The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

What shirt and tie combo would you wear for a navy suit, and I mean a light, French navy.

Can't be too brash - more on the conservative side. White shirt and navy tie?

White shirt is the obvious go to. Could get away with a light pink shirt as well. Depending on how dark the blue is, you could go for a sky blue shirt as well.

A maroon tie will look good, maybe red. I wouldn't go for a solid blue tie though with a solid blue suit. Will look a little too much blue.

Right I'm trying to sort out my work wardrobe. Don't need a suit but a couple of nice shirts and trousers is what I'm after. Thinking of going to somewhere like Charles Tyrwhitt or TM Lewin to get measurements and find something that fits well. I normally just go to Next but the fit is never quite right.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm thinking of getting some desert boots. For anyone who has them, are the Clark's originals worth the extra price over a cheaper pair? Also should I size down slightly as I have read most people recommending it. Thanks.

Bit of a mini thread revival but this seems the best place to put my query.

I'm looking to get a couple of casual blazers that will go with jeans or casual trousers but the fits "off the rack" are poor. My body shape has changed a fair bit due to hitting the weights and I used to be able to get a good fit with slim-fit suits without adjustments.
Is it standard for 46" jackets not being suitable for 16.5" arms? A couple I couldn't even get my arms all the way down the sleeves due to the arm hole size.
Only had 20 mins the other day to try on 5-6 jackets in JL and H&M. I'm by no means hench or stocky so am surprised.
Is a tailored jacket the only option? I don't really want to spend more than £150 on a jacket.

Show me an online photo of what boot cut means to you.

You can have very subtle boot cuts, they dont need to look like flares.

Honestly mate, bootcut in any shape or form whether subtle or not do not belong in your fashion thread.
If we are talking fashion then straight fitting are not even fashionable at the moment, Levis have brought out a tapered 501 to reflect this:

I typed into Google men's bootcut jeans and here's the top results, all horrendous, Simon Cowell wears bootcut jeans, not a good look.

I don't see what the problem is with Bootcut. Quite honestly not everyone has the leg/body shape to get away with the current skinny jeans or drainpipes you only seem to be able to find in shops.

From definitely not ignoring leg days over the years I would look nothing short of comical in a pair of skinny jeans. Plus not everyone wants to dress like everyone else. I'm not exactly Mr. fashion but I've always hated how in a lot of high street shops you only have options for specific styles/colours when (IMO) it's just a case of mindless trends that people follow rather than finding their own style.

I think a lot is to be said for getting the right length jeans as some of the ones in the pictures look silly as they are probably a few inches too long in the leg.

I've been a bootcut man for years but have taken to wearing 501s in work with nice shirts - I look a little like a vet or a gp on call in my work get up :)

Having worn the 501s and purchased a couple of straight looking jeans from Superdry (yes, I know but I'm terribly picky with jeans and they were the only ones I liked, forgive me, but I like SDry stuff :o but their jeans are usually horrendous)

I've lost a little weight recently and put on some boot cut jeans on the weekend and they felt just big everywhere so think they will end up in the DIY/Car tinkering clothes pile!

I would say very skinny is never going to happen with me - at 37, wearing skinnies with your crotch swinging between your knees just isn't going to work. :)

Oh dear... then I recommend starting your own thread where your own myopic view of what constitutes fashion fashion will go down a treat I'm sure. :)

Sadly I stand no chance of getting into anything slim and I think the slim trend can look a little silly on some people. Although I am back down to a 30" waist I can't get my thighs into 511s. Standard straight 501s fit me far better. Trying to get into "fashionable" jeans is comedy for me. Anyway I think it is better to develop an individual style rather than following "fashion".
