The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

I don't know if anyone is interested, but it looks like both the Patlabor and CCS releases from Madman are on hold for now for some reason (possibly problems getting hold of materials?), but they say they are hoping to get it sorted soon.

I did read something that the CCS delay was until September due to them wanting to source more materials (inc. the BD masters) to work from.

@Alex, I liked Idolm@ster, it's not to strenuous to watch and has a good cast of characters. I do find that I prefer the last third, or so, of the series over the rest of it. I've not played any of the games either.

BD source materials?

/looks very interested...

I can always live in hope:p
I've actually been reading the CCS omnibus editions over the last week or so (having had them since release), as I've needed something light and amusing that I can pick up and put down:)

I wouldn't get your hopes that high ... I think that they just want the best possible masters for their DVD release. I doubt that they are likely to take the risk of running a series of that length on BD at the moment.

I really like the CCS omnibus editions ... although I did end up rushing through volume 3 as my Japanese teacher wanted to borrow it. I believe volume 4 is due out in September (along with Yotsuba&! volume 11).

Nice ... Usagi Drop is getting the NISA treatment (inc. BD) in August ...

I was going to get the Australian release, but since the NISA release is going to add around £5 to the price I'd have paid on UP for the Aussie release with the addition of a BD version I'll be putting my money into the US release (although UP has made some changes to their shipping charges, probably due to the increases in royal mails prices).

I would ask if you have seen the episode 0 of E7 Ao ... but having seen it I don't think that it actually answers, well, anything ... :)

I didn't know that even existed, after watching it, it just seems to be a recap of the original series.

But yeah, it doesn't seem to answer much does it :(.

Still, we can see where it goes.

With E7 Ao it would just be nice at the moment to know who were the "goodies" in it ... i.e. those who the main character is going to join up with ...

anyway ... other than catching up on various things didn't really watch that much this weekend (busy with other things) ... I did manage to watch through ...

Heaven's Lost Property Forte ... on Funimations DVD (boo ... where's the BDs!) release. This series follows on from the first season of the title and is very much along the same lines. The main character is still just as perverted and the way things go each episode is in a similar vein to the first season. Whilst I would say that you shouldn't expect that much from the series it does have it's nice points at times and there is some growth of some of the characters. Overall ... it's a good light-hearted watch.

(and it is also another series which has a trailer for the second series of Strike Witches "out now" :()

Ok tenchie muyo
what do I start with?

It's .... complicated .... as I understand it ...

(1) 3 OVAs comprising 20(?) episodes ...
-The first OVA is episodes 1-6.
-Episode 7 is a special.
-Episodes 8-13 are OVA 2. (Including the bonus episode 13.5)
-Episodes 14-19 are OVA 3.
-Episode 20 is a special.

The OVAs are also known as Tenchi-Muyo Ryo-Ohki

(2) Continuity wise Tenchi-Muyo GXP follows (1) about a year after the third OVA

(3) Tenchi Universe ... TV remake of the first 6 episode OVA + Mihoshi special (with quite a few changes)

(4) Tenchi in Tokyo ... reboot of the franchise

(5) The movies fit in:
Daughter of Darkness - after OVA 1
... in Love - After Universe
... Forever - After ... in Love

(1), (3) and (4) are separate timelines. There are also various spin-offs as well (Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, Sasami: Magical Girls Club).

Personally ... I'd say go with the original OVAs (Ryo-Ohki) followed by GXP. I seem to remember enjoying GXP the most of all the Tenchi properties, (athough I can't remember Universe at all, although I know I've watched it, and I'm pretty sure that Tenchi in Tokyo is still in my backlog). I'm pretty sure I've watched it in the wrong order several times (I'm 99% sure I saw the movies before anything else for a start).

edit: having gone to have a look at my shelves actually I think my preference was Ryo-Ohki instead of GXP ... and I seem to have two copies of the OVAs, one a brick of the OVAs plus the Mihoshi special and the other a nice tin which is titled as "Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki" ...

