Maybe a bit off-topic, but anyone got any hints for sourcing Japanese-language manga books/comics in the UK? I'm interested in picking a few up to put a bit of fun/novelty into my kanji and vocabulary work.

Thing is, I've searched for the terms in Google, but only found a small handful of shops with fairly paltry stock and most seem to be either very expensive, stock only English language books, or charge the Earth for delivery.

I use bk1 as they have the most reasonable shipping from what I've seen, especially if you use the slowest option.

Note that you'll want to search by the Japanese title or ISBN, and you can use the rikaichan extension for Firefox if you need help with the kanji on the site.

It's still not going to be cheap though. I paid 2985 yen shipping (~£24) for five books, though one of them was an 1100 page dictionary and this wasn't using the slowest/cheapest shipping option. Shipping by sea is considerably cheaper, but also takes a lot longer.

Heh didn't Outlaw Star used to be on C4 way back when in the early hours of the AM...hmmm could be thinking of something else tho.

I remember it on CNX however I first saw it before then but can't remember where

Ah yes, I remember watching the anime season on 4 late on Friday nights - Oedo 808 etc. :D - along with the the martial arts and Godzilla seasons!

Just didn't really get on with it. I own the Geneon release and I've tried watching it several times but never really get passed the first few episodes ...

Well I know that the Japan Centre in the London has a small bookshop area but I've only really browsed it if I've popped in in person. Most of the Japanese books I've ordered have been artbooks, via places like otaku.co.uk or, the now sadly defunct, benippon.com or via Japanese sellers on eBay.

bk1 .... otherwise known as the site I always forget ... then spend days trying to remember the name of it ... :p

Great, thanks! Just had a browse. Needed rikaikun to work overtime to get through it. I guess I need the kanji workout! Looks good. They seem to have a couple of the things I'm looking for. Cheers!

Decided to check out Hen Semi as the concept sounded like a mix of Seitokai Yakuindomo and Genshiken, both of which I liked... I'm not sure whether to say lol or wtf after the first episode. It's like the girls from Seitokai grew up and got 5/6 years more perverted and then applied to almost the entire cast. I know its meant to be a comedy... but its pretty out there to say the least, and certainly I'm sure satire some of the more out there stereotypes in an OTT fashion.

Just finished watching it the other day, very funny and as you said wtf - for some reason can't help smirking at the end titles and the fish!

Very excited! Now ordered first couple of volumes of Doraemon and Crayon Shinchan in Japanese (I'm only lower intermediate level, so need to start with something fairly basic). Really looking forward to adding this to my learning. Cheers for the pointer, NuclearWinter! :D

It's a very difficult anime to get into but personally I find it very well written and the artwork is beautiful (to my taste.)

日本語を習うのはとても面白くて楽しいけど、漢字は確かに覚えにくいと思う。 頑張って!

Watching Mushi-Shi as well and damn its nice and melow series but damn the girl with the eyes, the scene where the mushi come out of the eyes was bloody scary looking and im not easily shocked. :D

Glad to see someone here is watching Mushishi! It's a work of art and one of the best things to have come from the anime medium.

I've made a start on Haruhi S2 now, which is looking fun (although i'm just about at the end of the first enless 8 episode, so how I'll feel in another 7 episodes is anyones guess).

I've also made a start on sorting out my anime...

So far I make it duplicates of
Rune Soldier Louie 1-3 (UK)
Kanon 1
Witchblade 1-3 UK
Witchblade 1 UK (Revelation mucked around with the Witchblade and a couple of other licences - iirc they did 1,2 and 3, then 1-3, then a complete set with no 4 or 5 singles).
Tusbasa - I think I've got duplicates of most of the first season*.
Full metal Alchemist 6 and 10 US I think
She the Ultimate Weapon main series, R4
Blugeoning angel Dokura chan sub only
Clannad and After Story R1
Daphne in the Brilliant Blue disc 1 uk
BGC 2040 full series R4
Nadesico full series R4

And of course Evangelion, which i've got as
R1 Perfect Collection (original black box set)
R1 Platinum editions in R1 box
R2 UK Platinum tin edition (slightly dinged)
And to top the space issue off, the R1 Paul Champaign box (which I think is going to get used for the new movies).

Most of the dupes have been where I've either run into problems getting the rest of the UK series (grrrr revelation), or got multiple dupes cheaper than the rest of the series (or indeed very cheap as a complete dupe) and some i'm going to keep because I like the series that much (I'll probably keep Eva PC and R2 tin).

I may offer some of them up as freebies in the MM, as I can't be bothered selling them and to be honest single discs tend not to be worth much.

*There is a very good chance i've actually got dupes of all the first season and a couple of double dupes (iirc there was about a 6 month gap between two discs, and they did a complete first season for only a couple of pounds more than the last disc...then the US double season box was the cheapest way to get the second season).

I will give it another go at some point as I haven't written it off completely.

I actively didn't like this at all and dropped it after a few episodes. Generally didn't find it very funny at all.

Need to go back and finish this as I've only seen the first half before getting side tracked onto other things. It did look very good from what I remember though.

Werewolf, I'd recommend watching all of the Endless Eight, at least the first time. There are differences with each episode and you do get the feel then of the building realisation that something is wrong as things repeat themselves.

I'm not bad on duplicates at the moment, most of mine are where I've picked up the BD version of something I've already got on DVD or I've picked up a subbed foreign release which has then been picked up in west, (worst case is of course Clannad/Clannad AS with JP LE DVDs, US Subbed DVD release & JP BD's). I think mainly this is because I didn't really follow the UK singles market that much, due to the expense and release times compared with the US market.

Have to admit not sure how far Ill get either.

Only duplicate discs Ive got are Spice and Wolf but as both brothers like it, that's no biggy.
@Werewolf - looking forward to seeing just how many dupes you have when I get back off hols next week haha

That's quite an impressive list of dupes. Its one thing i try to avoid atm with all the re-releases onto Blu-ray, have too much building work going on to be buying Blu-ray versions of what i have already. But sometimes it just has to be done :)

Hmm, Nadesico, i vaguely remember this being shown on Sci-Fi channel many years ago, along with cowboy bebop. Saved me some money not having to buy the discs :)

Also liked your storage systems, has given me an (expensive) idea for my own system. Plus the cost of a NAS to start ripping the most viewed disc's. Could get very expensive :)

Re my drawers, a couple of shots of one of them :p

The top two drawers hold ~70 discs each (in standard 14mm packaging), but I allowed enough room for odd size boxes, and tins as well (there is about 30 extra width and heigh clearance), as that was the mistake I made on my original unit.
The bottom only has room for about 50 discs as I had to allow room to run cables etc behind it.

I've actually still got the templates in the garage, so in theory it's a couple of afternoons work for me to make another unit with the router when i'm fit enough to do it :) (I deliberately made the choice to create templates as it means I can run off identical units without meaning up every time).

I've still got enough of the hardware (apart from the wheels), to make another 4-5 units, as I bought 20 sets of the long runners, and 4 or 5 sets of the short ones.

Where did you get your FMA tins? or do all the series box sets come like that?
