The Day of the Jackal

One issue I have with the plot, is why killing that bloke would stop River being released.

Wouldnt he have a contingency? He seems to have a loyal inner circle who could release it even if he was assassinated.

I'm enjoying it but yes, there are holes here there and everywhere. I'm also somewhat stupefied why they've announced a renewal which sort of removes the spectacle of seeing the jackal fly in to a wall from machine gun fire. Hohum.

And whoever that poster was suggesting the Willis atrocity being the original needs to be submitted for re-education!

Been enjoying this so far, one thing that bugs me though is, i really dont see some high end hit man allowing himself to get distracted by letting family into his life.
This is the one thing I don't really like about it. The whole point of the book was that The Jackal was a complete enigma, who's identity and history was never discovered. So to load him with a backstory feels a bit off.

However, aside from that, I'm really enjoying it. I think Redmayne is a great actor and casting...he bears a good resemblance to Edward Fox, pulls off that same outwardly quiet, reserved English gent but with a ruthless edge. There's lots of homages to the original film in the way he dresses, and the shot-for-shot remake of the original films rifle practice scene in episode 5 was almost perfect...even down to the camera angles and focus zooms.

I had issues with episode 7 though

They make everyone go through a body scanner and security is really tight, but some random man with a gun manages to get up on the side of the stage?
YES! I was watching the episode as I typed my last post and said the exact same thing to my girlfriend as it ended...

...she reckons it will perhaps turn out to be part of the existing security detail who'd been inside with their weapon all along. I guess we might find out in episode 8.

Really struggling to stay with this. Ep 6 was awful. Redmayne is increasingly obviously miscast. The 'nam flashbacks are so clumsy and ham-fisted. It's just not very good.

Not awful. Not that good either.

I think that's supposed to be Afghanistan.

Hasn't that been about 10 seconds of screen time?

Yes I know it's Afghanistan :P It's just so horrendously cheesy. The character of Redmayne is all over the place. He's this loving family guy but is just executing bystanders. Silly war flashbacks.

Interesting show. I very much enjoyed the start of it, but have been a little less happy as it has progressed.

The lead actors are kind of doing an reversal as the show progresses. The intelligence officer gets less human while the Jackal gets more. I now want the Jackal to succeed and the intelligence officer to die a horrible death.

I wonder if they will stick to the original story or end it some other way?

All that security and scanners yet someone can sneak a hand gun in, what a let down after all that build up to the end of the episode.
iirc he was part of UDCs actual security team that went rogue, So was easily able to get the gun in...also the "Advanced" scanner wasn't brought in until prior to UDCs Arrival, As it wasn't there during Jackals first visits.

His Spanish wife is easy on the eyes though. She needs more screen time.
She's beautiful isn't she :D
Decent episode this week showing the backstory of what happened before he became the jackal.
See i think a lot of the episodes can be really predicable, Even a few episodes before when they couldn't determine what exactly happened to him and his team out there back when his team was serving i knew he had to have killed them, Especially when he needed to disappear...im interested though in what happened (or will happen) to his army buddy/spotter he saved in the next episode..is he still alive now.

Oddly enough I felt exactly the same way!

Disliked how they have deviated from the film with his character.
