The AMD Driver Thread

That article is kind of dreadful, it basically says 1 guy on twitter had a problem with his aya neo after installing new drivers. And that's it. That's the whole story.

We really are deep into the scraping the Internet for anything that we can twist into a inflammatory headline phase of journalism. Its all so depressing. I feel like in the last few years the Internet has basically become unusable for actually getting good information

Why would that ever stop them from trying to make it a huge thing?

One repair guy comments in passing "we have had a couple of AMD GPU's with cracked dies, they all came from the same guy"

Some random hardware forum contributor thinks about it for 23 seconds before posting "yeah that's probably due to crypto miners pressure washing the GPU's before flogging them on EBay"

Next thing you know 75% of mainstream tech journos have garbage articles with click bait titles on every social media platform screaming about how peoples AMD GPU dies are cracking, is it a manufacturing fault? is it the drivers? Why don't AMD apologise and refund RX 6000 series customers, Der8uer publishes a video in which he claims that after extensive testing with specialist equipment he can prove....... wait for it ................................. Its AMD's drivers that are the problem.

Guess what it turns out it was..... yes that's right.

I cannot understand how anyone can take any of these clowns seriously at this point, especially that Der8uer moron.

Anyone else remember the days when Tom's was the go to site for sensible reviews and articles instead of clickbait garbage? Anyway at least the idle power issues appear to be fixed in one or other of the driver updates if theres nothing running in the background its pootling along on just a few watts

Yep. My bro a few months back went from a 6950XT (developed a fault, couldn't get a replacement, blah blah blah) to some Nvidia card (I forget which one... one of the ones without much VRAM) and he said the exact same thing. He said it was shocking. I did try and warn him. lol.

Yes configure settings and done-because that's all it can do, :( which is shocking beyond lol.

Adrenaline is miles ahead of NvCP, when you hit Adrenaline shortcut, it's open and ready to go.

It is a full on one stop AMD cpu/gpu (highly configurable) tuning/oc'ing/uv/data suite that is way way beyond Nv CP!

Zero third party monitoring/oc tools needed, configure away in AMD CP, launch new game, play it for about an hour and:
RatchetClank_Rift_Apart.png

That's just one example of many.

Nv needs third party tools to gather that data, uv, oc, that can cause game issues, but you won't know the power of Adrenaline unless you go AMD and find out for yourself of what it can do, Adrenaline is a really powerful software suite.:)

That's because you have to use third party tools with Nvidia for a lot of this things you can do within AMD Adrenaline

Exactly. I've not had any need for any third party OC tools since AMD introduced Wattman :-)

  • Application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Starcraft II™ on Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs.
  • Intermittent corruption may be observed playing Rocket League™ with Bloom set to Off on some AMD Graphics Products, such as the Radeon™ RX 6900 XT.
  • Performance drop may be experienced for various games on AMD Ryzen™ processors with Radeon™ 700M series GPUS.

Known Issues​

  • Performance Metrics Overlay may report N/A for FPS on various games.
  • Audio may intermittently become out of sync with video when recording from AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition with AV1 codec.
  • Display may not reach correct brightness with certain games on some SAMSUNG™ FreeSync Premium Pro displays and TVs when local dimming is enabled.
  • Application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Baldur's Gate 3 with DirectX® 11 API set on certain systems with Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs.

Important Notes​

  • Factory Reset has been temporarily disabled as a precautionary measure while we address isolated installation issues that have been reported during PC upgrades. Users may use AMD Cleanup Utility as a temporary option.
 
Moving from nvidia to AMD recently was a bit of a change for me on the software side;

i) I don't need to go to the Microsoft store to get the control software for my graphics card, which (obviously) is not made by Microsoft. It's just another way to force people into Microsoft's ever-increasing attempt to make PC a closed platform so Microsoft can profit more from their spyware.
ii) It loads faster.
iii) It has significantly more functionality.

I don't much care about the UI (although AMD's is far better than nvidia's) but I do care about the above.

As for the drivers themselves, they work. Same as nvidia's drivers in that way.

Safe mode, clean the other company's drivers with DDU, disconnect from the net so that Windows won't autoinstall whatever drivers it decides (which might or might not be the right ones), reboot, install new drivers, reboot, job done. The usual process. It kept my res and desktop settings, which is a nice change from the last time I changed manufacturers. That's probably a Windows change, though.

I was going to fiddle with settings for hours to get some small improvements, but for some reason my attention was attracted to one of the (too many) games in my libraries that I hadn't got around to playing and I ended up playing that instead. All I did was undervolt the GPU a bit because that's my usual first step. Which increased the clock speed. I was expecting it to reduce power usage and temps, but graphics cards auto-overclock themselves even more nowadays. Which is more efficient and I like it...but it does take away a bit of the fun. I sort of miss the days when major performance improvements were possible if you got lucky with the silicon lottery and had better than adequate cooling.
 
Have been having ongoing AMD driver woes since resurrecting my desktop PC last week. Randomly getting a full system freeze during very low intensity stuff (basically just using the browser for work) only solved by rebooting and when checking the event log have found this little nugget as the only issue being listed "Display driver amdwddmg stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

System is:

Ryzen 5 4500
Radeon RX550 - 4GB
16GB 2666 RAM
500GB Samsung 980 nvme
dual 24"1080p monitors

Have cleaned/reinstalled drivers a few times, adjusted power profiles and even switched monitor cables, all to no avail, random system freeze/lockups continued unexpectedly.

Last thing to check is the PSU, mainly as I checked the other day and realised that I purchased my solidasarock 500w PSU in 2008 :o

Shiny new modular PSU is being delivered this afternoon, so hoping it'll actually make my system stable. If not then I'll be heavily considering a switch to an Nvidia card.
