I've read the first three volumes of the English language release (aka Bunny Drop). I like it, it has a nice gentle vibe and I like the humour. Yen Press have volume 4 scheduled for December which I already have pre-ordered. The anime series, currently airing, is good too ...

@Andarial
Vol 28 ...
Beat me to it,been keeping an eye on there for ages too ;)
Edit:good day today.Found another vol of Yotsaba is out :D

Hmmm ... will be interesting to see if Werewolf has an issue with his copy ... possibly a firmware update needed for compatibility? (no really I agree it's probably a Manga Entertainment screw up ;))

Both my multiregion BD players are Panasonics, (auto DVD switching, manual BD switching) .... seem pretty reasonable and haven't given me any problems, apart from having to replace a remote but that was my fault. Purchased them online from a store in Peterborough, which I previous bought multi-region DVD players from, ... but which I can't link to from here ...

There hasn't been a firmware update for my BD player in over a year (plus I don't want to risk updating since I have it set region free for DVD's and I don't know if they've changed the code since) but this isn't the first time I've had issues with a manga entertainment BD (the sync issues on FMA:B part 1 if you try to play the disc with Japanese audio).

I'm also not that fond of panasonic since I have a DVD/VCR combi and the layer hand off on that is appalling and from what I remember those pre-modified panasonic BD players are expensive (my other option is to build a HTPC system with twin BD drives (if that can get me past the region locking issue) but I can only take advantage of that once I get a HDTV).

The HOTD thing looks like it may be player specific.

On my one it plays the warning, then holds for a few seconds before going on to a Madman, then Manga logo, before finally getting to the main menu.

The pause I'm seeing isn't unusual in my experience with blu-rays, as iirc it can be the player loading up content etc (a couple of my early film buys had pauses that lasted long enough that at first I thought the disc was faulty). or doing something in the background (I think it's universal discs that tend to take an age to load if the player is connected to the net, as it checks for new trailers or something).

Actually it isn't player specific since I decided to run the disc again and after a 15 second wait it finally changed over to chapter 2 and continued on after that (plus my BD player isn't connected to the net so it is most likely to be a issue with the authoring and not any specific player).

Haven't noticed any layer hand off issues with my kit but you are right that it can be pricey from pre-modified units, (a quick look on the site in question lists one Panasonic for ~£180 and some Sony's ~£300-400 as well as a few others).

On the HTPC front you can use AnyDVD HD to allow playback of multiple BD regions with just a single drive.

Finished re-watching Nodame Cantabile season 1 earlier. It's my favourite of the Nodame Cantabile seasons and whilst the R3 release is ok it would be nice if Sony Pictures weren't sitting on the license so we could get a proper R1 release with better subtitles. No major issues with the subtitles but some of the conventions used in them are a bit ... different (and not having a chapter point at the end of the OP is really annoying). Great series though with nice music.

Currently starting a re-watch of Shuffle ... which so far has reminded me about all the things that irritated me about it the first time ...

The region is often rediculously easy to hack/reset too, (I know with PDVD8 I could do it by just deleting a hidden file!) as it tends to be done via software rather than the hardlock we saw with DVDs.

Well just opened up the artbook and all I can say is :o

It's REALLY nice, all the paper feels of high quality, and all the prints look excellent and sharp, no poor reproductions here! It's much thicker than the first art/guidebook as it seems to span the series; having virtually all the book covers, DVD artwork etc, it's also got a load of the greyscale drawings done for the series. Gotta say, even when they're not in colour they look great, and some of the coloured pieces are immense. The pictures range from small doodles/jots, all the way up to full double A4 coloured prints. There's also a couple of bits towards the back that look like they were artwork drawn for the comic one shots :)

About the only thing it's missing is it's not hardback, like a lot of hardback's its even got a seperate sleeve, with a more simplistic cover underneath.

Really, really nice, which I'm glad of as it did cost me quite a bit, I can completely see why it's fairly expensive now though, I'm almost afraid to look at it too much incase I damage it haha :)

I'm really not sure where I'd start if I was to take some pictures!

I received my copy of this book today (RM tried to deliver it on Wednesday but I wasn't in so got it re-delivered today ... not bad for basic registered Air Mail). You are right it is a really nice artbook with some very nice pictures in it.

Well, I recently finished watching Planetes (which was very good) and spotted this rather topical article:

That series was the first thing I thought of when I saw the story on the BBC.

