So this is just a report and by the looks of it the Express is just scaremongering?

THE EU is to launch a £3 BILLION defence research and development programme with the ultimate aim of merging the continent's militaries into one gargantuan Euro army, Express.co.uk can exclusively reveal today.

With such a big scoop, i wonder how they have an exclusive on it

Citation for Junker's comments?

I don't think any member state would need permission to defend it's own sovereign territory against invasion. To have otherwise would be silly.

:o This citiation needed business is getting somewhat tiresome now. http://www.theguardian.com/world/20...calls-for-eu-army-european-commission-miltary

We won't be able to defend our own sovereign territory because we won't be a sovereign state. It'll be EU sovereign territory and the decision to be made in Brussels would be whether it's worth putting European soldier's lives at risk for the sake of a remnant of the British Empire. We in Britain might think it's a good idea, but I can't see anyone else agreeing.

What will even happen to British Overseas Territories like the Falklands' if we vote to stay? Will they become part of the EU?

Would you agree with EU using British troops being if it was against out national interest?

Also interesting thought experiment: would have have joined the US in military action in Iraq if there was this EU only force? Probably not.

I still don't think such a force is necessarily a good idea, but it's interesting none the less.

Forget the Falklands scorza, the EU is coming for the women. All that bad mixing, the stuff of nightmares!

Would we have gone into Sierra Leone if there was only an EU army?

Imagine what sort of colour the human beings might end up being?

It wont end until the only ones left are those blue and white striped fellas with purple dots.

Best build that wall now before we go through the Dulux colour pad of hell as our women get taken away to develop these anti British spawn.

If you're going to make all of these assertions, then you need to be prepared to back them up if challenged. That's the nature of informed discussions.

None of the text in that article says that individual national armies would be subsumed by an EU force. The EU force would most likely be an expeditionary force that is in addition to national commitments as I find it hard to believe that EU member states would give that up.

Like I said, territory will stay sovereign to the UK and we will still have assets to fight abroad if necessary.

We all know it's coming - Juncker has stated as much. Wonder where that would leave places like the Falkland Islands if we had to get the permission of all 28 member states before we could take military action against a hostile invading force?

Juncker can say he wants an EU army all he wants; he can't get it unless the EU nations unanimously agrees to it. What do you think the chances of that are? I think an EU defence force makes sense, but I think there's little or no chance of it happening.

Even if there is an EU defence force agreed what planet are you on that makes you think this would mean we would be unable to defend our territories overseas. Just co-operating on defence doesn't mean we give up our independent military. If we did get far enough to unify the European military you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be accompanied by agreements that it will always be deployed in the defence of EU territories.

No offence, but if I was taking part in an informed discussion then you would have already been aware of Juncker's thoughts on Defence. It was a bit story this time last year.

Well that's a lot of faith your putting in Jean-Claude Juncker not wanting to create a federal super-state.

I didn't know Juncker has final say over every EU state.

Just last page i was asked for citations twice. When i post them, all of a sudden the specific topic ends. ;)

Seems like both sides are asking for sources but one side uses the comment section of articles and 'could and would' future guessing as well as the phrase 'we all know...' a bit more than the other side.

I was aware. Your citation didn't back up your claims which was pretty much the point of asking.

In Brussels there are ways of getting what you want without getting all member states to agree. For example, remember when Tony Blair came back and said he had secured an opt-out for Britain over the Charter of Fundamental Rights, only for that opt-out to get destroyed by the ECJ later and ruled illegal.

I really fon't trust our mp's to do a better job. They seem to look after their own as much as EU mp's do. Hi speed rail vs NHS investment for example.
I also can't see non EU countries wanting to trade with us without some benefit like a way into Europe.
I suspect pretty much all of our recent success has more to do with being in Europe rather than being British.
If we exit and Scotland with Wakes decide to rejoin the EU, then what.
I say we should stand up for ourselves in the EU, standing alone just seems so much like an ostrich sticking it's head in the ground.
Europe as a whole is so much more effective, even the US wold prefer to deal with us as part of the EU.
Andi.

At least he got agreement from all member states which is the difficult part.

But not something that can't just be overturned later(?) That's my understanding, but I could be wrong. Hope I am.
Basically this deal we have, isn't written the paper it's written on (assuming it's written somewhere)
