*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

considering the size of the file, it was really quick to install. Everything on the list of fixes seems to work spot on now. Great to have a useable iPhone again. The texting lag was really begining to pee me off.

Does it wipe your iphone? I am in work and would like to update it here, but don't want to lose everything for the sake of waiting a couple of hours.

The firmwae update dont wipe your phone, but obviously if you sync it after it will if your not on the same machine. TBH theres nothing that cant wait a few hours anyway :P

Edit: Instead of getting 4/5 bars i now get 5/5 and the 3G icon has changed!

Edit2: Im interested in what you guys are getting in central London as i couldn't get 3G there in the past.

- decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
- significantly improve battery life for most users
- dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
- improve email reliability, notable fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
- faster installation of 3rd party applications
- fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
- improved performance of text messaging
- faster loading and searching of contacts
- improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
- repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
- option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
- Genius playlist creation

* General concensus is that signal strength has improved a great deal. Although that in itself could be an illusion.

* There is now a new 3G/EDGE icon (gee wow)
* Contact and SMS lag have apparently vanished - it always does on a fresh firmware install though, then returns later...
* No idea about the email reliability just yet but given that this is one of my main complaints I'll no doubt notice it next week.
* Backup time has been reduced.

Not noticed anything else tbh. The phone doesn't feel anymore snappier than before.

Mine's "upgrading" now. But all it has been doing is backing up for two and half hours (9Gb music, three pages of apps totalling 700 odd Mb). And you can't skip this backup.

It's gone to the top of the progress bar and will now probably sit there for another hour. All for a flippin backup! And as I sync to my work PC I'm going to have to sit here and wait for it. Why oh why did I bother to try on a Friday evening??!?!?!

Does anyone know where iTunes actually backs up to as I'd be interested to know how much it's backing up (last time I restored it -4 hours- it left me with virtually nothing- no music and most of my apps gone)

My backup took about 25-30 minutes to do and that is 12GB of music, 1.3GB of video and 400MB of 'other'

I assume it doesn't back up all your music and stuff, but is more just your contacts and settings.

o2 have a fair usage policy that runs on all there phones, contract or P&G but for the iPhone this was waved although with iPhone P&G it may be reinstated, thats something youll have to look into.
I half expect as much.

Unlimited*

*Ha ha, we don't know how it's even legal to use this term, seeing as the reality is the exact opposite of its meaning, i.e. there are very real limits. Also, these limits vary depending on context, customer and service. Telefónica O2 UK Limited

I DROPPED IT!

I did... i couldnt believe it!! Heard a thud on the concrete!!!

No major damage, slight scraping on 3 corners is about all the damage done luckily enough!

Wernt happy to say the least.

I know there's no software unlock for the iphone 3g but has anyone any experience with those sim-adaptor thingies that are supposed to open them to other networks? (by fooling the phone into thinking it's an o2 sim?)
