The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Watched the last episodes of a couple of things this evening ...

Kyoukai no Kanata - nice supernatural series from KyoAni. It was a nice series with plenty of action and a nice ending. There are plenty of KyoAni touches throughout.

Galilei Donna - interesting light sci-fi adventure series which was pretty good but didn't quite pull off what it was trying to do for me. Its animation was reasonable and the overall story was ok but there was just something missing (and it could really have done with another episode to finish things off).

... and as something different I also finished the jdrama series Ando Lloyd which was really good fun with killer androids, time travel, lots of action and things like that ...

I'm currently watching:

Gundam Build Fighters
Hunter X Hunter (2011)
Kingdom 2nd Season
Kuroko no Basket 2nd Season
Log Horizon
Samurai Flamenco
Yowamushi Pedal

and waiting for Magi: The Kingdom of Magic to finish airing, so I can marathon it.

So anyone had any good anime related things for Christmas? I have my Birthday soon after Christmas as well so have had a reasonable haul across both ....

BD:
Hanasuka Iroha LE Part 1 and 2 (very, very nice sets from NISA)
AKB0048
Kids on the Slope
Steins;Gate Part 1 and 2
Bakemonogatari Part 1 and 2
From Up on Poppy Hill Collectors Edition
Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere Season 2
Mardock Scramble Second Combustion

DVD:
Chihayafuru Season 1 Part 1 and Part 2 (Region 4 release)
A Certain Scientific Railgun Part 1 LE + Part 2
Waiting in the Summer

Also got the major parts of this years trip to Japan booked up last weekend as well (international flights and hotels done) ... roll on October :)

:)

Watched a couple of the above list so far ...

Waiting in the Summer ... really nice series of its type (romantic/comedy/drama/sci-fi). Despite the lack of official linkages to Please Teacher etc it feels like it should be linked (for reasons which become obvious if you have seen the series) and it has very much the same feel of the older series.

AKB0048 ... great little musical sci-fi series ... although to get the most out of it you really need to know a reasonable amount about the AKB48 group and the appropriate real life members (and those doing voices for the KKS) ... certainly adds another dimension to it.

Finally got time to sit and watch some anime (it seems like weeks since that happened), so ended up watching Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing, which so far (up to the end of set 1), looks really quite good, maybe not quite as good as the original, but pretty close so far.

And it looks lovely in HD :)

Belated Happy Birthday :)

My new house is getting there now, I'm storming through completely unrelated Big Bang Theory and Breaking Bad with the other half right now, she wants to watch Guilty Crown after, and I'm sure I will get some time on my days off once everything is sorted to get the ball rolling again now :)

Proper surround sound (although had to sell my subwoofer for the house) and a nice 1080p Plasma...think it might be overkill for anime but never mind :D

Finished watching the NISA sets of Hanasuka Iroha today ... very, very nice series with great OPs and EDs (from nano.RIPE and Sphere for the most part) combined with excellent visuals (the background detail in particular is excellent on BD). Given that this was PA Works 10th Anniversary release the characters and story are also very good and it's just a good all round series. It's not an action packed series but does have an engaging story which draws you in to world that's created and by the end (and in fact way before then) you really care about what will happen to the characters.

Nice presentation from NISA as well with the series coming in two of their Premium Edition box sets with BD and DVD disks and hardback A4 books covering art and character/location designs.

Other than that for something completely different I watched the NHK 64th Kohaku Uta Gassen (whereas we have ****-poor comedians trying to be funny on New Years Eve the Japanese have a ~4.5hr music competition with many of their big stars/groups forming two teams (red and white) which compete against each other by their members performing their songs).

Watched the latest hajime no ippo all i can say its amazing. Really like the way it was animated. Much more entertaining than a real boxing fight lol :p

Im such a sucker for those anatomical shots and exaggerated jet and braking sound effects :D

So today was mainly ...

Kids on the Slope ... nice drama series with plenty of Jazz music in it. It is very short though and there are times when you think that may be the story could have been a bit better although that would have required a 2 cour series really.

Mardock Scramble - Second Combustion ... this was an ok film but I really need to go back and re-watch the first film as it's been far too long since I have seen it.

From up on Poppy Hill ... Ghibli on BD is always good :)

Speaking of which I see that it was hinted in a radio broadcast on New Years Eve that Hayao Miyazaki may not be retiring (yet again) ... which makes it what? the seventh time he's said he's going to retire and then ended up not doing so ....?

Grave of the Fireflies - you're going to hate for this but i didn't like it, the animation is as ever amazing. But the story was awful, and left me quite angry, the post on IMDB hits the nail on the head

The plot is pointless, as apparently they had money to pay for food the whole time. And they also could have just lived with the aunt, or found someone else for that matter, even if she was a little cruel. You suck it up. The brother (spoiler alert) was irresponsible and didn't have to let his sister die. She could have lived with anyone. Why couldn't he find a job? I don't want to say that that deadbeat deserved to die, but he did. Is that supposed to be the moral? Indolence kills everyone you care about? This was a cheap film, banking on an attempt to decimate people emotionally.

To be honest it left me cold and i could feel any sympathy as he just made one **** poor decision after another.

In the end it's extremely overrated, in fact probably the 2nd worst Studio Ghibli films i've seen so far and i've seen most of them now, Only Pom Poko is worse

Hmmmmm .... I can't say I like it but for the usual reasons. It has been a lot of years since I watched it so I can't really comment on content of the plot. Maybe the author of the story actually had a younger sister hence her treatment here rather than usual nyanyanmoe treatment little sisters seem to get in anime.

Oh no, Pom Poko is infinitely better than My Neighbours the Yamadas ...

My Neighbours the Yamadas has over Pom Poko that it's mercifully short. Where as Pom Poko is extremely repetitive it's very saggy in the middle and if they cut a good 20min about there then it would have been a far better film
