That article says when it's released in the states, it'll be on a 2-year contract.

How does that work if they release another version next year? Or do you think it's unlikely?

It works the same as when the original came out (which was on 2 year contract) with the 3G following a year later. There will be a lot of people out there whose 2 year contracts will be coming to an end and they'll be after changing their original iPhone to something new. Apple need to make sure they catch these customers for another 2 years!

The 2 year contract is retarded. On O2 you save a fair bit just by selecting the 18 month contract and paying more up front for the iPhone. I can see people being stupid and selecting the 2 year one though.

There is very likely to be a 12 month interval between iPhone Hardware releases and when they release new iPhones what O2 have done is say you terminate the existing contract and sign up for a new contract.

I bought the original iPhone in the October, then the following September I upgraded to the iPhone 3G. My original 18 month contract was terminated and I started a new 18 month contract.

It is very likely that when the new iPhone launches later this year that I will upgrade and replace my 3G.

If I can get the phone cheaper with a 2 year contract when the phone will be replaced before the end of the contract and a new contract started I will take the 2 years and save the money as I am likely to upgrade the iPhone to the Mk4 before the 18 months have elapsed let alone 2 years.

You have to remember though the way the iPhone2G was subsided was different to the iPhone3G where the 2G you pretty much bought it outright and then was forced to connect it to the preferred network as a seperate stage; while the iPhone3G followed the much more normal phone path where it was heavily subsided and had to be bought within a network plan at the same time.

I wouldnt be surprised that the ability to upgrade from 3G to the new phone differs to what happened to 2G to 3G and follows the normal network upgrade path (i.e. dependent how long you are in the contract depends upon if you can upgrade and the cost of it above and beyond upgrading out of contract)...

Theres very little reason to allow you to terminate your existing contract since it is the reason you recieved a subsided iPhone3G...

ps3ud0

I am really thinking about getting the new iPhone. I currently have a iPod Touch can I transfer my applications from it to the iPhone?

Can't wait for this.

I shall be one of the sad barstewards queing this time round :DD

Shame my 3 month old 2G has been scratched/dented :( but hey still worth abit :D

If the phone form factor itself is identical and the only upgrade is cpu/ram i'de try and get one. The amount of time between closing and opening apps currently drives me nutty. Especially if i've gotten a postcode off the web and i'm trying to open Maps to put it in.. That always seems to take just long enough for someone to interupt me and forget the damn thing. And notes takes too long to become usable too. If the cpu/ram upgrade makes these things closer to instantaneous (And faster webpage rendering etc) that'll do me fine.

Yeah if there's just a CPU and RAM upgrade then I'll probably still get one too; however I'll still feel disappointed that they havent upgraded the tech to today's standards. Also personally I would love OLED. They definitely need to upgrade the camera and also a light would be great. I'm cynical about them putting a light on it but the updated camera must be a certainty.

My partners iPod touch has a faster processor than the iphone and I can tell the difference - quite a bit of difference :D
