The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Grave of the Fireflies - you're going to hate for this but i didn't like it, the animation is as ever amazing. But the story was awful, and left me quite angry, the post on IMDB hits the nail on the head

To be honest it left me cold and i could feel any sympathy as he just made one **** poor decision after another.

In the end it's extremely overrated, in fact probably the 2nd worst Studio Ghibli films i've seen so far and i've seen most of them now, Only Pom Poko is worse

Yes, the kid messes up. He's just a kid and makes mistakes because he is way out of his depth and doesn't really know any better after previously living a naive and comparatively spoiled life. He withdraws and isolates himself and his sister from society as that is the only way he knows how to cope with the horrors going on. He thinks he can create their own little world, but he can't and that's one of the tragedies of it.

In regards to the reviewer's comment that "this was a cheap film, banking on an attempt to decimate people emotionally" - I'd like to point out that it's actually semi-autobiographical. The book was written by Akiyuki Nosaka, who as a young teenager during WW2 accidentally allowed his little sister to die of malnutrition. The story is based on his experiences and was written as an apology to her and an attempt to come to terms with his guilt.

Wow, its been a while since I looked in here.
Been busy on an anime 'return' thanks to some friends recommendations.

Watched:-
Code Geass
Black Lagoon OVA
Steins;Gate (I can only echo comments here on how good that was)
And Black Butler (If only to work out why my friend has a new cat named Sebastian)

Just trying to find some new stuff to watch. Ive been browsing ANN for related series to those I like and its getting harder and harder to find good new shows. So I have to ask you chaps, have any of you seen/recommend Rideback?

On another note, these decided to turn up

And a pre-order was made for Eva 3.0 Bluray shortly after.
I am weak sometimes.

I have seen black lagoon ova.Thought it was a good adddition to the series, just my opinion of course
Rideback is another I enjoyed too, more so the first half ending was a bit meh
bikes and robots crossed :)

I hate OVA's

Most fof them are silly fillers that don't progess the story or characters in anyway. Then i watched the 3rd Season of The world God Only Knows but had to stop 2 episodes in because a lot of information comes from the 3 OVAs between season 2 and 3. Then i restarted watching season 3 and it made a lot more sense.

Grrrrr!

The only OVAs that are actually any good are the ones from Love Hina, where it actually completes the story with a good resolution

I have two words for those who hate OVA's.

There are good OVAs and bad ones ... the ones you mention, and the Love Hina ones Robgmun does, are examples of good ones. and I would also mention Kowarekake no Orgel (one of the saddest anime's I have ever seen) but there are far to many which are just extra "episodes" which add nothing to the parent property at all.

memyselfandi when are you going to Japan? How much can you bring home? :P

October for the best part of three weeks. I expect I'll be maxing out my, and my Dads ;), luggage allowances for a single bag each coming back (haven't quite got into a situation where I need to buy another suitcase yet!).

Haha, I see, I was thinking of being cheeky and asking you to get me something. :p

So Sakura Trick came out last night, waited up till like 5am to watch it and I wasn't disappointed by the Yuri goodness.

If it was small, light and non-dodgy then I may consider it (dependent on what it was, reserve the right to take a look and say no etc) but as I say I'm not going until October and it's possible to get just about anything normal via places like FromJapan even if they are only available from a vendor who doesn't ship internationally.

I cained Attack on Titan over a few days, I was left disatisfied due to where they left it so burnt through the mangas too, and I usually avoid mangas.

Watched the DVD release of Chihayafuru season 1 this weekend. The series is to Karuta (card game based on 100 poems) what Saki is to Mahjong. It can get a bit involved at times in the technicalities but the characters and story just pulls you in (along with the really nice background music throughout).

Hopefully Siren Visual will pick up the second season too.

I've just finished watching the series and yeah the ending is a little unsatisfactory.

Would you recommend the mangas?

Quick bit of info about Attack on Titan anime, it has one season, which consist of 25 episodes, as well as three bonus episodes and an OVA (original video animation with a running time of 24minutes. a second season of Attack on Titans has been confirmed but no date has been set, though it is expected to air possibly q3/q4 of this year or early next year.

At last, it looks like Place Promised and Voice of a Distant star will be out next month :D
I think I've had them on pre-order for about a year now :) (and Eva 3.33 out in March).

Does anyone have any anime related new years resolutions?
I've sort of decided I'm going to try and read a volume of manga a week - brought about partly because I've got a bunch of manga to read (Love Hina, Genshiken and CCS omnibus's), and want to finally get round to reading the AMG manga (Up to volume 10, 11 and 12 on order).

I'm also going to try and cut down on my Anime DVD buying this year...

I think the only anime resolution I can make at the moment is to try and balance decreasing my overly large backlog, re-watching some old favourites and balance that with the other Japanese TV / Concerts ...

well I bought stein;gate part 1 & 2, golgo 13 tv complete, black lagoon 1 & 2 plus Roberta blood trail ova, eden of the east definitive collection, High School of the Dead: The Complete Series (Drifters of the Dead Edition), black blood brother, summer war/girl who leapt through time , Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Collection One & Two on blu ray last year so I am going to try a buy few more anime blu rays this year. I've got my sight set on the following anime blu ray so far.

Sword Art Online 1,2,3,4
Bakemonogatari: Part 1 & 2
Nisemonogatari: Part 1 & 2
Blue Exorcist: Definitive Edition Part 1 & 2
Gurren Lagann - Ultimate Edition
Cowboy Bebop Collectors Edition Part 1 & 2
Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion - Complete Season 1 & 2

If you haven't got it/seen it yet, the Eden of the east collection (IIRC the entire TV series and films) is pretty cheap on blu-ray now :)

"eden of the east definitive collection" is the one that has tv series, movie 1 & 2 and Air Communication OVA (which is a recap of tv series that you find on disc with movie 1). I bought the blu ray version for £21.41. but it currently on amazon uk for £24

but as werewolf said if you haven't got it yet and have blu ray player I would high recommend getting it or putting it on your to get list if you have one. :)