Well my system is a few years old and I only use it for recording now (except for when I want to play the ghost in the shell first season discs which had issues playing certain episodes without problems) plus blu ray systems can handle PTP layer hand overs without any stuttering plus I managed to find the store you mentioned (thanks to a little google work) and I'll just invest in a stand alone multi region player since a majority of what they have would cost less then a self built HTPC system with just one blu ray drive.

That news bit had me thinking pretty much the same thing :)
It's been a known upcoming problem for a very long time (IIRC some of the sci-fi authors have had it as a problem from at least the 80's on), and is one of the reasons launch windows for satellites and other space craft have to be so carefully planned.

It's a good series, if a little slow to get going.

It was something we discussed on one of my uni courses back in the mid-90's.

What course did you take? (if you don't mind me asking?)

In anime news, apparently Sentai have announced they've Licence Rescued Rozen Maiden.
However they've not only LR'd both the original Geneon releases, but:
Licensed Ouvertüre
Will be having Ouvertüre dubbed by Bang Zoom (same studio that did the English dub for the other parts of it).
Will be releasing Ouvertüre both as part of the complete set, and as a separate disc for those that already have the Geneon releases of the rest of it.

MPhys Astrophysics, (I was on one of the first runs of these types of four year extended courses)

Nice, it's good to see that they are going to release the OVA separately as well as in the complete set so that people, like me, who already have both seasons can pick it up without having to double dip on the rest of the title.

Well finished a couple of things in the last day or so ....

Princess Jellyfish ... ok, I tried watching this previously and lasted about two episodes before stopping. This time I made the effort and watched it all the way through ... and was pleasantly surprised. Yes the characters are generally unlikeable and the plot isn't particularly deep but overall it was an entertaining watch.

Shuffle ... I wish I could say the same for this. We'll say it was a re-watch (although I'm pretty sure I dozed through several episodes the first time). It's sad as on paper this series ticks all the boxes for the sort of series which I like ... I should like it but I just find it annoying ... Normally in this type of show just the male lead is indecisive, here it's nigh on most of the cast, most of the characters were pretty unlikeable (to the extent that instead of sympathising with then you just wanted them to stfu), the plot was pretty weak, seemed drawn out and overdid the angst and the fanservice was too gratuitous. On top of that the animation isn't very good at times and there's terrible banding in some scenes. I would like to like the show ... but I just can't.

Watched 'Arrietty this evening with my mate. Gotta say, with the DTS sound track and surround, and relaxing with a beer, I really enjoyed this movie.

Absolutely loved the folk-esque soundtrack, which was probably the standout part of the movie to me, and even though it has issues and holes, its still a really enjoyable movie. Definately worth giving the surround sound 'cinema' treatment with darkened room and the sound all around you.

This and Fedex realising they couldn't charge me extra (as per the invoice) for my S&W artbook made a nice change to what had been a relatively sh***y day heh

Ah, so Fedex struck again then ....

I like Arrietty and thought it was a very Ghibli spin on the original story (in a good way) but over all the story seemed unfinished to me and could have carried on further.

Watched the latest Hanasaku Iroha earlier. Nice episode after the emotional downs of the end of the last episode. This episode is mostly following two unlikely pairs, Ohana and Takako and Ko and Ohana's Mum. Has some amusing parts as Ohana and Takako get used to now being related, Takako taking action (a definite "good job" moment) and Ko being worried that Ohana's Mum was going to show him porn. Episode was a definite pick me up after the last one and a good fun watch.

Well surprisingly FedEx didn't try to charge me. I was ready to receive the invoice and have to fight charges but I got the slip through and there was no attempt to charge me as there was no customs charges so they didn't appear to have added any extra anywhere. Was a pleasant surprise I wasn't going to have to argue!

In regards to Arrietty, I know what you mean, it could have continued further so you found out about the new home, what happened to Sho etc, but I suppose they were aiming for a specific length and it at least ended on a positive note and there were worse places they could have stopped. It's a fairly traditional Asian 'we could make a sequel/unfinished business' ending in that sense.

Finished re-watch of True Tears earlier. Nice little series about love, loss and .... chickens ... It's your usual sort of high school love quadrangles plus avian-ness and is very much a drama over a comedy animes of this sort of thing tend to turn into. For the most part the animation is pretty good too.

Oh yes the chickens! :D Not sure why but I always loved it when she sang that cockroach song, got stuck in my head which was slightly annoying.

Just finished Planetes tonight, not a bad series, I had decided to watch it dubbed which I really didn't find bad to do. Wanted something I didn't need to concentrate so much on, ie reading subs. Now not sure what to go onto really!
