The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Some of my favourites (over the last 5 or so years) would have to include

Black Lagoon (now available again, AND on Blu-ray*)
A__a 0 quite slow, not an action packed anime by anyones reckoning, but something completely different and really enjoyable/relaxing to watch.
Spice and Wolf
Ghost in the Shell (TV series, and first movie)
Haruhi
Wolf's Rain
Clannad
Redline

A full list would be a lot longer, and have to include the likes of Bubblegum Crisis, original Macross, Emma, most of the Ghilbi's:p


BTW is Basilisk any good?
Anime on line have it cheap this week.



*I WILL be buying S1 and 2 on Blu, as soon as my "new disc" list is shorter:p (I've got about £150-200 worth of DVD's and Blu's due this month thanks to new anime releases and the Bond set).
 
I'd recommend that you watch Code Geass, Durarara, D.Gray-Man, Blood+, Darker Than Black, .Hack//Sign and .Hack//Roots, Eden Of The East(Higashi No Eden), Gundam00 and Madoka Magica.

I'd agree with Code Geass as one of the best examples in the last decade. It certainly kept me gripped throughout.

Also a thumbs up for Clannad/After Story, Toradora, FMA (I'd go with Brotherhood if i had to choose) and A_ia. I've also enjoyed most of the other shows listed, they're all enjoyable.

I'd also add Gurren Lagann, Eureka Seven and Azumanga as solid additions.

Still, A_ia remains my all time favorite show. Such a relaxing show, and it proves that an enjoyable show can be achieved without going overboard. But, echoing what mymyselfandi said taste is a marmite thing. People will judge what's the best based on different criteria. What i might consider the best shows aren't necessarily the most financially successful nor the most popular.

I've watched most of those listed above by memyse and alex.

If you can't refer to Haruhi Suzumiya as over-hyped then I dno what world you're living in XD I will admit it's a very good anime though.

It's obviously going to be different person v person but I wouldn't call anything but the main 3/4 anime that've been running for the past several years as being over-hyped. Any good anime will at some point reach an 'over-rated' status just because it has so many fans which is pretty sad.

Remember that Anime in Japan is weekly and that shows like Code Geass where you have a cliffhanger every other episode have a much better impact when you've got to wait a week.

I don't actually own any anime physically except the two Eden of East movies on BR. I get all my anime through fansubbers cos I don't watch dubbed.

At the time it was horrendously over hyped, but now some time has passed and people have moved on i think it a great little show to watch. (if you skip the endless-eight episodes) the first season, most of the second and in particular the movie are all cracking stuff.

I personally love harem shows, easy to watch, lots of humor and easy on the eye. But i know for a fact it's not a popular type of show

There's quite a few shows which Harem is the subgenre and are still really good. Code Geass, Star Driver, Infinite Strator (All mech aswell XD)

Btw Endless Eight was the ballsiest move ever. I also liked the Haruhi movie.
 
It was indeed a ballsy move, but it failed. 1000's of internet pages have been devoted to people discussing it but my mind is that that it could have been compressed to 3 episodes and still have the same effect

A japanese friend of mine said at the time that they fast tracked the movie as a way of an apology for the uproar it caused.

I would even attempt to argue that it wasn't :) ... but that doesn't stop it from being very good and having an excellent film. I even enjoyed the Endless Eight loop as there was enough of a variation between episodes. All looks very nice on BD.

:rolleyes: ... not quite sure why only watching things subbed means that means that you don't need to buy them if they are licensed and released with subtitles ...

Oh and I suggest you edit out the link and "group" name from post 1204 given that it contravenes the thread rules on the mentioning of such things (talking about the series is ok, talking about where to get and who's "doing" it isn't).

:rolleyes: ahh ... so you just buy everything straight from Japan ... or do you just assume it's your right to download what you please and not bother supporting the industry which produces what you like to watch ...

Personally I have no issue with people watching things from other sources as long as they also make an attempt to support the industry, either when things are licensed for subbed/dubbed release or through the importing of merchandise/media ...
 
Have to say, I download everything from sub groups, but I spend enough money buying Anime style T-Shirts and Figures and tons of other stuff per month to support the industry, in the last two months, I think I have spent £700+ or so.

September.. is a killer for AmiAmi orders, think I have 5 orders worth over £250/300 worth and so on.

