The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - MODS & TWEAKS

When I was running a 690 the VRAM was the main problem when it came to modding Skyrim. It held me back, and I ended up using the official Bethesda packs as the basis for scenery, with the bulk of the vram going into skin textures for my character.

It became the main reason for upgrading to a 980, as I became inscreasingly frustrated with having stacks of GPU grunt to run ENB but ran out of vram very quickly otherwise.

Yup know the feeling. I grabbed a second 670 for a bargain, and I don't play that many games these days, so I couldn't justify spending any more for a new card...

Post back when you're up and running with the ENB. Take it slowly. Install a few mods at a time, and then boot the game up. If you get a CTD, run TES5 Edit, see which mods are borking up, and then fault find that particular one.

The vanilla game

Vanilla looks quite nice with injected SSAO from Nvidia/Catalyst but once you put an ENB on it and press SHIFT+F12 it's like... How the hell did I ever play this vanilla!? Then you have a break and come back and play it vanilla again and it looks nice with enhanced graphics and then you put the ENB on and wonder the same again, it's so odd!

I don't think its due to the washed out color scheme of Skyrim, I think it's down to the fact that the color palette is super limited and you can go for the washed out look with more than brown and gray. Skyrim colors kinda suck!

I've only just started playing this - took me a while to get into it, I've never played/enjoyed fantasy games before. The sheer number of mods is overwhelming, but I've seen some awesome shots.

I'm running completely vanilla - should I stay this way or what?

If you're happy with it then don't worry about it.

A few mods does make it better though and you'll work out how you want to improve the experience as you go whether its the UI, graphics, items etc....

It will depend on what your system can handle so keep that in mind.

No, no you should not :P
GET the unofficial patch http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/19/?
And the unofficial patch for any DLC you own.

Modding is wonderfully personal, you can make Skyrim many times greater than what it is, but it's all subjective. That patch though, objectively fixes a lot of crap!

Even on vanilla, I'd recommend the unofficial patches and the memory fixing mods. Doesn't change anything about the game, just fixes bugs and makes it more stable.

Good point...

I forgot to mention the skse memory edit. This is ESSENTIAL!

Hi mate,

I haven't had time to start installing mods yet, but just curious to see what you use/recommend from the 'More Recommended Mods' section? There are a lot of mods that achieve the same thing so I'm being careful to not just simply pull them all down.

This time round I want skyrim to be as realistic looking as possible whilst at a decent frame rate, hence why I've gone for the lite textures. At 1080p there won't be much visual difference between 2k and 4k anyway.

Installed the ENBoost memory patch and my CTD problems seem to have been reduced, if not removed entirely (not had one yet.)

Would recommend you put this in if you haven't already.

The only ones I used from that list are

SkyUI
All the patches
Convenient horses
Audio Overhaul for Skyrim
Showracemenu precache killer
Skybirds
Enhanced blood textures
Deadly spell impacts
Bijin Warmaidens (used the guys presets as the basis for my character. Some very good work in here and the lad is great to communicate with)

As a rule anything in the top 25 overall is pretty much mandatory. Go through the catergories and then pick out five or so from the top 25 in each catergory.

Don't mess with UGrids. Seriously, don't. NVidias guide was written way before the community knew what a higher UGrids did to your save file.

Be careful when adding new worlds like Falskaar. The game will put quest items in them. I once had to retrieve a part of the crossbow for the Dawnguard in a Falskaar cavern and the guy who made the mod had made enemies what seemed like level 2,000,000,000. Five swipes with a double enchanted Dragonbone warhammer only reduced their energy down by 1/3. Yep.

Oh yeah, and if you have a female character, CBBE + BBP Physics extensions is mandatory too, although a lot of lads prefer UNP. Don't know why.

I've used ugrids 7 for a while and not had any issue. Naturally, if you're using obscene values like 11+ then you might have issue, as some events are triggered when you 'load the cell', which can cause issue if you're actually 100 miles away from that cell.
