In the UK Amazon, Play, Zavvi/TheHut and United Publications are worth a look. Most of the big DVD sellers have at least a little.

Yeah i noticed they had most of the popular stuff, was hoping there would be some specialist shops that had a bigger selection and where prices were a little more wallet friendly :)

Cheers Alex

Erm ... whilst what you say is correct about Zavvi etc United Publications is a specialist online shop and has just about everything anime/manga which is in print(1).

Other options are:
TRSI (US)
Anime Online (not used)

and Otaku.co.uk tends to have some titles available (although I tend to use them more for artbooks).

Although in all cases you'll have to check the products you look at to see if they are dubbed as well as subbed.

(1) although they don't seem to list the new US BD releases for The Laughing Man, Individual Eleven and Solid State Society for some reason.

I have to admit that my first thought is .... so how much of it will turn out to be dubious hentai / ecchi stuff which obviously would be a problem with Customs.

Ran out of time to marathon Rec as I ended up catching up with a friend with a beer due to the weather. Did manage to finish Kashimashi though. After Brighter... I was a little worried about how the series would hold together, but luckily, despite some issues it largely held together reasonably well, even if the OVA did feel a bit tacked on to follow both routes.

Not an classic or a favourite, but certainly charming enough. Would perhaps give it 6.5-7/10.

I do like Kashimashi, it's a nice fairly laid back series ... but the main character defines indecisiveness ...

Yeah, this was my thought too. Another site mentioned it was supposedly a Puella doujin, which would go with stuff customs might not like.

Did make me a little thankful though as I took the S&W manga I was given for xmas with me on holiday to read, and although thats not dubious and all art is in context, it is mature rated for the subject and some of the art and it makes me wonder if that would also fall foul on some countries' customs, when stories like this air.

True, but then you could argue the same for a lot of main characters in harem/romance dramas so it didnt really surprise or bother me, because least it wasnt always thrust in your face as a focus. Given the pretext of the series I could forgive the guy some indecisiveness too, although the OVA smacked of trying to offer both routes.

Will have to give them a holler to see if they are getting the new Spice and Wolf artbook due soon.
Theyre also the first site I‘ve seen with the comic collection.

How does the manga compare to the Anime? She's only really naked a lot in the first couple of episodes and towards the end of the second season she's almost completely covered up the whole time!

So got an email back from MVM for my enquiring about Serial Experiments Lain;

Unfortunately our UK rights for Lain expired some time ago. After the collapse of Geneon rights now sit with Universal (Japan) and any relicensing is proving difficult.

Sad panda :(

It's a similar situation, but the manga takes longer/runs slower in some ways so sometimes you see a little more in terms of artwork (as in an event that might only be 10 seconds in the anime might be a few pages of the manga). I've read the first two manga volumes now, and we've not reached the end of [novel] book 1, I think that'll be volume 3.
As far as I can see, all 4 books released so far are listed as rating mature on Yen Press's site, which might mean the artwork is sometimes a little more daring than the anime, because it's the artist's take on a scene, or how Holo might act in a given situation.
It's not really drawn provocatively, but even if its not drawn for ecchi purposes (same as with the anime), I wonder whether that'd be enough to cause an issue.

Hopefully not, but cases like the above do make you wonder (although obviously if it turns out he had hardcore material on his desktop, then its a bit of a different ballgame haha).

It's as if Japanese companies don't want to make money.... or better yet release Japanese releases with english subs at the very least then companies like MVM can be a redistributer...

Although its second hand. CEX/Webuy seem to have a few copies in a few stores :)
Harlowe, Sunderland and Yeovil apparently, if you can't find a copy on eBay new.

On another note, finished my REC marathon this afternoon. Quite liked it, cheered me up nicely :)

I guess the hands of the Japanese base is tied by what US headquarters thinks is "cost effective". Simply not enough call for a re-run of region 2. It's a shame that Universal picked up such a large chunk of Geneon's catalogue as there's probably a few more titles that'll never again see the light of day.

Cheers, I'll look into them now.

In the meantime I've ordered Ergo Proxy for my Cyberpunk/Dystopian sci fi fix.

Stopped watching anime after 2006. 2007's season didn't really interest me and i haven't been back. However seen an advert today for HMV with Akira in blue ray which might tempt me back.

Anything decent happen in the last 5 years? I was pretty much in love with black lagoon/Ergo Proxy/ Kanon 2006 etc.

If you enjoyed Kanon then you will enjoy Clannad, and Clannad After Story, it is a very similar style, just taken to a whole new level. Also give Angel Beats! a go too.

Toradora, Spice and Wolf and Bakemonogatari also definitely worth a look at if you're after post 2006 material.
If you are a film guy TGTLTT/Summer Wars are also worth a look, especially on offer at seven quid the pair on bluray.

Started both Durarara and Basilisk this evening with my brothers. Both look interesting and different enough I won't find them grueling to watch at the same time.
I watched a Shinobi film last year that wasn't that great, realized almost as soon as I started watching this they must be based off the same source. Hopefully the series' length will lend itself to telling a stronger story, as I understand Basilisk tends to get good reviews.

And Universal (et al) wonder why there's such a large number of people downloading things instead of buying them....it's because there's no other way to get the damn thing

You also have to wonder what was the point in picking up the r2 catalogue if they're not going to do anything with it.....

Hi, can someone help me track down the name of an anime series that I hadn't finished. It progressed with three children, one weak, one looking 'out' for the weak, and a female. The weak child paints pictures of things to come, and comes to be known as satan, as I recall? One kid enrolling in some kind of warriors academy and being injured badly in an assault against his friend (satan) who turns out to be the cause of a massacre in a village. And the female playing a role as cleopatra, who seems to rule over these warriors, including her friend. She, her subordinates and her warrior friend lead an offensive against their young friend. The kid warrior seemed to have a certain power, that was discovered by what would be his mentor, when he saved a village holding a dam that was bursting over his home village. That's all I can really think of, any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

did anyone else order from 'the hut' group (send it, zavvi etc) when they were doing their offers. Originally was going to use send it and then found they had the hidden postage fees (no mention of the PER ITEM postage until checkout), so went with zavvi as it was cheaper all in.

They've got to be the worst company I've dealt with in terms of delivery time, I've had stuff from china quicker.... it makes it even worse when they don't appear to dispatch items till they're all in and then they go and split them up and dispatch them on different days. Been waiting over a week and they still haven't dispatched my blu ray and that's been ready to dispatch for nearly a week!

If this is normal I'm going to say sod the savings and just get it from my normal places next time.. they can't have heard of the idea of keeping the customers happy and they'll come back....

You gets what you pay for ... this is why I tend to go with vendors I'm happy with the service from even if they are slightly more expensive ....

I wont use several stores due to poor service from them in the past, no matter how cheap they are, (e.g. Zavvi).

Mmm Zavvi are a bit marmite. They can be good with their prices, and i've ordered games and dvd's off of them with no problem. Then again, i had the experience of trying to return an item for a refund, it took ages for one of their service reps to reply to my request.

My copy of Eden of the East was posted from them yesterday, even though it said it would be dispatchedc several days ago. They're a good website to use, if you aren't in a hurry for stuff, kind of like Play.

Still, nothing beats Amazon. I never bother with 1st class delivery because 99% of stuff i get from them is pretty prompt in arriving.
