (+)
there anything else that I should watch?
Maybe Heroic Age?
Blu ray looks good IMHO
Watched Space Show last night,I liked it :) nice visuals especially of the village and mountains on earth ,one for me to look out for on BR i think
Rounded off the evening with the Daichis...not sure if I am going to like this or not, seems a bit too much American cartoon style

Welcome to the Space Show has English subs on it's Japanese release, the regular edition is available from places like YesAsia.

Worked my way through Madoka and a few other things over the last few days

AnoHana - Liked the second episode, definitely had a bit of nostalgia that i can relate to. I spent many an hour growing up playing Nokemon (Pokemon) on the gameboy with friends. I'm liking most of the characters so far, and it should be interesitng to see where things go.

Hanasaku Iroha - Not much happening this week, although it did introduce a new character. I'm disliking the junior chef guy more and more with each episode.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - A short series which seems to have gotten allot of hype for some reason. I thought it was great how it completely turned the whole magical girl genre on it's head, going down a pretty dark route in comparison. The story was ok, with a bit of a bittersweet ending. I thought the figjht scenes were pretty stylish and well presented. Worth a watch for anyone who hasn't seen it, it's only 12 episodes.

Been watching a couple of things ...

Brighter than the Dawning Blue ... re-watch, it's a not a deep and clever series but is a fairly standard little series about your average chap who gets a non-standard girlfriend. Reasonably fun watch with some laugh-out-loud moments.

Master of Martial Hearts ... complete train-wreck ... dubious levels of fanservice, clothes flying off at any chance, uninteresting characters and a plot which needed another episode instead of just stopping ... poor effort all round ...

Nodame Cantabile Movie 2 ... live action finale of the Nodame Cantabile series' ... excellent continuation and conclusion to the story. Looks and sounds good on BD.

The Time Traveller - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ... live action spin on TGWLTT, being released by MangaUK on DVD next week. The actress playing the lead here is the same as voiced the lead in TGWLTT but the plot is very different. It's not a bad plot although I did feel that the way the end was wrapped up was a bit weak and could have been better. It's worth a watch. especially for £11 for the UK DVD version. I watched the HK BD release.

Currently re-watching season 1 of Maria-sama as the NAS/Server/LAN are currently being to heavily worked to watch anything off disk due to some data transfers ...

Just been watching the first episode of Culture Japan on youtube, presnted by our very own Danny Choo. I've heard of it before but never bothered to watch it . It has full subtitles, so watching isn't a problem. I'll have to catch up on the other episodes. I've found it to be pretty entertaining so far, well worth a watch.

I read the storyline to this a while back and it did not seem to me to follow the story of the animé except very loosely, worth a watch you reckon ?Maybe i ought to search it out;)

I'm going to watch this, I follow Danny's blog/twitter/etc, but haven't got around to it yet. Supposedly he's currently in negations for it to be shown via Crunchyroll according to one of his updates in the last week or so.

Plot is completely different to the Anime (apart from that it involves time travel and one other factor (saying what would be a spoiler)). I would say that it is worth a watch but you need to take into account that it is a typical Japanese film in style (particularly near the end).

Normal service resumed so I watched this tonight, I actually quite liked it as an episode and in general I would say that I am liking the way things are shaping up with the series so far. What I do have to say about this series, and several others this season, is that the background art in the episodes seems to be a step up from the general level of the last few series. This series in particular seems to have a very good level of nice, good looking, art in the countryside and towns.

Other things I've been looking at this evening, (after finishing off M-S S1), were:

A Bridge to the Starry Skies ep2 ... wow we're only on episode 2 and we have how many new characters now?!? ... Ok it's a fairly generic selection and scenario so far but it's going along nicely and I'm liking it so far ... I do wonder if it could go all "nice boat" on us at some point though ...

A Channel ep3 ... I'm still liking this ... appeals to my sense of humour ...

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko ... ah, we have more characters and a bit of explanation about one of the main characters. Still fining it rather strange but in a good way.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - A short series which seems to have gotten allot of hype for some reason. I'll probably be taking a look at this tomorrow.

Ok, watched this earlier ... well it certainly took the normal points of the magical girl genre, chewed them up and spat them out. Very dark series at times and I agree with you about the ending. I found the fight sequences ... interesting ... maybe not to my taste but definitely worth watching. The series over all is definitely worth watching and you do need to watch it, especially in the last third or so, otherwise you are likely to lose track of what is going on. I don't think the series lives up to the hype it's received in some quarters, but it's rare that a series does. It's a good watch though.

Also watched the third episode of A Bridge to the Starry Skies, which is current progressing along as I would expect for it's genre, and the first couple of episodes of Moshidora which was interesting.

So i just finished watching the E7 movie and it was really weird. I must have been half asleep for the latter half when i watched it the first time, as there was about 50 minutes of content that i didn't remember. it's either that, or the fact that the plot is so haphazard and strung together that it's a chore to watch.

SPOILERS THOUGHTS AND MINI RANT all in one :p

- The larval forms of the Nirvash/The End reminds me of the giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.

- The entire film is like they chopped in existing footage and scenes from the series with original content, with no real regard for consistency.

- Hap and Stoner got smoosheeddd OUCH. That's going to rank high on the list of most gruesome deaths in anime.

- What on earth was the purpose of Anemone?

- Where did renton's vision of Dominic come from, why did he magically appear? To give some encouraging words?

- Why was she old in the beginning, and suddenly turns young again at the flick of a switch?

- Why did Eureka/the Nirvash smash into the 'Ezio Core' which looked suspiciously like the prison/core eureka is in in the final episode of the series.

- Where did the Tsunamis and global flood come from, i thought i was watching the Day After Tommorow for a second.

