The AMD Driver Thread

This was posted on the forum some time ago by AMDMatt if I remember right. there certainly does seem to be a lack of options for some.

1920 X 1080 @ 120Hz will only open up two VSR modes:

1920 X 1200 @ 120Hz
2048 X 1536 @ 120Hz

On Nvidia you can choose right up to 3840x2160 @ 120hz

I don't understand why there is a limit I'm running a 60hz 1920x1080 monitor that registers as 75hz.

And yea the 55-90 fps limit for frame limit is downright stupid. What VSR mode exactly do you use then? Also this is what they include on the webpage for FRTC.

They only support 60hz and 75hz lol!!

I'm not sure why vsr mode would have a limit on fps at 4k with a 120/144hz screen but not a 60 hz, I tested 4k like you mentioned and both Steam and Fraps show the fps as being beyond 250 to 300 a lot of the time. I suppose because what they're showing is not what's being put out there may be a physical limit to what you actually get but you'll need someone with a 120+ hz 1080p monitor and a better way to read the fps to know for sure.

EDIT: When I actually think about it a bit more how I'm testing doesn't determine anything.

I had a 290 before this 970 and didn't find any limits, was running Dirt 3 @ 1440P VSR at insane FPS, over 150, even at 1800P i was still pushing past 80

From what i understand it's not the fps that's limited it's the Hz. You will still be running at whatever fps you want but if you had a 1080p 144hz monitor and used VSR to up the resolution to 4k you would be limited to 60hz.

Same, it lastest longer than before to be fair but still crashed. I had my hopes up!

Seems to work, if I start in safemode. Then up the graphics a little. Shame as it plays smooth with most maxed, it just crashes eventually :(

Hope it gets sorted soon, feels like a massive waste of money.

I have a 1080P 60Hz Screen, VSR 1440P over 150 FPS, 1800P over 80 FPS in Dirt3.

It's not the Fps that's limited though it's the Hz. I have a 60hz screen but can run whatever fps my card will reach. If i enabled v-sync i would run at 60fps. What i think he's trying to say is with dsr on the Nvidia side he could use a 1080p 144hz to get to 4k and still have the 144hz where as on the amd side he would be limited to 60hz. If you then wanted to use V-Sync he would be limited to 60fps on the amd side where as nvidia he would have the 144fps.

In Shooters the last thing you want is Vsync at any FPS.

For anything els maybe ask AMD to turn the Dynamic Frame Rate limiter up to 144 FPS, its at 95 FPS i think its as a power saving feature.

Yea i agree.

Just wanted to post this here for someone to see and maybe correct me. Do AMD have plans to actually support HFR monitors for thier tech? Below i will list two things that are unfinnshed/broken.

VSR has no support for higher frame rates or 4K unlike Nvidia where i run 4k@120
VSR also has no support for 21:9 resolutions unlike Nvidia
Frame rate control has a upper limit of 90 useless for anyone on 120/144 monitors

Is this still the case currently? And do they ever plan to take the features seriously? I mean frame rate does not even work on DX9 either!

I think the confusion that people are having is he mentions higher frame rates at 4k instead of refresh rate.

It's not for that reason as it's on a slider so you can do what number you want.

Maybe there's some other limitation to why the fps roof is 95 (my games sit at 94 according to fraps)

Apparently even if you have a high hz screen the VSR software itself has a 60hz limit when pushing the higher res frames.

I cannot play GTA V anymore :/

My game crashes if I try to change session, join a heist or a mission and sometimes even when some of the free roam events starts (like when I became the beast, the game crashed)

Already tried 15.7, 15.7.1, 15.8, 15.9 and 15.9.1

I think the whole thing is slighty confusing, But the AMD spec sheet for VSR does say if you use V-Sync 1080p @ 120hz you cannot choose 4K. I did this and do this for quite a few games INC BF4 i can pull 90fps in that game on a single 980. On AMD using V-Sync you do not even get to choose 4K, You might get unlocked fps but your res is limited to whatever it is 2048 X 1536 @ 120Hz. This is complete pants for BF4 because that game on my panel has jaggies even at 4x AA. Ingame version is a blurry mess compared to DSR.

Also that comment about V-Sync in shooters? I have used V-Sync all of my life and i can tell you not once did it impede me back when i played high level shooters like CS, Chivalry or L4D i never realy went below 2:1 KDR sometimes 3:1 or 4:1.

Lets not get into AMD vs Nvidia Image quality, i have my own views on that... the whole thread will blow up.

I play anything but shooters with V-Sync, for me at least there is a noticeable latency in BF4 with V-Sync on.

Yea i feel it too it used to feel like a brick @ 60hz but now less so. Honestly i rarely swipe anymore i am the kind of person who when something happens my instinct is to duck and tap two bullets to the chest.

I am not saying either that DSR is superior to VSR in IQ, That comment about ingame means the BF4 and Mordor downsampling being vastly inferior to DSR quality. I cannot play BF4 with 1080p 4x AA or even with 200%, It HAS to be DSR 4K or i walk away due to eye strain in Zavod.
