The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - MODS & TWEAKS

Modding can be a minefield to the inexperienced but here a few pointers:-

Use Nexus mod manager this adds the mod for you and when you remove it will replace any files the mod altered -http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/modmanager/

To arrange your mods I suggest using BOSS - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6 as nmm will not place the mods in the correct order

When adding texture packs add the large ones first ie skyrim hd or sro etc then add the other files over this - mod installing order is important .

Your game is seriously out of date check the integrity of your game files this should update the game to the current level. Check your steam settings as the game should update automatically.

There are lots of youtube vids to help you get started.

Hope this helps.

I'm new to modding,as well.
I'm using nexus mod manager at the moment.
I read about S.T.E.P on nexus,is that much better way of managing mods and the game itself?Seems to me it takes a lot of time to set this up.What are the benefits?(in long run)
Will I be all right if I just use nexus mod manager?or shall I download BOSS,to accomppany NMM??ta

I can't decide which overhaul mod to use. I'm not happy with the vanilla perks and variety of weapons/armour/magic, so I'm struggling to pick from the likes of ACE and Skyre. Requiem looks ok, but I can't be bothered fiddling with all the console options for it.

SkyRE is fairly casual in the mechanics it buffed from vanilla, but the combat itself is the hardest of the lot, as enemies are extremely intelligent now with the latest update. Not only do they block pretty much everything you throw at them, but groups will flank you, and even the biggest, burliest warrior has flanking bonuses from the sneak tree, it's immense as a challenge whilst being accessible on the mechanics side to a casual player.

I've never heard of Requiem, but ACE was the first ever overhaul and has had a lot of work done on it, so it's the safest bet if you're gonna slap an overhaul onto a pre-modded game. Non of the overhauls will work with existing saves, though.

I personally say SkyRE, 100%. It adds everything you could want, it adds hundreds of weapons and has complete compatibility with immersive armor. Also, get Weapon Variation Expansion, that's another incredibly good mod, it basically takes all the vanilla weapons and randomizes their looks, so you could end up with an iron War Axe that actually has a blade on each side, instead of it being just a Hatchet, and you can find the Zweihander looking Steel Greatsword but in Longsword version, which looks awesome.

W.V.E Mod

This 'WAR' Mace look familiar? ;)

Could you write links to mods you mentioned in your post, please?thanks
I'm starting to mod skyrim with step guide, but there isn't any mods in the list about combat.

I'm hoping some of you fellow Dovakiin's can help me here...

Firstly, for AMD GPU users, what Catalyst drivers are you using? I'm stuck on 12.8 because any other package gives awful texture glitches (disappearing mountains, trees, weird sky etc). The 12.8 is the only driver that seems to be alright for me, is this the case for others?

This is my second time with Skyrim and i decided to install some mods (13 to be precise). The game runs decent enough but Steam is being a bloody nuisance to be honest. I bought both Dawnguard and Hearthfire yet only the locked achievements for Dawnguard appear in the achievements list. The Hearthfire ones used to but, for some reason, have disappeared. They only appear if i fulfill one in game, at which point the achievement is awarded. Has this happened to anyone else?

The other thing is sometimes, when trying to access the Skyrim workshop, the Steam window just goes white, and remains that way until i exit Steam and open it up again. The recent news feeds that appear underneath the game in the game library has also stopped updating. Now, it has done that before, when i first played Skyrim but i had to reinstall Windows anyway so the problem went away when Steam was reinstalled.

Is Steam messed up? Did my mods do it?

I'm hoping someone can help me here, cheers!

These are bugs with the Steam client. Or more accurately the webkit client they use. Stuff like this comes and goes on a regular basis.

I just subscribed to each mod in turn, that's it. I didn't consider i'd need a mod manager!

I'm running, in load order:

Official high res texture packs
Dawnguard
Hearthfire
Auto unequip ammo
Stones of Barenziah quest markers
Batter dynamic snow
Birds and flocks Hearthfire edition
Chopping block/wood fires fix
Enhanced blood textures 2.5 dawnguard
Elvenwood
HD plants and herbs
HQ snow texture
Leveling merchant's wallets
That's ice
Water and terrain enhancement redux
Better embers

I was also running the better trees mod, but i unsubscribed from that. I have stopped auto update of Skyrim also.

Mod load order is important - not using a manager can cause game instability as I found out when I first started.

I personally use NMM - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/modmanager to load my mods then Boss - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6 to organise the mods then Tes5edit - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25859 to resolve any conflicts and potential problems as indicated by boss (this has made my game run a lot smoother).

Thanks for the advice; i'll give them a try. The game itself runs perfectly for the most part, it's just Steam that seems to be a bit temperamental for me at the moment.

I've been having a lot of trouble working out shadows. Finally conceded that there is no easy fix and turned them to the lowest settings. Blindly my fps is smooth and swift now! This is probably helped by the HiAlgo mod I installed, too.

It feels wrong to have all the settings really high on my old machine and yet punch out a beautiful and fast game!

I'm using step to mod skyrim. In the guide they recommend Project ENB and Enhanced Vanilla ENB.I've just finished with texture pack combanier (all optional mods ProjectParallax as well ),and now I want to choose ENB,but two I wrote above aren't that popular.SKYRIM ENHANCED SHADERS FX - ENB by Tapioks,Cinematic Lighting ENB - CLENB - by HD6 I'm thinking about choosing one of these, are they fully compatible with TPC?

Will I get better effect if I combine one of them with Realistic Lighting With Customization?

Skyrim: High Resolution Texture Pack (Free DLC)
HD Textures DLC Fix
Bethesda Hi-Res DLC Optimized by Vano89
Unofficial Skyrim patch by Kivan and Arthmoor
USKP addon

I'm lost with these. How should I edit ini? in data files which should I uncheck?
thanks for help

Apologies for the noobness but how do I change the load order in mod manager?

I've run BOSS which I'm guessing gives you the suggested order to change to?
