The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - MODS & TWEAKS

Guys before you do ANY modding backup your entire Skyrim installation to DVD.

It uses just 2 DVDs and it will save you a world of pain if you really mess something up. Ive done it and it used 2 DVDs and one CD.

Of course doesnt have to be DVD, create another folder on your HD or send it to an external HD. The entire installation will even fit on a USB stick!

Takes a few minutes to delete modded folders and verify files on Steam.

You can just backup the textures folder after you have got it to a stage where its working perfectly. None of the other files in the Skyrim directory should need replacing if you mess a mod up.

There are no official textures in the textures folder afaik. You can simply delete that folder altogether.

Some things might be overwritten in the Interface folder, you need to disable all esp/esm files and all SKSE/Script Dragon/ENB and Injector configs.

SKSE - where does it go? I've tried manualy and using the nexus mod manager and the SKYUI mod keeps telling me there's a problem (in game) and it may not be running correctly.

Thoughts?

From the readme...

[ Installation ]

1. Copy the .dll and .exe files to your Skyrim directory. This is usually in your Program Files folder under Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\. If you see files named TESV and SkyrimLauncher, this is the correct folder. Do not copy these files to the Data folder as with a normal mod. The "src" folder is only useful for programmers, most users can ignore it.
then launch as this...

...with NMM :)

Clicking on the red box will launch SKSE and then the game, having applied the mods as listed within NMM.

Hmm, I don't have that option so I've done something wrong. Thank you, I'll have a look and come back if I can't figure it out :)

I don't either, it doesn't matter as you don't have to run it through NMM. Just put the SKSE files in your Skyrim folder and create a shortcut to SKSE loader on your desktop and then run the game from there.

My problem apparently was that I must have clicked on reset Archiveinvalidation in NMM which can cause textures to go mad!

You can also get this message if something isn't up to date, or too up to date. Basically SKSE takes time to be updated to the latest game patch, then the mods that use SKSE need to be updated as well.

Just a thought, but check everything you are trying to run plays nice with each other as their current versions.

Practically every popular mod on Nexus and everything on Steam Workshop work with the latest Skyrim patch (not beta) so unless SKSE is not installed properly, it should work just fine.

  1. Extract skse_loader.exe, skse_1_4_21.dll and skse_steam_loader.dll to the main Skyrim folder. Latest version of SKSE can always be found here.
  2. Copy dinput8.dll and ScriptDragon.dll files from the bin folder in ScriptDragon archive to /Skyrim. ScriptDragon is required by some mods that use its scripts.
  3. Install SkyBoost R5 to improve performance in some areas.

Any thoughts on the "sexy" series of retextures? They do kind of look a bit too much, but I might give them a go.

Which ones are we specifically talking about?

I'm using Dimonized UNP female body textures now, the meshes are better than the default ones IMO and it looks better on my female character.

Not that I dress her up or anything. :p

Aah no, I meant the Sexy Whiterun, Sexy Riften, Windhelm etc:p

Looking at screenshots they look a bit funny, I like the overall change in vibe, but Whiterun especially looks a bit too colorful imo.

I haven't bothered with Windhelm, as I don't like the look of the screenies.

I see Imps More Complex Needs has been released, it was great in FO3, but I'm not sure it is really needed in this tbh. The basic one maybe, but the rest has always been OTT imo.

Looks good, a game like Skyrim needs a little more complexity to be honest.

On an unrelated note, I remember you giving me some advice in the Fallout 3 modding thread. Did you use Wrye Bash in that game by any chance and if so, any experience with it for modding Skyrim?

A little contribution from me, Portable Campsite by Mcxar, looks like a necessity with the Imps mod.

I didn't use WryBash for FO3 or NV as I got it pretty stable using merged patches and masterupdates with Fallout Edit, which was a great program for finding clashes and fixing them. I don't know if something similar will come out for Skyrim. In New Vegas especially, modders seemed to work together much more to really improve compatibility between their work, so a lot less messing around was needed.

I had to use Wrybash for Oblivion iirc, but that was because I was trying to use 3-4 massive overhauls which would not work well together(FCOM, OOO, MMM, COBL). In that case(years ago) I had to follow a guide;).

I would very much like to start looking in to creating a few mods myself actually, but haven't gotten round to it yet.

^^^ that campsite will be handy in conjunction with Imps definitely.

I hate resampling from 2560x1440 to 1280x720, loses a lot of detail. :(

Have to admit, I think the "sexy mods" make the game look worse in my opinion. There's already a ton of mods that make the game look better however these mods don't. :)
