*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Hmmmmmm Really tempted to stay with my edge iPhone now.

A cousin just came over and asked me to set his new 3G iPhone up and whilst it was very nice the only real thing that was amazing me was the firmware 2.0.

I thought my one had a much nicer, higher quality feel to it with the aluminium back. I also didn't like the width of the new one with the 1mm+ borders on the sides.

I would have to do so much to get the new iPhone, faff about trying to find a 16GB one, get a new dock for my iPhone Bluetooth headset, faff about unlocking my old one which im not greatly keen on, selling to a mate for £160 with a nice kick in the balls.

Just tempted to keep mine and update to 2.0

I must admit this idea is tempting me too.

I realise the iPhone 3G has some good improvements, and it will be hacked soon - but basically at the moment I'm faced with a choice of paying out £151 to end my contract (already paid, but its a credit on my account at the moment), £159 for the new 16GB and then £35 a month on a renewed 18 month contract with O2...

Or.... buy the v1 iPhone for ~£200, pop in my Vodafone SIM and carry on with the 9 remaining months I have and see what v3 iPhone brings. Vodafone are making me silly offers on tariffs at the moment to keep me, although they have this evening given me my PAC code over the phone so I am free to get an iPhone 3G tomorrow if I wanted to.

The other factor playing on my mind is that I have hardly any 3G coverage where I live, I can count on one hand the number of times I've used the 3G connection on my N95, and similarly the novelty of GPS wears off quickly as I have a top-end TomTom anyway.

I kinda hate myself for considering the v1 iPhone because I convinced myself it was technologically inferior, but in reality all things considered as I have a work phone for business all I tend to use my personal phone for is texting, calling and the Internet.

Would be keen to hear some thoughts on what people would do in my shoes...

Good post! Helped me out! :p Really gonna consider keeping mine now and save the hassle, it was a hassle with O2 last time i dealt with them and i really can't be rarsed to go through it again.

The only real things i was pleased and really intriqued with on the new one was the software over the hardware.

IMO the old one is nicer to hold. I don't really like the plastic back, feels cheap. Personally, if i was in your shoes, save your money and go for the old iPhone, it'll save you paying off your old contract and it'll save having to deal with O2 :p

I have thought about it some more and i'm in the process of updating to 2.0 now! :p

I don't need the new one. I still love mine to bits!

I have till october to upgrade so i'm in no rush.

Definitely worth sticking with the v1 in your shoes, unless you have a newfound need for 3G/GPS (which I suppose is unlikely if you've lived with the iPhone for as long as you have).

Edge is fast enough for me, i only really use email and use safari when i am waiting for something at uni, poor 3G/Edge reception down here aswell.

I have a Tom Tom aswell so all is good! :p

V1 is a great unit and the location stuff will work ok with the V1 using the old phone mast technique. Not as accurate but will know the general location you're in so probably fine for most people. The accurate GPS stuff is nice but in reality probably not used a huge amount by a lot of people although I do love it personally.

I would go for the 3G but only because I'm a sucker for the latest tech, if I wasnt such a sucker then the V1 is the smart buy at the moment I think.

EDIT: the GPS on the 3G compliments the TomTom. The iPhone doesn't (currently) do car navigation but it does do what the TomTom doesn't which is the finding places. For example you're in a town and fancy a pint. You tap in PUB and hit find, it will show you all the nearest pubs then you can just click navigate to and it will show you how to get to that pub on foot. Same for cinemas, type in cinema and tap enter then click on the cinemas it has pinned to go to their websites to see what films are playing and at what times, It's very good at that kind of stuff and very quick which actually makes it very useful.

Well, it was a smart buy back when it was £169 in the shops - now the auction house of woe is my only option, with appropriate markups. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say :(

You can do that on the old one. You just need to know where you are, and most likely, you will...:p

Not so much how to get to it though but it will pin what places there are.

The 2.0 firmware is both the greatest and worst thing of the new iPhone.

The functionality it adds is good, but it just feels under-polished and buggy. I feel Apple should have released with a lesser build to get production numbers up, then worked on ironing out a few more bugs, and released a 2.0.1 update after the launch of the 3G :(

Having had both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone v1 running along aside each other, I have decided to stick with v1. The additional features that the iPhone 3G appeal to me, but I still prefer my v1. If the GPS package was a total solution, I might have considered it, but running 2.0 on both phones, I really can't see much difference. So anybody that can't decide which one to get - my bit of advice is go for v1! ;)

I upgraded simply for the 3G. It's so much quicker. It's faster than the cloud wifi !

Here's one for you. Can I put my iPhone sim into my other O2 Phone? My n95 would allow me to tether to my laptop, but the iPhone sim would have unlimited internet usage!

Bah you're confusing me now :p

Dont know whether to upgrade or not as people are saying its troublesome :/
