*** The AMD RDNA 4 Rumour Mill ***

It's an "amazing achievement" considering the nonsense the competition is offering in terms of model-to-model uplift and price/performance. It's also impressive that they were able to a) improve power/performance materially while b) reducing compute units while c) delivering the same general performance as their previous flagship.

I don't see it as that impressive. That is generally what new generations of GPUs should do.

Not really. If they can't release something that is better in price/performance than what is currently for sale, what is the point in releasing it? Especially so if what you are releasing doesnt actually beat the performance of your previous card. When that is the case, the only thing that matters is that it comes in at a lower price point than what is currently being offered.
but it is better than what it replaced by 30-60% which was the 7800xt and 7900gre

They have released something that is better in price/perf.

yes i know. But i wouldn’t call it an "amazing achievement" .

It isn’t the best price/perf increase for a new gen we’ve had, historically.

I find the whole release fairly unremarkable. It only looks kind of ok because Nvidia have done a poor job.

Fudging the numbers there a little bit.

The MSRP of the 7900GRE was $549 and then 9700 is $549, and there is only 15-17.6 % between them. (Granted, better ray tracing though)

The 9070XT is better at 30-35% increase over the GRE, but thats for an extra 50$.

the 7800Xt had a lower MSRP than both the new cards so is less comparable in that respect.

Dont get me wrong, i am not knocking the cards (i wouldnt mind an XT myself at RRP), but i dont see them as anything "amazing". I see them as a pretty normal/unremarkable generational uplift.

I'd love a historically amazing breakthrough every couple of years as well, but the fact is that AMD's mid range cards, as @Game pointed out, has beaten the previous generation's flagship which I think is entirely reasonable.

I know you're having a nice time ******* on everybody's strawberries, but these cards are around at the right time and people are rightly ready for them.

Im not ****** on everybody’s strawberries. I think its a decent card for the money at MSRP, but it isnt amazing.

It is the bare minimum of what i would expect for a new gen release.

We should all be setting higher standards for these manufacturers, for the prices they try and charge these days! :p

How is it an amazing achievement?
I should have clarified my point. The 9070XT only has 64CU's similar to a 7800XT but almost matches a 7900XTX which has 96CU's. The improvement in architecture is pretty good.

as @fs123 says, the 7090xt is basically same die as a 7800xt, pretty much same size, similar cu, same vram etc..it is basically the 7800xt replacement, so for the replacement uplift it's good. the new naming scheme does amd a disservice in my view...if it had launched as the 8800XT(replacing the 7800xt), they would be comparing it to that, not the 7900xt or 7900xtx, wafers that are far bigger than the 7800xt, and that amd said they wouldn't make this gen, as they concentrated mid mkt and below

fact @Jono8 you point out 7900xtx dropped by £300 bodes well for the future then as that's a 30% reduction in price since launch for the 7900xtx..even if we take £650 as the going price for a 9070xt rather than the 569 msrp, if it follows the same 30% reduction in price path over it's life till replacement comes out, that'll put a price of £455 by the end( 70% of 650 being 455)...most of it's life though the 7900xtx was a lot more expensive..it dropped when they started to unload stock, same as when the 4080super dropped to £850 before the 5000 series launched...you take your chances then...guessing a lot of people with hindsight that waited for a 5080 now paying £1350 for them would happily by a 4080super now for £850..same goes for 5070ti buyers my guess

True. However, those prices werent really close to end of life. They were from about May 24 onwards according to HUKD. Thats over 9 months before the 9070s.

We should, but AMD are the only ones who seem to listen! Nobody asked for 4090 +25% for $2000 but here we are...
guessing a lot of people with hindsight that waited for a 5080 now paying £1350 for them would happily by a 4080super now for £850..same goes for 5070ti buyers my guess
Exactly. People don't seem to understand that there was never a choice between the 4080 and 5080 or 4090 and 5090 etc.

Only 36% better than the $499 7800XT according to TPU.

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-7800-xt.c3839

Not amazing really but as we expect (7800XT was 48% faster than a 6700XT and within 2% of a $999 6900XT).

So basically a $100 price hike giving less gen on gen improvement in performance. But it’ll do. ;) (And I want one too for msrp £569.99).

But this is only the case because normally nvidia usually lock in a "only on the latest gen" excuse as they know its a way to force the hands. Ada owners benefit rather kindly this gen but we know its not normally how it goes. If there were more lockouts it would be a different story right now!

tsmc have put their prices a lot in the last couple of years for wafers..you think workers in the aib factories dont get a pay rise each year also? 7nm was $10,000, 5nm $16,000 and 3nm $25,000 per wafer...seeing the gpu die size for the 9070xt is similar but slightly lager than the 7800xt, it's prodcution cost is going to be higher and other cost higher, including shipping which are higher also

if you also look at below, from bank of england, if i put in £650 for the price i paid for my 3080 back in 2020...in todays money, that's the equivalent of 809.41 now... spending £650 now was equivalent of spending £525 back in 2020...so basically between a 3070fe(£479) and 3070tife (£569)

gamers will always want more more more, but I think for a launch price, which is always the most expensive time of the cycle (it's tech, it gets older it drops in price), it's a decent launch...guess it's why i bought one. was in my budget i gave myself before launch and is a big uplift in performance for me

I literally said it is decent. I agree. I will get one when i can snag one for £569 too.

i don't think its "amazing" though. :p

amd has frame gen used it myself it was ok tbh maybe not as extreme as mfg but its still there in the settings
thanks

by the way...switching from nvidia to amd..never done it before..
reading mixed stories about uninstalling nvidia drivers when i switch cards using DDU....some saying it causes more problems...
do i just uninstall drivers using windows uninstaller or def download DDU and do it that way?
