The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

just got the anime limited mystery boxes

the blue one (I assume as it had a B on it) has;
Promare Steelbook
Big Order
Kakeguri
Boogiepop Phantom
Code Geese the ressurection

What I assume is the green box has
On Gaku/Our Sound
Josee, the and the fish
Anti magic academy the 35th test platoon
El-Hazard the mysterious world
My Hime

Not bad, 5 of them I haven't got already and 4 of them i'd been eyeing up.

Not much of interest for me in the sales so far, and the Evangelion CE was too expensive for me at £90.

The mystery boxes are great if you don't mind what you get and just add to the pile of stuff, I have limited shelf space so I try and only buy the sets for shows I like.

Will see what the early bird price is for the Bookworm CE when it hits the store.

Glad i didn't go for the mystry boxes as I have 4 from the first and 3 from the second. Of the things I don't have two I don't care about and one I have been eye'ing up but at low priority.

Have pre-ordered Bookworm today and the film the other day ... as well as way to much Gundam off the BOGOF

Started watching Chainsaw Man, but got impatient and started reading the manga. I saw a Youtube comment somewhere to the effect of "oh wow wait till you see where it goes", though I'm on volume 7 of 12, and it's not been particularly revolutionary yet. Somewhat repetitive actually, but there are seeds of interesting plot points scattered here and there.

I’m only watching it so ep8 now…..if the manga matches up with the episodes then wowza…

Seen on the 15th Dec Netflix are releasing a newer version of Violet Evergarden with a reorder. As much as I enjoyed it the first time round and visually it's stunning it's not a series I'd go back and watch again.

I watched it again recently, episode 10 was a difficult watch even though I knew what was coming.

Violet Evergarden: Recollections appears to be a condensed recap of the main show, it's 1h 35m long so can't be a full re-ordering of the original episodes, as there was like 13 of them at about 20 minutes each.

I'd say the best watch order if you have time is still the original one, with the movies bolted onto the end in release date if you still want more. They're kind of optional though if you ask me, the main series stands up well.

Ep9 is equally as good, lots of new reveal. I like the mystery layers to this show, and then there is Denji’s human side where he just wants to live a normal life and get a girlfriend which is also endearing and weirdly interesting.

Started Cyberpunk Edgerunners the other day, and unintentionally ended up binging the remaining (6) episodes I had all yesterday. What an amazing series. It was neat seeing all the references to the game, and an unexpectedly emotional show.

-edit- OK, this series has seriously unexpectedly hit me like a ton of bricks! I was quite sad and melancholic after initially finishing it, but I actually wasn't too emotional, but now I keep listening to that song over and over, and I re-watched episode 2 afterwards...oh my God! :(

I finally finished Hunter x Hunter, I think I actually started this last year at some point but I took a break somewhere in the middle bit before the ant arc.

My thoughts are that the anime ended really well, I won't spoil it just in case anyone else here hasn't seen it, but I think it ended at a satisfying place. I also wish there was more but it will, in my view, never end. The manga is about 50 chapters ahead and by all accounts the manga as a whole is about half done maybe, with the author creating it on and off for a very long time.

The anime got better and better as it went along I think, sometimes things got a little long-winded or dragged out, but it had some really compelling high points as well.

What I like the most about it, is that the author is probably the only person capable of continuing the story. For a lot of shows you could drag any old writers in and get them to create more episodes or add additional detail, but the Hunter x Hunter world is so vast and the characters/motives/plots so many, that I think that no one could step into these shoes and continue the show if the author was struck by lightning tomorrow.

So why does demon slayer always take so long to release the next season?! Love it but hate how long it takes to release a season

With most anime it seems to be a year between seasons is pretty normal, that's if it gets renewed at all.

Seems like Demon Slayer at least has some good support for more releases, and Ufotable do some amazing work on it, it can't be easy or quick to make. I'm happy if they keep on making more of it.

I don't know if you know this but most anime is still being made whilst they air it, they may have a few episodes lined up ready to go with episode 1 airing, but if something goes wrong on production then the entire show can be held up or suffer quality issues.

86 had this last year, where the final 2 episodes had to be pushed back a few months, and Isekai Ojisan also had this, where they got half way through the season and then had to delay the rest until this season.

The production stuff is interesting, I watched an anime about making anime called Shirobako that follows a "The Office" style docudrama of an anime production studio making anime. Animeception if you will.

