*** The iPhone 3G S Thread - All iPhone 3G S Related Stuff In Here ***

Well loving the iPhone so far its great ! (3GS that is)

All my music on 15Gb's :D works in my car a treat via AUX plug.

Loving 3G, being able to get on the app store or youtube from anywhere is great.

I do have 2 questions, what case/skin would u lot recommend ?

Also i have a Bose® SoundDock® Original Music System Black, on the BOSE box it says it works with the iPhone.

When i dock the iPhone to the BOSE it says has to be run in aeroplane mode to work ?? i can listen to music but its not on the network. Anyway around this or do i just need a new dock ?
It appears to charge the iPhone from the BOSE dock, just has to be in aeroplane mode ?? i was told my dock was the newer version, running USB or firewire or the other way around ? make any sense to anyone ??

Thanks Ben

It may only be compatible with the first generation iPhone :(

The iPhone compatibility issue is related to any potential interference with the dock's speakers caused by the iPhone.

As for case/skin recommendations, I've previously used cases by Incase which I thought were pretty good :)

Can you just confirm, if you know, whether I need to activate the phone using the PAYG Iphone sim or not. If I do activate with PAYG, can I simply pop the Simplicity SIM in afterwards. ALso If I do go PAYG first, do you know if I can retain the unlimited wifi when on simplicity.

Cheers

You can just put the simplicity sim in and activate from there. I bought my 3GS online via the Apple store and did exactly that with no issues. I think its only the shops that insist on you topping up £10.

From what I understand if you go PAYG first you do not keep the unlimited wifi on simplicity. You could have course keep the PAYG sim handy and swap it over should you need to access Cloud/Openzone for any reason.

Thanks. That is the definitive answer I have been looking for.

So what package have you got with Voda (calls/texts/data)?
500 min with stop the clock (still hanging in there!)/250 texts(?)/£5 per month bundle (500MB fair usage). Not great on the data, but it's been fine so far (including a month when I lost my home broadband, so had to use it to connect to my work VPN...).

Also, presuming you bought a PAYG iPhone, how are you getting the Voda SIM to work in it. Don't answer this if it involves discussing things which are banned on here, just wondered if there was a "legitimate" way of doing it :)
The way I did it is easy, but sadly not possible to discuss on the forum! "Legitimate" ways include buying from a country where the phones are SIM unlocked (some of Europe, I believe, and possibly getting it from Australia (if Vodafone Aus is the same as Voda UK in terms of sim locks), and...actually, that's probably about it. :)

Hi again

Do you know if I will have any problems transferring my number to the 02 Simplicity? I have my PAC code, but the form for transferring numbers on their website asks if you have an iphone. If I say yes to this, will this cuase an issue as it is not an Iphone tarriff?

Thanks again

I'm going to order a payg 16GB 3GS tomorrow and also the 02 Simplicity 12 month deal, was planning to get one on fleebay but the prices they are going for, it would be better one on carphonewarehouse. still no decided on the black or white.

also does the gps navigation work while in a car (like a tomtom)?

What are the numbers on that - how much are you saving versus going with contract?

Is the loss of Visual Voicemail the only disadvantage compared to contract?

I'm new to the Iphone and O2 tariffs so please correct me if I'm wrong but from what I figured..

Pay As You Go
Payg Iphone 16GB = £440.40
02 Simplicity 12 Month - 800 UK minutes and 1600 UK texts with Unlimited Web Bolt On = £234.96 Less £100 Quidco Cashback = £134.96 Total payment for 12 months
TOTAL: £575.36

18 Contract
16GB Iphone = £184.98
18 Month x 600 UK mins 500 UK texts @ 34.26 per month
Total £801.66

If you just calculate the first 12 months on the contract deal then it would be

£411.12 for 12 (out of the 18) months plus the Iphone = £596.10

I'm relying on the Quidco cash back to get this deal but the payg would be £20.74 cheaper with 200 extra talk mins 1100 extra text per month and I would not be stuck for another 6 months in a contract.

Downside is liek you said no Visual voicemail and also you can only select one out of the 2 "unlimited Wi-Fi" or "Unlimited Web Bolt On" (using 3G/GPRS etc) if you want both then you need to pay an extra £7.34.

EDIT: if you get the payg Iphone from Apple Online you get 3% cashback so another £13 saving.

What's the best way to get this? £34.26 Contract for 24 month plus £87 or whatever or PAYG and £20 a month contract...?

When is the iPhone 4G/3G SS coming out? Also, 16GB or 32GB?

iPhone 4G?3G SS? Steady on the 3GS only came out last month. :p

It was a year between the 3G and the 3GS so can probably expect a similar wait.

Hmm. Probably best to go for an 18 month contract then? I prefer the look of the white one. I want to put my music on it, which would take up 8~GB so would 16GB be enough for apps and whatnot?

I would buy it outright and get a Simplicity £20 a month contract, but I can't imagine I'd get much money for it in 12 months when the new one comes out... ?

Hmm, anyone having a problem with keeping the 3GS alive? As in mine randomly switches off, last night it switched off with 74% battery, my alarm didn't go off in the morning, pressed the on button and held it, apple logo....Its done this several times now, once or twice in the middle of a phone call!! Not very nice, I suspect its a duff phone and need a new one.

Think I'm gonna buy the 16GB White model outright with the Simplicity £20 a month contract with Web bolt on. What's the fair usage policy on that? Is it 1GB a month like with other networks?

Then I can sell it and get back some of the £440.40 to use when the next one comes out in a year. 16GB is plenty for my music and whatever else too.

Which route did you guys go with to get your iPhones? I think it's best to buy outright rather than being stuck with an 18 month contract that ends up working out more expensive anyway...

£35 /m, 24 monther with 16Gb 3GS (White)

Simple really, rather than spend out £450 odd I'd rather just get the phone for cheaper now as looking at the cost over 2 years versus splashing out almost £500 after the first month seems like madness, I'd rather end up paying more each month while getting the phone for cheaper as the 24 month O2 contract is cheaper than Simplicity (slightly) anyway (if you keep it for that amount). I don't intend on swaying from iPhones anytime soon so I can easily see myself keeping this phone for that amount of time.

If the next version of the phone brings some good features to the table I'll just buy one and shift the 3GS, although they'd have to be some really decent features in order for me to do that...

It's all about if you can see yourself keeping the phone for that amount of time, I didn't want to spend almost £500 straight away, the fact Simplicity can be cancelled whenever is a nice perk but I don't see how it would be useful for me at least.

I would buy it outright and get a Simplicity £20 a month contract, but I can't imagine I'd get much money for it in 12 months when the new one comes out... ?

I think the 3G sells for £200+ at the moment second hand.
