*** The iPhone 3G S Thread - All iPhone 3G S Related Stuff In Here ***

The tethering option is the same price as the USB dongle for mobile broadband, so it is not as if unexpected. However I upgraded to the iPhone last August/September so not eligible. So I think my next upgrade time should coincide not much before the next iPhone launch.

In future will take the 2 year contract then just swap iPhones every 2 years when there should be a worthwhile difference.

Also will work out cheaper for me in the long run as not paying for a new phone every year so o2 will actually get let money out of me and subsidize the iphone I do buy even more. Will only be handing over £90 for a new iPhone every 2 years instead of every year.

If I take the 18 month then I am still going to pay for the next few months till the next iPhone launch so might as well just sign up to the 2 years and get the phone cheaper as would be paying for extra months anyway.

Well, i weakened and bought a 16GB White 3G to put onto Simplicity.

I dont have my simplicity card yet, but i do have the PAYG card (with £10) and the SIM that was in the iphone box.

Whats the best thing to do next? Which SIM should i use, and will i be ok registering the phone with either, then swapping to simplicity later?

TIA

Just tried to pre-order on PAYG but they wouldn't let me :/

GOt through the whole process and bam - stopped.

Their website allows pre-ordering on iPhone 3G S⃣ contract (clicky) and "coming soon" for PAYGO iPhone 3G S⃣ (clicky).

For those of us that are selling/recycling/whatever'ing our iPhone 3G to fund the 3G S⃣, the best price I've found is £210 from mopay.co.uk..... anyone found any better without selling it to a Zimbabwean Prince on eGay? (Yes I know we could get £320 there but there's sooooo many scammers too!)

It will be interesting to see what they do over here in Denmark. I'd love to upgrade from my 3G, my 6 month contract expired many months ago and my phone bill is usually around £200 a month when converted to UKP, but speaking to some friends here they say that because of the short contracts here you cant really barter with your provider, no matter how much you spend as a customer. At best I expect i'll only be able to buy a new phone outright on my current plan. I'm a brit abroad so dont really know the score...

Matt.

I'd order now but for some reason with massive demand I don't think I'd receive it on the 19th. I might take the risk on go down to the store on release day (although again - bit of a risk there with queues as well).

Also I don't have my PAC code yet either, ordered yesterday, so not sure if, when I receive it I'll be able to still port.

What an utter bunch of cretins there are on that O2 forum an Twitter; they seem to think that they are somehow entitled to break the contract that they agreed to. Also, they knew full well that the phone would likely be updated in 12 months, yet they sign an 18 month contract and then complain about it. Idiots.

disclaimer: I have an iPhone (9 months left on contract) and have no intention of buying out my contract, nor do I think I should get any discount from O2 because it is an iPhone!

Well I phoned Carphone Warehouse and they assured me the phone would be there on the 19th...... I won't hold my breath, plus I can port my number over on arrival. So, because I couldn't wait, I went ahead and ordered the 16GB 3Gs on an 18month £35pm contract.

Biggest surprise though is that their insurance is £13.99pm (not the 11:99 advertised on the web which I queried them about)

You aren't tied into a contract with it at least and the 1st month is free, so i've ordered it and will look around for different insurance in the meantime.... what other options do I have?

Yeah, but the more people fussing the higher the chance of O2 doing something about it!

And in return get me a cheaper upgrade! :p

I'd be VERY surprised if O2 cave in:

1) These people are under contract
2) O2 have iPhone exclusivity for the foreseeable future.

If people say "I'll never take out another O2 contract again" and the exclusivity remains, they probably will take out another contract to get the iPhone 3G S2 or whatever they call it.

My contract expires in Jan 2010 so I'll wait until the next phone arrives in June I guess. Not too bothered as iphone games are generally crap, so the 3GS to me is useless in that regard, I don't need a sodding compass, I DO need the speed but can easily live with the 3G atm, and I wouldn't mind the better camera.

My 3G is JB'd so does a lot more than a stock 3G jobby anyway. Looking forward to OS3.0 next week.

They won't do it. They'd lose out.

Figure an iPhone was worth £300 and was taken out for free 12 months ago (on an 18 month contract) at £45 a month. O2 have recouped £540 (12 x 45) and only received £240 (540 - 300) for the service they as an operator have provided for 12 months of the 18 month contract.

If they then let the customer cancel that contract and start out a brand new one, they have effectively lost 6 x 45 = £270.

That's what these muppets on Twitter do not seem to understand, and O2 are actually being fairly reasonable in letting people "buy out" their contract. If I were running O2, in this example, I would charge at least £300 to buy out the contract.

Anyhow, I don't see why anyone would want to buy out their contract to get the new one. It's hardly a giant leap forward. Of course, O2 could solve this whole thing and offer 1 year contracts on the iPhone with higher handset/tariff prices.
