The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

Does anyone know how to set a shortcut for a bow, without it clearing the shortcut after it's used?

My shortcuts are
1. sword
2. shield
3. bow
4. healing

When my bow is equipped, if I press 1 or 2, the shortcut for 3 disappears

Edit: It fixed itself after I sold the bow and favourited a better bow.

Actually I have decided on Breton, as it gives you a bonus to all magic except destruction, which will level quickly anyway. Also the class perk is pretty good, absorbing 50% magicka for 60sec

I found that Destruction levels painfully slowly even with the mage stone. :( Destruction is the one biggest disappointment in the vanilla game IMHO. I must try the balanced magic mod.

Yeah not sure where you're getting Destruction levels quickly from. Alteration and Conjuration will level quickly if you use them for battle. Illusion levels quickly if you use Muffle randomly. Restoration goes slow as hell even if you use healing spells regularly. Destruction was painfully slow. I only got it boosted by about 5 levels from ~45-50 because of a glitch after I visited the basement area in the College which gave me something like 50 mana regen per second for 8 hours so I could spam full cost Fireballs at everything in sight.

Maybe it just seemed that way, as I used it as almost exclusively my only magic last time. Looking at the skill trees, Illusion and Conjuration look quite fun.

Is it cheating using a mod which allows you to wear more than one ring?:p ...I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. I do already have one which lets you wear hoods and Circlets though.

Couldn't you wear two in morrowind?

Anyone totally finished the Thieves Guild quests? I'm doing the Vex/Devlin bits and I've done 3 of the special tasks from Devlin but I can't seem to get the 4th one to activate. I did bugger up one of Vex's missions in Markarth as I killed everyone so that might be why but now I can't seem to get a mission in Markarth for love nor money from either of them.

I don't understand why they made Dual Casting cost 2.8x mana for 2.2x damage. Without Impact to stagger enemies it is completely useless and even then you only use dual cast on the Apprentice level spells because anything more is just too costly for combat.

It's an overburn, it's not meant to be efficient. It can make or break the difference in a fight with an opponent that periodically heals itself if you can burn it down inbetween periods. Also dual-casting isn't only for damage increases, as you've noted with the combined stagger perk, or spells affecting higher level / tougher creatures who'd shrug them off, and increased durations on spells that have a duration.

Can't really knock it!

Though I did wonder if the damage spells were out of wack in the game as only Firebolt seems to interrupt a dragon (Ice Spike, Lightning Bolt, at the same level as Firebolt, and Fireballs being the next step up from 'bolt, do not), though others affect other NPCs, and I did feel the damage dealt by them was a bit on the weak side - except when the NPCs used their own versions of them against me in return.

So.. I don't think the issue is dual-casting really, just the damage spells not being too well thought out. I haven't gotten 100 Destruction yet though and don't know what goodies that brings. I'm well-pleased with the 100 Alteration and 100 Illusion spell boosts.

Still unsure what to concentrate on. I am level 5 and have 2 perks in to Conjuration, as I find it quite fun and 1 in destruction. I am currently deciding between Illusion and Restoration for my third magic spec(not bothered about maxing the skill trees tbh, some perks are not really needed).

Other than that, I am going for One-handed(I am using Bound sword a lot) sneak, Speech and another undecided.

So that will make it:

Destruction
Conjuration- Bound sword, summons
Restoration/block- you need some protection!
One-handed- needed tbh, plus backstab is great
Sneak
Speech- I want to get trading going as I have never really bothered with it before
Another- between Alchemy and Archery

One question for those who have tried them- Block or Restoration/wards

Without the Impact perk dual casting is completely useless. An extra 40% cost for a pitiful 10% more damage? That is never going to be better than firing 2 single hand spells and the tiny bit of extra damage won't make the difference between death or heal often enough to be better than conserving mana. Its not like the health bar is very accurate.

Not played this game for awhile now having focused on BF3. Just realized that the creation kit has been released!

So thought i'd have a play with it and managed to create an everlasting Azura star just by changing both the value's to grand soulgem.

Ward spells are nowhere near as good as shield for blocking physical attacks. I'm hoping for a proper Bound Shield spell mod or something :).

I am wondering if it is possible to go all through the game using Bound sword and bound bow, it does not tell you the damage you do with them in-game anywhere.

With the Mystic Binding perk they are around Ebony/Deadric levels of damage, but you can't improve them. I really like the Bound Bow, very powerful, and you get 100 Bound Arrows which are very powerful as well.

@Evilsod fine, like I said, there's other reasons for dual-cast to exist even if you never, ever, use it for destruction spells. Also invest in some destruction efficiency bonuses and you can cast destruction spells for free anyway, therefore it's a cast of 2.0x damage for casting a pair of single shot spells, or 2.2x damage for a dual cast, both for 0 magika, so what would you use then? I think your view of the perk is a bit narrow.

You can find that out on the wiki and the answer is pretty much 'yes'.

The basic versions of Sword/Axe are pretty crap. Equivalent to an Orcish Sword or Iron/Steel Battleaxe. The Mystic version is equivalent to a Daedric Sword and a Glass Battleaxe (so the Battleaxe is a bit meh). Obviously you've got to take into account that you can't improve it with Smithing, nor can you Enchant it.

The Bow on the other hand is seriously powerful. Even the basic version is almost equivalent to Daedric. The Mystic version is equal to a Exquisite Daedric Bow and in both cases, it gets a quiver of arrows that do the same damage as Daedric Arrows. I've no idea how the draw time works with it. It goes on the weapons weight according to the formula (for the purposes of Glass vs Daedric), so if the bow weighs nothing it might draw slightly faster than normal too.

I'm being told my view of the perk is a bit narrow by someone talking about its effectiveness when you abuse enchantments to make spells cost nothing? Jeez, its pretty bloody obvious that if the skill costs zero then the highest damage wins but given that thats a stupid situation not unlike superuberimba Legendary Enchanted weapons/armour where you've effectively broken the game I don't see why it matters.

We were talking about Destruction spells, thats it. Longer duration on Conjures/Alteration? Higher level effectiveness on Illusion spells? Has nothing to do with the insignificant amount of extra damage you get from dual casting for the extra cost. The only reason anyone would use dual casting for anything other than Impact stagger is because they don't realise just how bad it is. The game doesn't bother telling you that it costs 2.8x for 2.2x damage. You don't dual cast high level spells because its too expensive. You do it to Apprentice level spells because its as cheap as you can get while still inflicting stagger.
