The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

I am not exactly thrilled to hear that the old Gamebryo engine is still around in however minute an amount (despite all the talk about a new engine) and that things are still looking consoley.

So, I imagine it's going to run like crap, patronise me, have all the detail cut out, and not look that good especially a year on when I finally upgrade so I can play it at more than 15fps because they still won't use occlusion culling.

Sounds like the mistakes of Oblivion all over again. It'll still sell in huge amounts though.

Whatever Bethesda get wrong the modders can try and sort out. End of the day both Morrowind and Oblivion have had god awful parts to them that mods can sort out nicely and keep changing up the game.

People said exactly the same thing before Oblivion.

Modders can only sort out so much. They can't change problems with the engine itself, for example. Plus, the first impressions of the game will come before the modders get a chance to put anything right. I pre-ordered Oblivion. There's not a lot of mods going about on release day. For those of us that have the game straight away, the basic, probably somewhat broken game of day 1 has to be shelved for a year while we wait for patches and the modders to catch up.

Well it depends if you're talking about bugs or just crappy design decisions. Helps to at least play the game a bit first to decide whats good, what sucks and what sucks some serious ass. No doubt UI mods will be out as soon as possible.

There is no reason why you have to buy a game on day 1 either. I always wait a while, especially with stuff like Elder Scrolls as there will be bugs. Plus I know there will be mods. And other people can spend thirty or forty quid on testing the game for me, while I wait a few months and pick it up for a tenner. :D

"the UI is really user freindly but it's not intended to be mouse-used"

Is this quote real? god how lazy are the devs, like someone said i'm sure there will be a mod within a few days of launch.

That is a little odd. Are they expecting PC users to use their keyboards to interact with the menu? There is little invention that has been around for a while - mouse wheel. Pretty much purpose built for menus, yet apparantly mice weren't considered?

Misquote I think. Surely it isn't that console focused!

I hate it when games don't even bother to support the mouse wheel on menu's that quite clearly need scrolling. Its just as annoying when they don't include something so simple as a drop down box and insist on making you scroll through each individual option till you eventually find the 1 you want.

No it means it will be designed around a joy stick.

It will work with a mouse but it will be awkward clunky and irritating.

So most likly one of those ****y wheel style ones.

Also it means the font will be ****ing huge because it's deigned to be read fro ma tv across the room (much like oblivions) and so take endless clicking to view until somone makes a high res version.

Hopefully we get more details on this soon - in particular, videos/screenshots ingame.

Videos would be better. All you can figure out from screenshots is how consolised the UI is. Though tbh you can't really just the game from videos either... it'll show the little things but its the big things that'll keep the game going.

Doesn't mean the game won't be good. Perhaps they have a better system in place that we are not aware of. We know very little at this stage.

It means it's designed for consoles (and apparently so badly designed they didn't make 2 menu systems for different inputs) which means it will as dumbed down if nor more than oblivion, so nothing like morrowind.

Where have you read this? Will be annoying if it is indeed the case... Fed up of people dumbing down RPG's they are meant to have depth! E.G Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2, the second one was still a good game, but more Third Person Shooter than I would have liked...

Sigh,

Rather than refine the pre-existing menu system from Oblivion or Fallout 3, Bethesda decided to toss them on the scrap heap and develop a new, streamlined interface. Searching for inspiration, the team kept coming back to Apple, and for good reason. Over the last decade the company has revolutionized how consumers interact with software and hardware moreso than any other tech outfit.

”You know in iTunes when you look at all your music you get to flip through it and look at the covers and it becomes tangible?” game director Todd Howard asks. “One of our goals was 'What if Apple made a fantasy game? How would this look?' It's very good at getting through lots of data quickly, which is always a struggle with our stuff.”

"We are working at pop-up issues, and we want to make sure that the graphics of the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 are alike. All three will look just as good, aside from the higher resolution and the anti-aliasing of the PC of course."
