The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

6 years after release??

I’m glad you like it, i love it, it has so much on many levels.

That's what made me watch it. I remember you said it was good so finally got around to it. I should have listen to your recommendation sooner. :o

@Raymond Lin see the ending

I take it despite they couldn't remember each other, they were compelled to find one another by their feelings and connection? Happy ever after ending?? Or is there a follow up?

!!!!!!! ( Don't watch if you haven't seen the episode yet )

You should probably put that into a spoiler tag!

I saw it earlier but the title kind of is a spoiler of it's own :)

It's probably the most well known anime film of the last few years I think, surprised you haven't seen it before today!

Have you seen his other films? I liked Weathering With You and Garden of Words.

Yup,
Basically, there is no follow up but the characters makes an appearance in Weathering With You, you can see them making an cameo.

If i were to watch Shinkai stuff i would watch them in order of release, mostly because you can see his artistic skill improving with each one, the way he develops the characters and story almost builds up from the previous one. One can critique that he only knows how to make 1 kind of film, the yearning romance of young love, but he is so good at it and I don’t mind it. Your Name is his magnum opus IMO (I’ve not seen the latest one yet), and I watch it at least once a year. Even if i just watch a clip of it, the clip where Mitsuha running to her dad and tripped over, with the music in the background makes me emotional still.

Start with Voice of a Distance Star, but if you can’t get that, start with 5 centimetres per second.

One of the fun thing with Shinkai movies is that he uses real world Japanese locations, so its fun to go visit them for real if you ever go to Japan.

I don't tend to watch a lot of anime movies tbh, some can be hit or miss, and like with live-action TV shows/movies I generally watch more TV shows than movies, easier to just skip between episodes.

I also don't care that much for Ghibli movies, which is what a lot of people default to when talking about anime movies.

Saying that, these are some movies that I think are sort of notable and worth checking out:

Makoto Shinkai - Your Name, Weathering With You, Garden of Words. Presumably Suzume would make this list as well but I've not seen it yet, waiting for a retail release.

Satoshi Kon - Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers. These films are all a little older, but Satoshi Kon sadly died before he could make any more movies. These are the 4 releases he put out before his death.

Silent Voice - Animated by KyoAni, this is movie that is very high quality.

Redline - This is hand-animated no CGI at all, it's sort of like Podracing from Star Wars. Not my absolute fav but I'm not that into racing/cars, but still have to admire how they hand-animated the entire thing and how good it looks.

These movies need you to have seen the related TV series, but I am mentioning them because I think the movies were great, but also because the tv shows they relate to are worth watching.

Disappearence of Haruhi Suzumiya - This is the finale movie for Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, the tv show has it's ups and downs, but it's very watchable. This movie is one of the best anime movies I've ever seen, I'd put it in my top 3.

Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll - This is a spin-off movie that is basically an extended VE episode. Should be watched after the main show. I actually preferred this over the actual VE finale movie, which I consider optional.

Liz and the Blue Bird - Spinoff movie for Hibike Euphonium tv series. If you asked me if I'd like to watch a tv show about a school band/orchestra I'd have said it wouldn't have been at the top of my list, but the tv show was actually really good. There are like 2-3 seasons of this show though that you'd need to watch before this.

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl - Finale movie for Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Both have kind of silly titles, but the tv show is fairly short, and the movie was good. There is more coming as well I think.

Naturally you have the Demon Slayer movie as well but it was also released as a shorter Season 2, so I wouldn't necessarily mention it here in detail. I know it's popular but I think Madoka movie 3 (Rebellion) is also pretty optional, and I don't think the tv show needed a finale movie.

I watched Suzume in the Cinema subbed ver and it was pretty good.

Have seen a few from the list. Will check some of them out. Cheers. Redline that was a blast from the past!!

I'm sure some others will have more options as well, I guess there are some of the movies from Hosoda such as Wolf Children and Girl who Leapt through Time, but I'm not hugely into his movies, they seem to push his parenthood narrative into the movies he makes, often to the detriment of the actual movie in my view.

Maquia as well, the film was decent but think it would have worked better as a tv series, more room to spread out.

I guess should also mention you have the older ones like Akira/Ghost in the Shell which are classics of a kind.

lol well it is unlimited budget works aka ufotable! Give them a blank check and they will animate the **** off anything.

Mihoyo has partnered with Ufotable to make a Genshin impact anime and considering Mihoyo has more money than they know what to do with im quite keen to see what Ufotable can produce with basically a blank check. Mihyoyo has so many top tier anime VA already on their payroll and the story/lore in the game mixed with ufotable it could be something special or a huge missed opportunity.

Some fanmade stuff using mainly ingame assets and some custom stuff but keeping inline with the story/lore

One of my childhood love that isn’t Ghibli (Laputa is my fav), is Project A-ko. I really don’t know why? It’s about 3 girls who kicks ass of aliens lol, it sounds so crap on paper and probably crap by today’s standards.
You're probably aware but Discotek released a remaster of it based off the original film masters, apparently the head guy at Animego found them whilst looking for something else in a Japanese archive :) (they'd been misfiled and he recognised a probable mispelling on a form), I'm hoping ATA will release it here as they've been releasing a number of the other discotek titles.

Don't know how I missed Baki Hanma: Son of Ogre when it first came out 2 years ago, but I started it last night, and it's a blast!

I just wish there was more than one season.

yeah they are very good combat anime entertainment. There are 4 seasons iirc.

Not for this one, it's a single 12 episode cour.

This might be separate for one season but the 3 seasons are linked with all the same characters and imo just as good if not better. They are all produced by Netflix. I would highly recommend checking them out if you havent watched them already.