- How did Renton magically heal for the final scene? Moments before he was bleeding out profously.

- Why did the Nirvash go byebye?

- Why did Eureka suddenly have long hair? Why was she mute? Shellshocked? What happened there?

- What was up with the crew of the Gekko? They were all 17 apparently, an 'accident' happens and they magically age faster? Huh?

- What was up with the the woman who was one of the Sages in the series? Why was she wandering around to the old labs and stuff.

I'm sure there are more things that annoyed me, but i can't think of them at the moment. This film is one of the examples of how anime can go off on such a lopsided tangent that it's just not entertaining anymore. I'd like to think i can understand complicated plots, i watch/read/play enough sci fi and fantasy stuff, but this... blarghh.

It's like the polar opposite of the series, which is fantastic. You see the cast of characters grow and change over 50 episodes. In contrast, a film thats just under 2 hours, doesn't even come close. It just lost all of the good points in the series, even the fights were all over the place.

My verdict for anyone who hasn't dabbled in E7...

Watch the series, it's fantastic. it's an excellent romance/character drama/coming of age story/mecha bonanza with some philosophical stuff blended in. Definitely one of the best examples of the genre out there.

The film? Stay clear, it's awful. It has none of the good points of the series, it's like it's ugly cousin. I would much rather they have spent the time and energy animating 2-3 more episodes to give a proper conclusion to the series than exploring a new mythology/story in a film.

rant over :p

------------------------------------

Watched the first episode of Steins: Gate earlier, weird first episode. I like the character designs, first impression? Kind of reminds me of Durarara in feel. Apparently the game it's based on got high priase, so i'll have to check out the next few episodes.

Watched the second episode of A-ria the Scarlet Ammo. Silly, no brainer stuff. Not much of an episode really. Mostly just a showcase of **** being the typical loli tsundere.

I think that the state of Eureka and Renton in the last scene is due to the effects of what has just come before ... but I agree with your overall assessment though. I like the series for Eureka 7, it's long but it's a great story and I much prefer it over some of the other big series, but the film ... is confusing for those who do know the series due to the things left out or changed and confusing for those who haven't seen the series due to it's confusing disjointed plot ...

I found the first episode of Steins;Gate ... rather confusing. I think it is one of those series where it's going to take 4-5 episodes to really pick up what is going on ...

I didn't know there was such a thing as a "typical Japanese film" - I once went to a Takashi Miike triple bill - the first movie was a romantic comedy, the second was a children's film with cutesy Muppet-style puppets, and the third was Visitor Q....

Let me put it this way .... don't expect a happy ending with all the loose ends neatly tied up as they would be in a western film .... :)

I guess it depends on what sorts of films you watch really :)

Am slowly watching through Toaru Majutsu no Index atm, like I'd mentioned I was planning to. It hasn't grabbed me yet in the way I was expecting, but its not bad.

I know this is a lazy question, but does anyone know a site that has reviews of all of last season's shows catalogued, I don't want too many spoilers, but it'd be nice to have a quick glance and find out which of last season's shows are really worth a watch :)

Looking at this thread has reminded me that even though I've had the last 2 weeks off, I still haven't watched anymore of the 2 anime programs I'm watching at the moment (Code Geass R1 and Highschool Of The Dead) >___>.

Got a few others waiting after them, and after that I might have to go on a finding spree for others >_>.

29 April 2011
  • Started translation of volume 28
  • MS next chpt has been started ;)

Nice ... the situation with the movie is a bit unclear at the moment, it's up for pre-order but only through one shop at the moment (which don't ship internationally) and not listed on AmazonJP etc ...

Currently just finished getting through Clannad AS on BD (very, very, nice :D, looks and sounds **** good and the subtitles are perfectly fine on the release) and Black Rock Shooter on BD.

edit: Alex, most of the reviews of the previous season are going to be packed full of spoilers at this point.

Thanks Andi, I figured that would be the case but occasionally you get reviews which try to stop spoiling the main story, so I thought id ask. I guess it'll just be a case of reading the season listing and going from there.

Well, from the Winter things I watched (either fully or in part) I'd make the following comments:

Rio - Rainbow Gate .... fairly weak and fan-servicey (not unsurprising as the main character is based on a character from pachinko games).

Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season .... Good continuation of the first series. Slice of life romance series about a girl with no social skills. It's good if you like that sort of thing but you need to see season 1 first.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica .... turns the magical genre on it's head and destroys and pre-conceptions. Very dark in places and well worth a watch.

IS: Infinite Stratos .... Basic mecha harem comedy. Male character is the only guy who can pilot them so is at an academy learning how to do so with various female characters. I quite enjoyed this series as light relief.

Yumekui Merry .... I haven't seen this all yet but what I have seen has been good so far.

Gosick .... still airing.

Freezing .... fanservice and violence ... if you like those things then you might like this. You'll want the uncensored version.

Onii-chan no Koyo nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!! .... stupidly long title. Perverted sister with a brother complex. Perverted brother. Not as bad as it could have been and the art style for the characters is a matter of taste (they're a bit gangly). It's ok but not brilliant.

Dragon Crisis! .... Fighting, magical powers, dragons ... and not a fantasy series. I quite enjoyed this. It's not big and clever but it's a reasonable watch.

Kore wa Zombie desu ka? .... about a boy who ends up as a zombie. I've only seen the first couple of episodes so far and it seemed ok.

Fractale .... very good, but short, series set on a planet in the future where technology has taken on a religious overtone. I'd recommend this.

Hourou Musuko (aka Wandering Son) .... about cross dressing middle school students. Very laid back relaxed series with a gentle art style. I'd recommend it but it is very much a matter of taste with this one. It is really a slice of life series with little drama and no fanservice/action.
