The cinema...WTF !!!

its not just a 1minute piracy experience a lot of films have 5minutes of trailers sometimes more and you cant even skip them sometimes... only fast forward
put them in the bloody extras section on the disc....
cinemas even have 10+ minutes of adverts....
piract warnings make no sense because pirates dont see them anyway

I've never, ever watched the trailers on a DVD, so they must be skippable on PS2 too :p

Which means you're only seeing them if you have a stand-alone DVD player that can't/ won't skip them. I can see how that would suck. For everyone else you just jump straight to the root menu :p

I agree that cinemas have become expensive these days especially if you see a film in 3D. The food is horrendously priced so I do tend to sneak in a bag of Maltesers and bottle of drink to compensate.

The one thing that annoys me more than anything at my local Vue cinema (Gunwharf) is that out of the 18(?) screens that there are, only 3 of them are really any good. Bigger screens, best sound, etc.

However, I've been to a fair few opening night showings, paying the £8/9 for a normal adult ticket and I get put into one of the small pap screens. Annoys the hell out of me. Inception being the one that recently sticks in my mind.

The other thing with my cinema is that if you book online, you have to pay for the damn pleasure of it!! I believe it's £1.20 per ticket. THANKS. So booking early, saving them hassle with queues at the entrance and ensuring them a spot is taken and I have to pay for the pleasure of that? I thought doing things online was meant to save money...

Finally, the icing on the cake is paying all the premium to get the above and THEN the film is rubbish...

Rant over, these are the reasons why I probably only go to the cinema once a month on average now. For eagerly anticipated blockbusters or films that come highly recommended.

Only if it means you can cut down on staff. For a cinema, you always need people on front desk and at the popcorn counters. Buying online is just a convenience, I doubt it saves them any money at all, and they have the added cost of maintaining the website.

If you book online at Empire, you pay a booking fee but you get a premium seat, which is sort of a trade off...

Last film I saw in a cinema was Godzilla and cost about £1.

How many of you remember going to the pictures and there were always 2 films on and you could stay all day?
Obviously Big Kev, Steve 2000 and Spie will remember.
Footman and Singist will remember silent movies with a piano player in the corner.

I remember paying £1.50 for an all day Star Trek marathon (6 films iirc) and as much popcorn and drinks as you could scoff down. Went to see Red recently with the girlfriend and had no change for £35 paid. I'm on the prowl for a 60' TV, surround sound and popcorn maker. I'm thinking my days of going to the cinema might be over.

WTF has happened to the cinemas, I remember the days when a student ticket cost £3.50. I went to Cineworld last night to watch Saw 3D and my ticket, 3D glasses, popcorn and coke came to £19

I know the cinemas never been cheap but it's like walking into the Apple store, you know you're gonna get fisted but it still never quite prepares you for the shock :(

This has now got me realising why piracy is so rife if they charge such horrendous prices for a film that wasn't even that good.

/rant

But you did get to share my popcorn and have me for the evening! you should be greatful!!!!!

I think some people are plucking prices out of the air here.

Leicester Square aside, even watching a 3D film in London (which are obviously the priciest) is about £12.25. Booking online (card handling fee), choosing premium seats or viewing it in a premium screen will elevate the price further.

Point I'm trying to make is that unless you go overboard, it's quite easy to see a film such as Saw 3D (which I used as an example) for about £12, which I think is pretty reasonable. If you went on something like Orange Wednesday's, it's half that.

Anything else you spend money on is your own choice...
If you don't live in walking distance of a cinema and they charge to park, then yes, that a bummer. However stuff like Popcorn and drinks, you will get ripped off for. It's much better just to take snacks with you if you need. My local Odeon has a Morissons just next door which sells the same sweet Popcorn the cinema does for 59p!

The 3D glasses made you look like Buddy Holly lol

BLATANT RIP OFF IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A FAMILY TO SEE A MOVIE

and thats before any drinks , popcorn , busfare / parking ticket & petrol etc

it quickly becomes 60 or more quid for a 90 minute film

throw in the price of burgerking ,mcdonalds , pizza hut etc and thats easily another 20 quid

now your talking 80 quid or more for a few hours

Reasonable? Factor in a bird and even only one child and that's way over £30 before travel, food before, during or afterwards and drinks.

You're talking well over a ton for cinema and a meal. Extortion.

its crazy you could spend the day at a theme park or zoo and only spend about as much money but you get the whole day...

i dont see how people think its reasonable to spend so much for a cinema trip.

There may be some people on very high incomes, who may feel that £50-£100 for a trip to the cinema (including food) is reasonable. Others on more modest incomes will obviously feel that the same £50-£100 price-tag is extortion.

My own take is that spending £50-£100 or thereabouts to visit the cinema (+ food) is plain ridiculous.

Cinemas are expensive now, but I guess its a "take it or leave it" service. You don't have go to the cinema if you don't wish to. You can wait 3-6 months for the DVD release and then watch the same movie, at a lower cost.

The bottom line of this should surely be if you don't like it don't go, I find the whining about it frankly a bit unnecessary as it's a choice, millions of people go each year without raising an eyebrow at the price so it's surely the opinion of a select few.

Sounds good to me. Can't think of a better way to spend a hundred quid than cinema and a meal.

To be fair, it is extremely difficult to run a cinema because, unless you're a big chain, you make sod all cash. Cinemas are expensive to run with little profit incoming. Even in Central London the independents struggle. I would imagine that with the increase in film downloading, prices are rising to retain revenue.

It's the people who take film casually, rather than seriously, who complain [the eaters]. The rest of us don't mind spending money on something worthwhile.

Well that's fine, as you have the choice. I'd prefer to save the cash and buy a top 3D telly within 6 months for less than would have been spent going to the cinema.

I agree there are massive bonuses to watching films at home [no annoying patrons, cheaper] but I love going out to the cinema. Filmgoing must be a mixture of both. Sitting at home every time to watch a film takes the excitement and atmosphere out of the occasion. The films I REALLY wanted to watch, I had to see at the cinema.

If you went out with just the bird, and bought a total of four drinks (two each) you would have already paid as much, if not more than the price of two cinema tickets. Any transport costs or going for a meal would then be little different to such an evening that doesn't involve sitting in front of the cinema screen.

Yes it may be expensive if you have a big family. But then there are ways around it... kids under a certain age free... going during kids showings in the morning when its cheaper etc.

On a moral note, I personally wouldn't want kids until I could afford them. So it's no good people harping on about not being able to take their 5 kids to the cinema if they are on benefits.

so we cant afford kids because we cant justify £60+ at the cinema and then suddenly we must be on benefits....
maybe when you move out of your parents house into the real world and stand on your own two feet you views will change..

did you know my family when to disneyworld florida 1 year ago for two weeks ?
going back for 3 weeks in 1 years time.

dont worry though i must be on benefits if i cant afford a cinema trip
