The great 30-70 thread

I don;t have stats fro mine unfortunatley. Official ones for 50-70 are 7.5sec in 4th, but I know mine is somewhat quicker as I've upped the boost somewhat. I did collate some foigures a while back from when I had a datalogger on it. Trying to find those now.

Thats my video clip I did and I did take it upto 68-72mph as indicated on speedometer which could be out who knows, whats the going rate for them been out, 1-2% which would make my actual speed more like 65mph if its out?

speedos are anything between 0 - 10% out. my M5 is about 3% out compared to GPS. the 200 was 7% out compared to GPS. on both cars the aftermarket wheel/tyre combination had a larger rolling radius (marginally) and so reduced this amount marginally.

i would allow 5% roughly.

also my mates import prelude has a very dodgy KPH to MPH conversion. i was always impressed when looking at the speedo, then i realise why! i dont know by what figure exactly its out but it feels like at least 10% more than a normal car :(

Nah his speedo his accurate, must be his driving thats halved the 30-70 with a 10% increase in power. :p

I think the MG will do this in about 6s, another car that will hit 70 in 2nd, I'll pop out at lunch time and see if I can get a run up the M3 for you all :D K750i videos are good enough right?

From watching the video I do actually floor it just before 30mph I think still its gonna have little effect on the end result. :)
Have to disagree there. You may not have floored it much before 30 but you were still accelerating and so would have been on boost. Cruising at 30 and then planting it would surely have introduced a delay whilst the turbo spools up?

Regardless of the details, it's certainly quick!

arent diesels meant to be really good at this sort of thing?
30 to 70mph is damn awkward in mine. If I use 3rd gear then 30mph equates to about 1800rpm which is just about the perfect place to start as I'm getting maximum torque but by the time I'm doing 70mph I'm at 4200rpm and should have changed up way before then.

If I use 4th then 30mph equates to about 1400-1500rpm which is too low and I'm sitting there for what seems like an age waiting for the turbo to come in.

Even using 3rd gear, if I cruise at 30 and then plant it there's a pause while the boost comes in. If I start around 20-25 and accelerate hard from there then I'm accelerating much harder as I pass through 30.

If these times were in 4th gear then yes

Most of them will do 70 in 3rd. Mine I doubt would as its lacking compared to my first 306. The screw mod shall yield unbeatable results I tell thee ;) :o

Edit : Will try it when I have my new gearbox and clutch fitted.

Most will do it in 2nd, what i meant was that a diesel would get the best times comparatively if the times were done in 4th gear.

He's doing his in 2nd, would a manufacturer's quoted time not be in 3rd or 4th or something? Which would explain the difference...

Show me an average diesel car that will do 70 in second. It just doesn't happen!! Why the best time comparatively in 4th? You are way off boost in 4th at 30mph. Sure i use it to potter around town on flats, but theres not a great deal of power there, if any.

My point was purely aimed at the poster who said that diesels are good at 30-70. Obviously they are not, one of the reasons you have mentioned, aswell as the power delivery.

If all the cars did it in 4th then the diesel would probably do pretty well, obviously you missed me point.

will the m5 do it in 2nd?

speedo indicated - yeah.

OP asked for 3rd though. i dont think it would be masses quicker as there is so much torque all over the rev range. 2nd might be 4-4.5? :)