I don't see the point of disks, it's an outdated technology which takes up space and that the subs and dubs in Westen releases suck so much. Last decent release I saw was Hellsing Ultimate by Manga Entertainment, the dub for that was great.

Call me old fashioned but I love having the discs of everything :p knowing I can watch anything at any point by just popping it in the DVD player is reassuring (and I love collecting the boxes :D). Not a fan of digital/streaming services - but this is largely due to my appalling 2Mb internet speed.

Haven't really had many experiences with bad subs on DVDs, worst dub I own is probably Elfen Lied (I can't stand some of the voices in English).

I do like owning games on disk, my last two games I brought was BF3 and Crap of Duty Fail Ops, but since both can be downloaded and installed from online... the disks and cases are now pointless, but they look cool. lol

I wouldn't mind buying Anime on disk if it's cheap enough and only for my favourite series's, but even then it be a waste of money and space.

I like everything on my harddrives so whenever I want and wherever I want, I can just play anything with a few clicks.

If there was a Steam version for Anime releases, I could be a sucker for that. lol

Hoping my next AmiAmi order arrives today, am expecting 5 T-Shirts, 3 Madoka T-Shirts, 1 Hatsune Miku and an Hyouka T-Shirt.
 
Can't say that I've had any real problems with subtitles on US/UK releases for the most part ... a little over localisation at times but you get poor subtitles at times from other sources too. Dubs on the other hand .. well I just ignore them.

I dislike streaming personally (although I do have a Crunchyroll account) and prefer to have physical copies for my media ... although I do have an extensive Plex infrastructure for watching rips or other copies (I would love to have the time, and disk space, to rip everything to it but that's not the case). I much prefer my really nice Japanese BD release of Clannad over a bunch of MKVs (I hate to think how much I spent on Clannad in total what with the Japanese DVD LEs for both series, Sentais subbed release of both series and both series on Japanese BD).

My next AmiAmi order doesn't come out, if I remember correctly, until December. I don't get T-shirts in general 'cos I'm a fat ******** so getting ones that fit is problematic ... I did pick up a couple of charity ones for last years tsunami though. I do have at least one CDJapan order between now and then, another CDJapan order in the post at the moment and a large pile of Yen ready for next month for a bit of shopping ... ;)

... plus of course various US releases on order between now and Christmas, (not as much as usual though as I have to leave some things for people to get me as pressies ;))

Can we be a little careful about fansubs, as technically they are pirate (unauthorised copies of coprrighted materials).

What I will say is, that given the choice between a translation where the translators (have usually) got access to original scripts (often for the entire series) AND can, if need be contact the original writers for clarification, or someone who is doing the translation by ear alone based on what has been aired so far, I'll tend to go with the pro's ;)
IIRC Jonathon Clements articles on translating are quite interesting when it comes to the differences between translations (pointing out that even a technically "perfect" translation can be wrong if the person doesn't know the full context and have a good working knowledge of both languages including the background being certain phrases).

Over localisation can be an issue, but personally if the choice is between say two jokes,one a literal translation of the Japanese, that doesn't work without explanation in English, or an English equivilant, the one that works naturally preferred option, as long as it doesn't change the feel of the episode (IE in Azumanga Diagh when they play the word games etc, it makes sense to translate that in a form that works in English where possible, rather than stick to the Japanese and lose how the game works).

I'm very much a physical man for my content - as can be seen by the lack of remaining storage around my computer and DVD players:p

You also have the element that if the anime has been based on other media, either light novel or manga, then people who are translating the episode in an amateur fashion may well make assumptions about what has been said and the context based on their previous contact with the title and these things may have been changed in the anime release for what ever reason.

It's also not just a case of the raw translation but also the editing to take the translation and adjust it to something that can be displayed and read on screen within the time limits of the line without losing the meaning.

The Azumanga Daioh manga was pretty poor for localisation with the orginal ADV release being very Americanised (to it's detriment). The later Yen Press release reads a lot better as the characters actually appear to be at school in Japan rather than the US.

Received volume 1 of the new "second season" Genshiken manga release earlier.
 
Ugh people who don't understand you can be fluent and a fansubber.

You lot have obviously not watched any fansubs recently from various groups.

Just forget I was in here. lol
