The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - MODS & TWEAKS

Nice one Mr.Krugga. I already had about 80 mods installed from the steam workshop. This nexus mod manager is useful too, since the workshop is not comprehensive.

Should I unsubscribe from the steam workshop and use the nexus mod manager, is that what other people do?

Also how do you properly uninstall mods?

I'm not subscribe to any mods, in fact I try to stick to loose files only, when possible.

Uninstalling most mods is straight forward, but you have to be aware that mods modify your save games and therefore may introduce unwanted bugs when uninstalled. Some have special instructions which is why Pighardia insists on reading readmes (it's advisable).

See instructions for mods like WATER or Realistic Lighting for details.

Clean Skyrim install

Clean Install

For anyone looking to clean up their Skyrim install, you don't need to reinstall the whole game, in fact you won't have to redownload most files.

To completely get rid of mods altering the game, you'd need to dig into 3 folders, the main Skyrim folder, Skyrim/Data and Documents/My Games/Skyrim.

1) The vanilla folders in skyrim are Data, DirectX10, DotNetFX, lex, Logs, Papyrus Compiler, reslists, Skyrim and VCRedist.

Files are: Archive.exe, atimgpud.dll, binkw32.dll, CreationKit.exe, flowchartx32.dll, high.ini, low.ini, medium.ini, readme.txt, RendererInfo.txt, Skyrim_default.ini, SkyrimEditor.ini, SkyrimEditorPrefs.ini, SkyrimLauncher.exe, ssce5432.dll, steam_api.dll, TESV.exe, and VeryHigh.ini.

You can safely remove all other folders and files created by third party applications, FXAA injectors/ENB configs, etc.

2) The only essential folders in Skyrim/Data are Interface, Strings and Video.
The rest are added with mods and scripts so you can safely delete them.

Since some mods can modify files in Interface and Strings folders, I recommend to remove them all and recover afterwards, the files are small in size anyway.

Essential files: Skyrim - Animations.bsa, Skyrim - Interface.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes.bsa, Skyrim - Misc.bsa, Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Skyrim - Sounds.bsa, Skyrim - Textures.bsa, Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - VoicesExtra.bsa, Skyrim.esm, Update.bsa, and Update.esm.

You can safely remove all other files and folders.

3) Documents/My Games/Skyrim includes your save games (make a backup!) and two config files, SkyrimPrefs.ini and Skyrim.ini.

Remove these files and let the game rebuild them on launch.

After you've gone through these steps, launch Steam, right click on Skyrim, go to Properties, Local Files and Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Once the game has finished downloading any remaining or broken files, you're done, your game is as good as after a fresh install!

Clean Save

How to Do a Clean Save

Some mods require a clean save when you uninstall them or when you upgrade to a newer version.

Follow these steps:
1.) It is generally best to go to an interior cell, and smaller cells are best. An interior cell is apparent because you have a loading screen when you "open" the door from the outside (such as when you enter most buildings).
2.) Save your game to a new save slot (do not overwrite an earlier save) and quit the game.
3.) Uninstall the mod.
4.) Start the game and load your last saved game.
5.) After the game full loads, make a SECOND new save (do not overwrite an earlier save) and quit the game.
6.) If you're upgrading the mod that you uninstalled, you can now install the new version.
7.) Start the game and load your previous saved game.
8.) Just to be safe: make one more new save (do not overwrite an earlier save).
9.) That's it!

I have Skyrim for xbox 360. Now I know the Pc version will look better etc but do you guys reckon it is worth buying the Pc version also?

Might be a silly question, but I take it I would get much more enjoyment and eye candy from the PC version?

No doubt. The field of view alone is a good enough reason. But with mods, nicer graphics and the loading times. Its a much better and more polished game. I'll be picking it up as soon as I've bought my new system. And I'm responsible for the official thread in consoles. So that should show I don't mind that particular version, its just obvious the PC version is better. :P

Yes yes yes!

Even if it is just for the mods.

My mercenaries seem to be bugged out. I haven't seen what a missing mesh looks like in Skyrim tbh, so that might be the problem, it onlt affects mercenaries so it should be easy enough to sort out. It is weird though, this happens whenever they are on screen, even from miles away-

I honestly don't know how I managed for so long without the categorised favourites menu mod.

The difference in functionality between the crappy default menu and this one... its a completely different league.

I've had to restart recently due to too many mod changes, which finally screwed up my saves... I tried the above 'clean save' steps above but the issues persisted [long pauses and missing water textures] so I stripped the game of everything and restarted with my preferred mods in place from the start.

Trouble is I get the itch and want to try something new, but I'm trying to be more selective and make sure I don't make any progress until I'm sure I want to keep it.

'Glorious Grass' is a keeper for sure.

Same here, for some reason I didn't use it at all until about a week ago, and can't believe I played without it! ...similarly, I also downloaded the font replacer, and even a tiny change like that can add something new to a game.

Have you overclocked your card by any chance?

No I sorted it now. I was going to start a new character as I started getting some ctds, so I did a fresh install(which didn't take long at all thanks to Steam backup;))

I wish there was a way to 'lock' your game, as I have it just the way I like it now...but no doubt I will find some mod which I like the look of and will not be able to resist installing it, which will start stretching the stability:p

What is the best UI mods and gameplay mods for a mage?

Starting a new mage build and don't know what mods to install for it.

Beyond the obvious SkyUI, Categorised Favourites Menu is a must. The default one is just so horrible when you have a long list of skills and you can quite easily set up your own 'skillsets' like the ones I have that allow you to quickequip anything you have favourited. Handy for keeping things like buffs (Ebonyflesh+Candlelight in my screenshot) off the hotkey bar but a quick keypress away.

Balanced Magic is a great magic mod. Spell damage isn't pitiful and the earlier skills still pack quite a punch even later on. At lvl41 now and just short of Master which will up my damage slightly more and my Incinerate is hitting for over 130, dual cast it does around 300 so you can actually play mage without feeling like your spells are doing pitiful damage and basically being there as a support character for your follower/summon by spamming cheap Impact staggers.
