* The Comic Book and Graphic Novel thread *

Speaking of Absolute editions:

They are Kingdom Come, Identity Crisis, Green Lantern: Rebirth. All-Star Superman, Justice, Watchmen, Batman: The Long Halloween, Final Crisis. Justice League: The New Frontier and Blackest Night.

The Long Halloween and Justice books are both signed by Tim Sale and Doug Braithwaite respectively.

These lot are not Absolute editions but just giving you an indication of my small collection.

I'm re-reading Sandman while the Overture books are being published. I want to read them all in one go and need a distraction with the first three issues just sitting there.
Also on the pile are Transmetropolitan, Saga, Marvel 1602 and Hush Unwrapped.

Anyone else use stash my comics to keep track of their books?

I've been using www.comicbookroundup.com, I go on it once a week or so and see for any decent reviews and then add them to my pull list.
It also tells me when a TPB are being released

I need to start reading Saga but I've got such a huge cataloge to get through it's going to take some time.
Did anybody buy this? I've got mine and it's an absolute beast of a book!

I have just been using a Google Drive spreadsheet to track my reading. Nice and simple.

Read the first issue of The Boys (Garth Ennis) last night and found it very enjoyable so looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

Very nice collection!

What has everybody got to on their lists to read at the moment?

I have quite a lot at the moment. My list with my comic book shop (Travelling Man in Newcastle) is as follows:

Action Comics
Batman
Batman and Robin
Batman Beyond Universe 2.0
Batman Eternal (weekly series)
Batman/Superman
The New 52 Futures End (weekly series)
Harley Quinn
Multiversity
Sensation Comics Wonder Woman
Smallville
Superboy (due to be cancelled soon I believe)
Superman
Superman/Wonder Woman
Supergirl
The Flash
The Phantom Stranger
Worlds' Finest: Huntress and Power Girl (due to be cancelled soon)

Those are just a few of what I get on a monthly basis. There are a few smaller arcs I have gotten and then bought again in trade form. Digital comics include Arrow Season 2.5 (started this week) and The Flash Year Zero (starts next week). I used to read Smallville digitally. But then stopped and decided I will get the print versions instead.

A number of graphic novels I am looking forward to. Mainly Superman Earth One volume 3 and Batman Earth One volume 2. But I wish they would hurry up with both Wonder Woman Earth One!!

Stuff that I'm reading in progress:

Buffy & Angel (First season after TV was so bad I almost gave up but then it's got really good)
Saga
Morning Glories
American Vampire
Chew
Saga
The Unwritten
Thief Of Thieves

Working my way through Fables at the moment though.

Yeah I use a spreadsheet to track mine as well! Also got a list of stuff that I want to read (filled with Image stuff mostly!)

Is this worth buying? I've seen it on sale and it looked quite interesting

It's very good.

Regarding image, I highly recommend ' Prophet' superb sci-fi in a Mobius style.

I loved ' the boys'.

I would also recommend 'Starman' superbly written and real heart .

Other non superhero stuff:

Transmetropoltan.
The Invisables

I'm currently reading Death of Captain America and Spiderman back in black arcs after finishing with Civil War.

Civil War is really impressive when you read beyond the main comic which is the typical Marvel flash, bang and wallop. All the issues surrounding security, liberty, freedom, friendship and revenge are really looked into and a lot deeper and more insightful than I was expecting.

I'm looking to give this comic lark a look.

I like a lot of super hero films, like the batman games, started watching Gotham the other day, guess the books it all comes from might be worth a shout....

I'm definitely hoping for something a bit adult themed. Not necessarily violent or racey (although isn't that the point of comics?!), just so long as it's not nonsense or childish.

I'm guessing Batman is the way to go, I also like the Iron Man films too but not sure how childish/cheesey the comics might be??

So, I've asked a pal who's a comic book fan and he's suggested I start with 'Batman, Court of Owls'.
I'll give it a go, but anyone have any other suggestions while I'm at it??

Ta :)

P.S. I don't think Superman would be my bag. Bit too well behaved, plus he's bloody invincible, where's the fun in an invincible dude kicking arse?! Of course he can, he's invincible!!!

Haha. Sounds like you've never picked up a single comic book. :D

They're not for kids these days. And there's lots to choose from. As for cheesy, depends who the writer is. There's some very serious Iron Man novels out there, "Demon in a Bottle" for example. Deals with Tony's alcohol addiction.

DC -
Batman: Court of Owls
Batman: Hush
Batman: The Killing Joke
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Swamp Thing New 52
Animal Man New 52
Wonder Woman New 52
Superman New 52 Issue 32 and onwards
Green Lantern Saga, Geoff Johns run
Aquaman, Geoff Johns run

Marvel -
Ms. Marvel (New one is awesome!)
Planet Hulk Saga
Hawkeye (Pizza dog! "Hey bro") :D

Image -
Black Science
Rat Queens

Other -
Manhattan Projects (fantastic read, just got done with Vol.3)
Afterlife with Archie
The Sixth Gun

There's more just can't remember everything. :o

And as for the superman comment, he's been toned down a lot since silver age superman (who could lift planets!). Clark and Supes are very interesting characters.

If you're enjoying Gotham you could take a look at Gordon of Gotham which collects stories with Jim Gordon as the focus and Batman on the periphery or Gotham Central which considers what NYPD Blue would be like if the detectives risked running into super villains as part of their day job.

The other Batman stories suggested are all acknowledged classics, and well worth a read.

Away from superhero books Locke and Key is a brilliant gothic book written by Joe Hill (Steven Kings son) about an old house with supernatural doors and keys.
Chew is about a detective with a weird psychic power where he can empathise with the food he eats. It's way better than I just made it sound.
And if you haven't read it, Sandman by neil Gaiman is still the benchmark for thought provoking adult comics.

I've decided to have a wander into the comic World.

First purchase was Suicide Squad Vol. 1: Kicked in the Teeth (Kindle edition) for 0.49p off Amazon!
Can't argue for that price (still that price now if anyone else is interested).

Downloaded to my tablet and reading on that (you would have to be stupid to read it on an actual Kindle!).

This is an excellent read!

Also away from the superhero genre:

  • Bedlam
  • Scott Pilgrim
  • Five Ghosts
  • Y The Last Man
  • Revival
  • Fatale

That'll keep you busy
