So NVIDIA doesn't currently have a high end product and wont until next year.

Ridiculous...
...and all of this is happening because AMD stacked their new gen cards pricing on top of/along side with last gen cards (basically charging last year performance at last year's price). This wouldn't have happened if they priced the 7950 and 7970 at the same launch price as 6950 and 6970 (might be just a little bit higher). £100 higher is simply too much.

It will be a lot more than £420, I have a rule never to buy a graphics card that costs more than £300, the GTX680 is an exception as its better than a 7970 but cheaper... can't argue with that.

I doubt it TBH. I see the GTX780 coming out and the GTX680 being rebranded as a GTX760 or GTX770 with a lower price tag.

There is another thing though, the GTX580 has dropped down to around £300 now too and the standard price might possibly drop even further.

Even OcUK have a GTX580 for around £288 on special offer:

I honestly don't see that happening. If nVidia are holding out and releasing a better card down the line, how will AMD respond.. they don't have a card higher than the 7970 (7990 is dual GPU).

When nVidias better cards come out end of the year, AMD will respond with super OC versions of their 7970 with possibly more VRAM. Even then both these nVidia and ATI cards will be out of my price range.

Nvidia are not restraining themselves from releasing products, they are delayed.

Seeing as the 7970 was launched in December last year, they should be well on their way to coming out with the next generation card by the end of the year. GCN 2.0 possibly.

The way I see it is 7970 nad GTX680 are their best offerings. In a few months time nVidia will be launching a competitior to the 7950. Then end of the year their launching a card better than the GTX680 meanwhile AMD have a chip in the pipeline that's better than the 7970.

Is the about right? If so the GTX680 at £420 is a no brainer as it won't be reduced by much in price by the end of this year. Its safe to say AMD's rumoured card and the >GTX680 card will both be around £500+ which is out of my budget.

I was very close to getting the Sapphire OC 7950 for £380, but of the GTX680 is only £40 more it doesn't make sense.

The only way I can see that changing is if AMD kept any gas in the tank with Southern Islands and has a competitor. IE - this Tenerife thing. Unless that was hot air I think they will get the top spot back, which will drive down the 680 price.

Which is good. So whilst yes, I think the 680 is going to be a great GPU and am realising now that it will beat the 7970 I just don't think AMD are done just yet.

Are you that bad at reading? I clearly said the 7950 and 7970 are £100-£150 higher in price than the 6950 and 6970!

Right so everyone's discussing the 680 in the 680 thread & you're quoting people discussing this and waffling unrelated waffle about 7950 & 7970s.

LOL

So just to clarify, your point in the 680 discussion thread where we're all currently talking about whether a 680 is a worthwhile purchase or not is that 7950s & 7970s are between 100 & 150 quid more than their predecessors the 6950 & 6970 respectively and this is simply too high.

Fascinating....

I'm going to wait until Ivy Bridge for my next build by which time the GFX market will of settled and we'll have a better idea of where the GTX680 stands and wht else is on the horizon.

If the 680 is actually meant to be a mid range card, what will the mid range card then be? A 680 just with lower clock speed, less shaders etc?
