Grave of the Fireflies - you're going to hate for this but i didn't like it, the animation is as ever amazing. But the story was awful, and left me quite angry, the post on IMDB hits the nail on the head
To be honest it left me cold and i could feel any sympathy as he just made one **** poor decision after another.
In the end it's extremely overrated, in fact probably the 2nd worst Studio Ghibli films i've seen so far and i've seen most of them now, Only Pom Poko is worse
Yes, the kid messes up. He's just a kid and makes mistakes because he is way out of his depth and doesn't really know any better after previously living a naive and comparatively spoiled life. He withdraws and isolates himself and his sister from society as that is the only way he knows how to cope with the horrors going on. He thinks he can create their own little world, but he can't and that's one of the tragedies of it.
In regards to the reviewer's comment that "this was a cheap film, banking on an attempt to decimate people emotionally" - I'd like to point out that it's actually semi-autobiographical. The book was written by Akiyuki Nosaka, who as a young teenager during WW2 accidentally allowed his little sister to die of malnutrition. The story is based on his experiences and was written as an apology to her and an attempt to come to terms with his guilt.
