The first "proper" Kepler news Fri 17th Feb?

This is a prediciment for a few I bet. The longer you wait the cheaper the 580 will get IMO but that doesn't help you if you want the new Kepler, when the specs are finally released.

If this is indeed the midrange part, and everything points to it being so, there is no guarantee it will be a decent upgrade from a 580

Seems to me the reduction in price of the the 580 is to make room for a Keplar part at the top end, which would suggest it is going to be more powerful than a 580. Would seem crazy to have a similar performing part in the same price bracket. If so it doesn't bode well for a significant drop in 7970 prices.

It WILL be the GTX680 according to Fud...

I'm quite sure it will be called the GTX 680, however if the rumours are true that it has the same sized die as 7970, is internally called GK104 (not 110/100 that previous x80 parts have been) and has a 256 bit vram interface then it won't be the high end part for this generation. According to previous Nvidia internal names GK104 would make this part the 660.

I very much suspect that kepler out performed 79xx to such a degree that they could release a midrange part, or at least what was going to be the 670, and it be on par with the 7970

Patience is very much a virtue, especially as far as waiting for Nvidia is concerned.

The choice will be easier once we have more information on the specs and performance of each card and when they're going to be launched.

I read that the 670ti was a smoke screen.

Apparently it was a 680 but with a dumbed down bios on it (hence the 40% bios).

So from what I heard it's 680 only. Which makes sense. Next step down - 580 (which is now the same price as the 7950) then 570ti etc.

Nvidia still have a full product line up just by using what they have now and adding a top end card to it.

So my new improved list about the GK104:
1.)Semi-skimmed GTX670TI was 5% slower than HD7970
2.)Magic BIOS flash gives 40% faster speed than HD7970 for GTX670TI
3.)GTX680 was 10% faster than HD7970
4.)Speed of GTX680 with Magic BIOS unknown
5.)3DMark11 score 15% higher than HD7970
4,)Semi-skimmed GK104 has 3DMark11 score 5% lower than HD7970
5.)Consumes less power than an HD7970 and is a 195W card
6.)Has a smaller die
7.)Has 2GB or 4GB of VRAM
8.)Can use system RAM
9.)Shorter PCB than a GTX570
10.)Is only $299
11.)Has backlit GEFORCE GTX logo on the top of the card
12.)Is the PhysX MASTER
13.)Has single card surround
14.)Is the UE4 MASTER
15.)Has the same memory bandwidth as the GTX580
16.)Does some other stuff that I might go WTF at
17.)Uses a Vapor chamber
18.)Uses an HT like technology
19.)Uses a Turbo Boost like technology
20.)There is no GTX670 but only a GTX680 as the former was a smokescreen
21.)Most of the rumours are not true at all
22.)The card launches today
23.)Availability will be poor at launch

That is all the rumours I can find ATM.

My list from early today. It looks like number 22 has fallen already.

The 23RD of March is mentioned again as a launch date:

So basically all the Quadro and Tesla cards are going to be GF110 based for the foreseeable future or are GF104 cards meant to be replace them?? I would think the major point of developing the GK110 would be for commercial and professional uses, where Nvidia makes most of its money from.

I doubt we will see GK104 based Tesla cards. Quadro perhaps, but Tesla is compute-oriented, and I suspect that a lot of the compute features (e.g. fast interconnects) will be stripped from GK104.

Besides, the time pressure isn't so great in the compute market. A delay of a few months is not so critical as in the gaming market - especially as they have no real competition in this area (CUDA is still the only standard that's heavily used in the scientific computing community - OpenCL etc represent very tiny niche applications by comparison).

GK110 will represent the next generation of compute products - it would surprise me very much if we see Tesla cards based on GK104.
