The Hunter

Ballistics aren't yet included in the game. I'm terrified of the day they are!Need to get my high range shots in before that day as afterwards I'll never hit again :p

Also, you may not have missed - remember to check your statistics a few seconds after the shot to see if you actually hit it, sometimes you do and they run off but later fall and die. Your stats will say hit accuracy 100% or whatnot.

Don't go by the kills per hit stat, that doesnt register until you confirm the kill.

How do you check your stats in game?

Also, is there a control list anywhere? I was a bit miffed by the lack of in game options to let you check controls and stuff like that.

I did have a look around to see if I had hit it but I couldn't find anything.

I don't think you can customise controls yet.
I didn't know straight away that you can hold space to steady your aim, toggle running and walking with E and press alt+f4 to strangehold a sleeping elk (havent tried the last yet) :p.

As for stats, you can't check them ingame, but a few seconds after taking a shot that shot will register on the website under the stats of your last hunt. Last hunt is effectively current hunt, so you can quickly see if you wounded that animal (worthwhile to chase it down) or missed completely (sit tight and lure em back).

That's either a very cruel trick or my keyboard is ******-up!

Fortunately, I tried it at the start of a hunt not half way through :)

I'm sorry, it was a joke that the lead game designer made in an interview someone posted earlier :p Alt+F4 is the windows shortcut for exiting an application.

Sorry! :P

Unfortunately, the noob in me fell for it :)

Was looking forward to a ninja stylee chop'n'wrestle, got Google instead!

I mistook my first sleeping Elk for a stone and almost prone-crawled into it, until it shot up and legged it. I papped it at the time.

Saw this thread at the weekend and thought I'd give it ago. Ended up spending most of Sunday playing it and getting my flat mate and another mate playing it. All on Vent chatting about what we where tracking/kills etc. Adds a bit of competitiveness to it and helps with the quieter moments a bit as one of you is normally on a track/kill at anyone time.

Plus as we where all just starting out and none of us bothered to read the help on the web etc we where all learning and helping each other. V.good fun, really hope they make this multiplayer. But maybe limit to 4/5 players. Would be nice to get a few mates on Vent, grabs some beers and smoke and spend a few hours hunting. :D

Going to play it some more this week to see if I want to buy a warden license before the 30th cut off. But after yesterday I think it's more a question of 3, 6 or 12 months, not whether I will or not. :D

Big thanks to the OP for the thread and for who ever was keeping it on the FP at the weekend. :)

I would really like to try this as it looks stunning and very relaxing, but...... - and I know how odd this may sound to some - but I would feel bad killing deer, etc and would much rather be hunting down a person.

I know what you mean, but a headshot is a headshot :)

The worst is when you wound a deer and then find it breathing heavily and you have to do the right thing, then delivering a blood splattered headshot with a pistol from 1 yard. Quality.

Wouldn't do it in real life, but doing it on a PC seems "OK".

Hmm can we please take this thread away from the ethics/morality discussion of hunting e-deer please?

It's an e-deer, e-elk, e-turkey. Please do not confuse them with animals they were modelled on from real life!

In all serious, don't feel bad, they love it :D

You say that. But after walking around for an hour or two with out getting a sniff when you do see one you'll be all "blam, take that you £$£%&@#".

Well maybe not that bad but you'll feel you've earned the kill after the work you have put in and you'll be to engrossed in it all to worry too much.

Luckily for me though my kills have either dropped on the spot or ran off and been dead by the time I've caught up with them. Not caught up with one yet and had to finish it off, so might find that a bit harder on the old heart strings. Especially if it was a female, Bambi's mum and all that. :(

Argh this thing is annoying, i followed three trails and im near north of the small island i have no clue where to go apart from the V mark but i go all over in it run of course cos i aint walkin or crawling as it would take hours. No deer not one animal just birds and insects i can see. Any tips?

It does look great the environment it beats crysis i reckon easily with foliage and lighting.

if you want the idiots easy kill guide just go to meadows and watch towers.
try near middle lake and read the whole thread.

trails do waste a lot of time but for elk you really do need them cause there sneaky mothas :p you will find them grazing but most of time you have to track them in forest.

The V is just a rough marker of the direction they 'where' heading, there's nothing to say they changed their mind after 10 feet and turned another way entirely. And then based on their 'roaming speed' how far they may have wondered off in the time you are looking for them.

You need to try and find three markers for the same animal, normally one or two tracks for the direction and then one lot of droppings for the distance. It works out how fresh the dropping are and then it's roaming speed to give you a circled area from there, then the tracks give you a rough direction.

A nice small solid circle is a sign you are v.near and probably time to get low and move slow. A big circle, especialy a broken circle means you are tracking an animal that is probably long gone so you'll need to move on a bit and hope to pick up the trail again.

One thing is don't be scared to drop your current trail and pick up a new one, as if you subsequently find the first trail again it will remember the previous tracks and switch back to it. I've often had two, three, four lots on the go. But saying that you can end up going in circles and each time you revisit the same ones the trail gets staler.

Also make sure you can spot the difference between new tracks, more of a red semi-circle of light over the track, and an old one, more of a glowing dome over the track.

But also remember the game is fairly dynamic each time. Just because you are having a bad hunt doesn't mean you are doing it wrong. Sometimes you won't see a single thing for hours, sometimes all you'll get it stale trails and sometimes you'll be seeing/shooting deer left and right with out even having to track them.

The bad hunts suck but, imo, it's part of what makes the game and, I guess, hunting irl.
