I watched the live action version of Kiki earlier. Overall I enjoyed it but you are right that it does vary quite a bit from the anime ... more it is the same feel, or spirit, of the anime rather than just trying to remake it.

I thought that Jiji was done quite well ... the hippos ... less so.

On the anime front ... re-watched A__a season 1 last weekend :D
 
I watched the new Blu-ray of Spirited away last night, which was good :)
A nice upgrade to the DVD version, even if the packaging is not a patch on the R4 limited edition from a few years back :)
I'm not sure but I think there was still a slight reddish tint (same as the DVD versions), mainly noticeable on things that were likely meant to be plain white (the paper bird things for example), but as I've never seen the original Cinema version from Japan it's not something I really noticed or can get worked up about.

I may try and watch something completely different in the next little while, possibly attack on titan, puni poni dash, or something else from my collection/backlog.
Having said that I should be getting the complete BSG on blu-ray this week, so that's going to eat up a lot of time.

So quite the collection of Studio Ghibli, I already own a few so Im quite confident that they should be good. Apparently Porco Rosso is the best studio ghibli of all time. My favourite was Howls moving Castle so i hope im pleasantly surprised and it gets knocked off my number 1 Ghibli list :)
To prove im a manly man I bought some violent anime:p I had Ninja Scroll on dvd quite a few years ago and really liked it. Shigurui, never heard of it but the reviews are quite positive so I went for it.
Gurrent Lagann I watched about 3 episodes last night on Netflix and I know ill enjoy it. So ive stopped and gonna watch the ultimate edition that comes with the movies and loads of OVA's plus its blueray and in 1080p:D

Has anyone here seen Shiguruis death frenzy?
Have I picked any rubbish, I know its personal but I think we can all agree on that Aliens Versus Predator 2 was terrible:p Is it possible one of those ghibli films is poo:eek:

... in my defense I've done that on purpose as a lot of my authors are not putting out books for this Christmas so I need to leave some things to include on my Christmas list (and there is quite a bit of anime on there).

I did drop ~£1500 on JPOP concert boxsets and CDs whilst I was out there, (boxsets being second hand so the actual list price was significantly more than that).


(* compared with some years in the past which would make Werewolf's list above look small ... put it this way there were some periods where I got US disks shipped to my parents, because it was easier delivery wise before I used UP, and I'd pick them up a couple of times a year and some times we are talking maybe 3 or 4 plastic crates of anime each time!).

edit: thinking about it I have bought more than that as I bought several things from my local HMV when they had a relocation sale with some big discounts. From the top of my head I remember picking up the following Studio Ghibli BDs

I would note you should probably watch Whisper of the Heart before The Cat Returns as they share some characters.

Just watched the wind flows, very good really enjoyed it and confirmed it that ill be getting all the ghibli films there great.
 
well so far I got no Ghibli films in my collection but I'm temped to buy the "The Hayao Miyazaki Complete Collection [Blu-ray]" but that £180 off amazon uk and £174.99 of zavvi. so if I do buy that it won't be until middle of next year.
 
pecnarf, iirc you may be able to get the individual films in the collection cheaper than the box set, but you'd lose the nice box and a disc of extra's.

I actually cancelled my order when I realised I had most of the films twice, and it was only (I think) two of them that I had not got on blu-ray.

Same here, I've already got singles of the films on DVD and BD so justifying dropping the best part of £200 on yet another version would be difficult.

Even just looking at the "what other people buy" section on the Amazon page shows a couple of the 11 films included at just over £11 each on BD so shopping around, and in some cases probably waiting for sales, could lead to quite a saving over the boxset price.
 
well I did quick add to basket on amazon to see what it would come to if I order the individual films instead of the complete collection. if I did non steelbox or limited edition blu-rays it came to £144 where the complete collection is £180. so that. 11 blu-rays.
 
oh well just impulse buy on "Patema Inverted - Ultimate Edition [Dual Format] [Blu-ray]"

update: saw that "The Hayao Miyazaki Complete Collection [Blu-ray]" had came down in price to £134.52 on amazon and that it work out cheaper than buying the individual films separately so once again impulse buy. :)

I paid the £180 -.- Wonder if they will refund the difference or if I'll need to return it and re order.

depends if you had it on pre-order from amazon then you should get it at £134 price, but if you got it from somewhere else, then no you can't get it at that price. currently on amazon its gone to £154.07 which is still cheaper than the standard price of £180.
