The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

I am amazed anyone cares, the MQ's are usually the weak links anyway. The best stuff in Morrowind was the "house of" quests (with awesome rewards), with Oblivion it was the Dark Brotherhood.

On top of that the side quests and general mooching about, I doubt I will even touch the MQ for the first 50 hours, I tend to just pick a direction and go.

I just hope it isn't like Oblivions, with those ******* gates meaning you had to finish it to get any decent exploration done.

Eh? The gates never replaced anything, just dotted the landscape. And even then, they only appear after you rescue Martin (I think) and only in a small number. They get more frequent after Cameron escapes I believe.

They certainly don't stop you doing any 'decent exploration'. Hell technically the Oblivion Gates are sidequests themselves...

Think i did about 150 hours before really starting on the main quest in oblivion. The guild missions and various other side missions took most of my time along with a bit of exploration. By the end i had about 200 hours put in on oblivion. I will probably get the same in Skyrim

I always completely do the main quest first and then do all the side quests afterwards. But that depends on if there are any natural breaks in the storyline, if there are then i will probably do some side quests then as well.

I've never got past that main quest where you sneak into the Mythic Dawn cave. Just couldn't be bothered with it. By contrast, I've done all of the guilds (Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild twice), Shivering Isle's twice, butt loads of exploration and modded the hell out of it twice (Elsweyr is made of win).

God knows how long I've played it for, in total, somewhere in the region of 400 or 500 hours, but screw the main quest.

Given it's designed for consoles it shouldn't bring any PC to it's knees

Like Rage was and yet i get an fps drop to the likes of which i haven't seen since running my 1st pc :D (slideshow anyone?)

Now whether it's a terrible bug ridden mess on release is another issue. :)

Again, see Rage :)

But back to the topic at hand, I have cancelled my pre-order for skyrim because of ^ that game just so that i don't buy another mess. Been stung once too often in this regard this year.

Ill wait-and-see what it's like on release before commiting to buy it.

Bethesda had nothing to do with the making of that failed game

Yes true but I found they would just keep popping up when I least wanted it and ruin the skybox / get in the way.

Maybe I should have pushed on and finished it.

Cant decide on whether to go for box or steam downlod in case box doesnt arrive in time.

So i'm going cover my bases and try a shop Ive found that emails you the key then sends the box through the post.

Tempted to cancel my order as I don't envisage much time for playing this.

I've got it on order for £23,so would not wish to cancel if in 6 months say it was around the same price still!

What do you think?

No, but they were a well respected developer and no-one expected them to drop a bugged mess like Rage on people. Just like Bethesda really.

Anyone who pre-orders anything these days is just asking for a slap in the face.

I'm really not sure what you're getting at... they didn't develop Rage and you've apparently forgotten about Fallout 3 which doesn't exactly have a reputation for being stable and bug free. Infact, since when has Bethesda had anything but a reputation for dropping bug riddled games into the public domain and letting modders fix it for them?

Bethesda games have so many bugs, why?
Because the games are massive and last longer than 5 hours.
It isn't easy to bug test something that players can generally play in whatever order they feel like, its not do this then this followed up by some more of that.

The Elder Scrolls/ Fallout games can be very buggy of course, but i tend to be quite forgiving of them considering how big they are and they mostly don't get in the way, though Fallout 3 could be especially bad sometimes.

For those asking how long the game is ;)

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-13-bethesda-qa-beats-skyrim-in-2hrs-16-mins

A Bethesda QA tester has set the early pace for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim speed runs, completing the forthcoming RPG epic in an impressive two hours and 16 minutes.

As detailed over on the Bethesda Blog, a representative from Bethesda QA - Sam Bernstein - took on a rep from the development team - Jeff Browne - in a speed run contest to celebrate the game heading off to retail.

Bernstein finished the game's main quest in a time of 2:16:10 - just 20 seconds faster than Browne. No cheats were permitted, and apparently both contestants took a different route through the game.

Bernstein's prize? A modest trophy, pictured below, and a pie of their choice baked by director Todd Howard.

The blog post was at pains to point out that it might take the average player rather longer to polish the game off - "our developers have years of experience under their belts and know all the ins and outs for speeding through the game."

The pre-release speed run face-off seems to be becoming a Bethesda tradition. In an identical contest held before Fallout 3 went out into the wild, Bernstein again pipped Browne to the prize, wrapping up the game in just 75 minutes./quote]

Lol! That's quick, but then you'd be a moron to rush through the main story like that. I personally hated Oblivion because after the initial escape from the prison, it gave you no cues as to what exactly you're supposed to be doing... there was no story there at all.

For some reason though I find myself wanting Skyrim...