argh don't mention Tenchi

I keep wanting to rewatch it, and that's bad - I have all the DVD's for the TV series etc and most of the spinoffs, but no time to watch my current stuff:p

Tenchi is a bit of a classic, I like the OVA's the most, GXP is fun if slightly sillier than the main stories, Sasamis it the weakest of the lot.
A lot of people seem to hate Tokyo, I think because they changed the basic story the most for it, as well as the art (they also introduced a new main non tenchi character).

memyselfandi, are you sure your ryohoki special tin isn't just the third set of OVA's?
IIRC they came in a tin as a SE both in the US and UK :) (and by the looks of it, TRSI have vol 3 of ova 3 with the tin for just $5 - tempting to order a couple for the rest of the OVA's etc).

Now you've made me go and get them to look at ... I have ...

(a) Tenchi Muyo! The Complete OVA series (13 episodes) plus Mihoshi Special across 3+1 DVDs put out by Geneon/MVM (run time of 420mins)

(b) Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki (tin) across 3 DVDs put out by Funimation/Revelation (run time of 325mins)

Looking at the actual disks I think you are right and the tin maps to OVA 3 (and makes up the run time with a 40min live action special and a 30min radio drama). Whilst the "complete collection" in the first sets case is actually just the first two OVAs :)

Tenchi is one of those series that I keep on meaning to go back to but never actually get around to doing so (it took me ages to get around to watching it the first time!)

If only for the sheer number of cuts they apparently made for broadcast ... (see here but there will likely be many spoilers)

IIRC it's been on Sci-fi (largely uncut from memory) back in the earl 00's or possibly late 90's, and then on CNX/Cartoon Network which had the cuts but not all the "digital bikinis" (at least for the later showings).

I can't even try to remember how many times I've seen the first couple of OVA's now, as it's been so long:p

From what I've heard (it may be true, but it might not be true) Kadokawa is restricting overseas BD releases.

Also (since someone asked about this a while back) the K-on movie is being released (in Japan) around July 18.

Yeah, I'd heard the same myself for Kadokawa being ***** regarding overseas BD releases, (along the lines of they weren't going to let any release in that format for their titles this year) ...

I'm tempted to get the K-ON! movie as I would imagine it'll be a while before we see a US release (which would be a long time before any UK release)

Part of it is probably because I'm a jazz fan, but I'm loving Sakamichi no Apollon right now! Very likeable characters, some beautiful animation, nice humour and great music.

I've found it a pretty interesting series so far ... I wasn't sure whether I was going to like it or not but it's growing on me ...

Two others I'm liking so far (early days) ...

Hyouka ... ok, one of the characters is a bit moe-bloby but the first couple of episodes have had that laid back, slightly odd ball, high school club vibe that I like ...

AKB0048 ... here we've only had a single episode so far but I found it, for the most part, very good with generally good animation and catchy songs. The general idea for the series seems to be set (but after only one episode do we know for sure) and there's already one unanswered question ... The only downside was the way they animated some of the dancing in the "concert" for me.

You can defniitely see the influence that K-On has had on Hyouka, especially with the animation and art, which looks very nice and i can't really fault it to be honest.

Nothing much has really happened but I'm liking it so far. Seeing as the voice actors for the two male characters are Tomoya and Sunohara from Clannad/After Story I'm expecting some good serious/comedy stuff from them.

I just finished watching the first episode of AKB0048 5 minutes ago.

First impressions are that it's ok, it seems like a cheesier version of macross frontier tbh. The production values were quite good, Satelight certainly knows how to do big visual spectacles.

There was a clear use of 3D animation for the dance routines which did feel a little off. It's probably for budget reasons tbh, animating all of those dance routines by hand would cost a fortune.

I'm expecting lots's of dance numbers and songs but nothing ground breaking in terms of story and characters tbh. To paint the show in a cynical light, it's mostly there to boost the sales and popularity of the real AKB48.

It'll probably end up being very similar to Idolmaster. Something to switch your brain off and enjoy i think.
