As much as I want a 580 it would have to be priced substantially less than a 7950 for me to pick one up.
Exactly. Sure it's a price drop but they're just bringing it in-line with the 7950, which offers considerably better overclocking potential. They'd need to drop it to £275 to get anyone to care.
 
I have got bored of all this talk/waiting/guesswork and just bought another 6950. Unless this series is absolutely mind blowing I am gonna skip a generation. I am happy (for now) with good performance for £300 total.

I understand what you are saying but if somebody has just built a new PC and wants high end gfx and tends to favour Nvidia, then this is a good price for a 580 IMO.
 
The GK104/GTX 680 will have 1536 CUDA cores and a 256-bit memory controller connected to 2GB of GDDR5 memory (4GB will be an option).

Can someone explain what that means about the 4gb?

A 256bit memory bus will be addressed by 8x memory modules. Each module can be 128MB to 512MB in size providing the following options.

8x 128MB = 1GB VRAM (too little for a card of such power)
8x 256MB = 2GB VRAM (Probably the sweatspot for single monitor setups up to 2560x1600 resolution)
8x 512MB = 4GB VRAM (maybe worthwhile for multi-monitor setups)

The 7970 on the other hand has a 384bit bus (like the GTX580). This allows for 1.5GB, 3GB, and possibly 6GB versions. So far only 3GB has been released, but 1.5GB is due soon.
 
I wonder how the new GTX580 RRP of $339 (£217+VAT = ~£260) will interact with Kepler pricing? Taking into account that GK104 is NOT the direct successor to GF110, will they price at similar levels or higher? I think $399 (~£300) still looks a fair bet.

Better sell my 580 (or buy another:)) quick.
