The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Well woke up to do a another Epic KOM yesterday in prep for it's release so didn't expect to see it. I did the climb in almost exactly an hour at a steady pace which sets my base time for future attempts!

My NEO cooling fan hasn't span so fast since I bought it :)

I paced myself nice and steady but being a fat lump, I’m the slowest up the Alpe out of all the OcUK attempts :o:p:D

Had my first attempt at a proper session using the powertap hub, didn't go totally to plan.

I did calibrate before getting on the turbo but the power shown seemed to feel like double the effort, kept at it until my chain came off and I had to relax the resistance roller to get it back on.

When I got on the power levels felt more normal so continued with as many 30s efforts as I could be arsed with.

You can see the speed is higher in the first 3 and power is lower even though they hurt like hell.

Real reason I'm here is to see if there is a way to remove turbo miles from yearly totals?

The Stravistix add on has a bit for including virtual rides but I can't see a way to remove indoor cycling from it.

Pick someone off the street stick them on a trainer and see how far they get! They'll probably be puking after 10 mins so congrats on doing it. I'll never be particularly fit as I'm too now old but my recovery time is superb from the regular exercise. All sorts of benefits for day to day stuff.

Rode half the Alpe last night easy on the TT. Nice steady climb but make sure your resistance is wound back to about 50% on Zwift first as it’s steep & you may run out of gears!

I didn’t realize that you could adjust resistance. Is that not cheating?

How does that work for “races”?

No as you do the same amount of work regardless it's more of a fine tuning tool to match your gearing and training feel or preferred cadence.. Full description below.

On my Tacx NEO if I set 100% then it will go up to 25% gradient but I've only managed to briefly cycle up to 18% but as above I was totally out of gearing to go higher.

bimbleuk is correct, it isnt cheating in so much as if you do 200W up a 10% hill with the trainer at 100% setting, then if you do the same hill at 200W but set it to 50%, it will feel like a 5% hill but you will go slower up that hill to compensate (or it should do in theory). Else 200W up a 5% hill would travel faster than 200W up a 10% hill

The main purpose of the adjustment is to compenaste for the differences between dumb trainers and smart trainers. On a dumb trainer without any resistance control, doing 200W up a hill feels exactly the same as doing 200W on the flat or down hill. On a smart trainer you get resistance going up a hill, slight resistance on the flat and none going down hill. As you can see, the dumb trainer would be faster down hill because youre holding 200W regardless of terrain whereas holding 200W down hill on a smart trainer with no resistance is a lot harder. The trainer difficulty is in part a work around fix for it.

I have my trainer resistance set to 85%. Mainly because I want to replicate steep climbs to improve my ability to ride up them in the real world.

It seems pointless spending more money on a trainer that can replicate a steep climb, only then to change the setting to reduce the gradient %.

I think i might give adjusting it a go. I presume mine is set to 100% and i recall really struggling on an 11% climb. I just assumed it was because i'm a beginner and i'd get better eventually!

The default setting is 50%

Trainer Difficulty is set at 50% by default, which is why Zwift says it “treats the gradient as half of the true grade.” So when you hit a 10% grade in Zwift, it feels like a 5% grade in the real world.

Why does Zwift default to 50% and not 100%? I’m not completely sure, but my guess is it has a lot to do with lower-end smart trainers only supporting maximum grades of ~7%

I'm one more 30-40 minute ride or so from getting to level 12. Can't wait to give the Alpe a go, I'm sure my time will be awful :D

I've just weighed myself for the first time in over 3 months. I'm 2.3kg lighter than I thought I was. Time to update my Zwift profile.

I'm stuck at bang on 70 kilos, trying to shift a bit extra weight ready for track season (4 weeks away) but my kids keep bringing god damn tasty biscuits/cakes/snacks/breads home from school.

Winner winner chicken dinner!

B grade win on London up & down race, 30km up and and down Box Hill. Chose the Emonda with 202s and it was worth it, the split guaranteed to come on the hill, but after passing the top I drilled it over the pinch to gap a few riders and make them chase first lap.
Supreme riding and a good win! Congrats! Your power figures the last couple of months are looking strong, along with the race results! Great progress! Similar mileage to me and I'm feeling slow and losing power & fitness. Totally jealous! lol :D :p

Times like this i wish i'd bought a cheaper trainer that doesn't replicate such steep hills! Although at a lowly level 2 so far i've a lot of miles to go to unlock it :p

You can ride it in a group training ride, or a race if you've not got it unlocked. You can only 'free ride' it when over level 12.

But Alpe D'Huez is so easy. They should have used a proper climb!
Pffft! It's hard enough trust me! :p

Did a fairly evenly paced effort up it on saturday morning along with a jungle loop and then a little more to round off elevation to 4000ft. 63 mins 15s for my first real & complete effort. Know I can ride it harder, quite tempted to do the next attempt as a long FTP test. Had some wicked fun on the descent racing a couple of guys.

Good time, not far off mine! :o

Not with Strava.

Maybe, but it's also used widely for the various crankset & cassette combinations.

Also quite useful to make things 'easier' when low on fitness, climbing and wanting more gears! (like me at the moment, I'm on 40%, but did find I had enough gears to sit and spin every part of the Alpe on my Flux) ;)

CVR 2018 Round 2 kicks off later @7.05pm. I'm in zone E bracket C again with the WBR Dream Team!

Quite excited to get back into some regular racing, I've had good intentions but far too many distractions lately. My waistline and fitness are showing the evidence! :)