I think one of the only studios that really champions the artists and staff properly is KyoAni, who not only hired fulltime staff instead of outsourcing like most studios do, but they also usually had the episodes all prepared before airing not during, which must have been way less stressful.

It's still my number one anime of all time. Most characters had good character building. No one really gets stupid convenient powerups (bleach, DBZ). Fights come down to abilities more than power levels. Having said that, the power properties is something else, to name a few, nen, zen, hatsu, maybe missed a few.

The character transformation though was sick. He became more of a monster, where the meruem became more of a human.

I did read the manga a few years ago, they are journeying to the dark continent and there's nen beasts and there is a new big bad, can't spell his name lol but the world building is something else. I just hope Togashi can get someone to draw instead of himself due to his health problems.

Yeah it seemed like it was a good stopping point because there is a lot more world to explore out there, so I was pretty happy with how it ended as things stand.

My fav shonen is Demon Slayer I think, but Hunter x Hunter is clearly a top tier one to me as well. Fav anime is Monogatari/Madoka Magica.

What anime are people looking forward to next season?

https://myanimelist.net/anime/49387/Vinland_Saga_Season_2 - Vinland Saga Season 2
https://myanimelist.net/anime/50197/Ijiranaide_Nagatoro-san_2nd_Attack - Nagatoro Season 2

These on my maybe/try it out list:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/51252/Spy_Kyoushitsu - I didn't get on with Eminence in Shadow this season, but hopefully this isn't the same kind of thing, art looks interesting.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/52173/Koori_Zokusei_Danshi_to_Cool_na_Douryou_Joshi - Adult cast/workplace setting so could be more interesting than yet another school!
https://myanimelist.net/anime/51265/Inu_ni_Nattara_Suki_na_Hito_ni_Hirowareta - I admit, I am curious as to how this plays out.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/51462/Isekai_Nonbiri_Nouka - Nice tomatoes :)
https://myanimelist.net/anime/50652...you_no_Endou-kun_to_Kaisetsu_no_Kobayashi-san - Tsundere, not totally convinced I'll stick this one out.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/50854/Benriya_Saitou-san_Isekai_ni_Iku - The theme sounds fun, so I'll give it a shot.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/52736/Tensei_Oujo_to_Tensai_Reijou_no_Mahou_Kakumei - It's a yuri so i'm in.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/53213/Revenger - Gen Urobuchi so I'm going to try it out.

I have had no interest in anime in the past, but came across Chainsaw Man and started watching it (3 eps) on Crunch Roll and quite enjoyed it. Is it worth the subscription? Is there enough other good content to make it worth it?

Anime as a medium has such a variety of things that it's hard to lump it all into one basket and say you like or hate it.

I think to like anime at all you have to at least like animation as a concept, with the pros and cons of that vs live action stuff, but beyond that there are anime that cover all sorts of genres and styles.

If you put your mind to it I'm sure the CR back catalogue will have a good range of stuff to try out. I'd encourage you to try out stuff in sub version instead of dub as well if you don't mind reading the subs, the Japanese voice actors take their job very seriously, so having tried both in the past, I'd say they generally do a much better job. The dubs always sound a bit too American to me but if they exist and you prefer the dub, that's fine too.

If you want some good beginner anime to get into it a bit more and see what you think, I think any of these 10-15 or so shows (in no particular order) will be a good place to start:
  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • Demon Slayer
  • Attack on Titan
  • Fate/Zero
  • Death Note
  • Violet Evergarden
  • Cyberpunk Edgerunners
  • 86
  • Promised Neverland (Season 1 only don't bother with more)
  • Erased
  • Overlord
  • Lycoris Recoil
  • Your Lie in April
As a general note there are some anime tropes to be wary of, and one of them is that they put fanservice into almost everything. Some anime have none at all, but I think it's a fairly common feature, so your enjoyment of the media as a whole may hinge a little on that. The list above is fairly clear of it though as I can re-call, except for Cyberpunk, but it's just the Trigger style. You get a taste of this in Chainsaw Man really so if that doesn't put you off it's kind of common.

I'd have many more recommendations beyond this list should you be interested later :)

One of the pros of anime is that the medium lets them run with insane story ideas and settings that just wouldn't really work in live action. For example Paripi Koumei is an anime about famous 3 Kingdoms era general Kongming re-incarnating into modern day Japan and becoming an idol manager who uses his strategy genius to promote her talent. Birdie Wing is an anime about crazy golf mixed with underground yakuza betting circles, that kind of thing.
