*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

am i right in thinking for those of us who pre ordered from CW and selected in store collection, the phones will basically be reserved for us to pick up any time during friday?

I think I'm going to hope that iPhone 1 to iPhone 3G upgrades can be done in store and try to get to my local O2 store for 08:00 on Friday.

That's what I've been told but I can't see it happening one bit. The whole availability of the phone is a total shambles right from the outset. Its like 2005 again with the lack of 360's.

Taken from TrustedReviews:

Following the pre-order carnage that greeted customers on Tuesday, a letter by O2 Sales Director Stephen Shurrock to an angry customer has (presumably without his knowledge) been posted to the MacRumours forum and it's rather enlightening.

In it he admits "At O2 we had said that we would keep all those who had registered their interest in Apple iPhone 3G up to date with the launch developments. We also used the registration data to keep Apple up to date on the phenomenal interest and to support our orders for the phones with them. We have been working continuously with them to get as much stock for the UK as possible. Unfortunately, they have only been able to supply a small proportion of the number of phones we asked for, because they are launching simultaneously in 22 countries. We are confident that over time we will start to get sufficient volume to meet demand, but it is likely that stock will be in very short supply for some weeks to come."

Interestingly, Shurrock also claims "We opened the online shop yesterday [and] had over 200,000 people expressing interest and only a very small proportion of that number of devices available. Faced with this dilemma, we made it clear in the communications that to be fair to all customers the orders would be managed on a first come first served basis, as stock was limited. The response was so great that the online store completely sold out of iPhones within just a few hours... The massive simultaneous crush, partly created by our open and honest communications approach with the registered community, exceeded even our worst case assumptions. Demand was at 13,000 orders per second. Frankly, we have to admit we just weren't prepared for this unprecedented level of demand. No website is."

As for launch day: "The next opportunity to get an iPhone will be when the device goes on sale in the high street on 11th July. O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores will be taking new orders and upgrade orders. Apple stores will only be taking new customer contracts. Most shops will open at 8.02am but some stores, particularly in shopping centres where early access is not possible, will open as usual from 9am. The approach on Friday will also be on a first come first served basis. The amount of devices will vary depending on the store but will be on average a few dozen iPhones in each O2 or CPW store. We are expecting early queues and, like the online site, are expecting to sell out very quickly. Apple stores will have more devices. We will be receiving deliveries from Apple roughly once a week for the foreseeable future but it will be several weeks before stocks increase. We will release stock updates for the online shop as they become available."

Apple iPhone Software 2.0 Upgrade Experience Preview

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/iphone2_upgrade_preview.asp

Wondering what the experience is going to be like next week when Apple makes its long-awaited iPhone Software 2.0 (see my preview) available? Well, wonder no more: I've gotten my hands on near-final versions of iPhone Software 2.0 and the Windows and PC versions of iTunes 7.7, and can show you the install experience as well as some of the MobileMe and Microsoft Exchange integration pieces. Let's jump right in.

Note: This is a first look only and should not be construed as a review of any kind. I will be reviewing iPhone Software 2.0, the iPhone 3G, and Apple MobileMe separately in the weeks ahead.

Is the upgrade option still going to be available after this whole faff has calmed down? I really can't be asked to go into the O2 shop.

Hopefully on the 10th or 11th i'll be able to order from their website.

I believe you have the option to upgrade from July 11th through until October the 11th this year.

Finally, a response from O2:

Hello Dan,

Thanks for emailing us to find out the status of your order for the iPhone 3G.

I can see that your order (xx-xxxxxxxxx) for the 16Gb iPhone 3G was successfully placed. At the moments we're processing orders on first come first served basis. We'll deliver as many orders as possible on 11 July 2008 and then delivery may take up to two weeks. We'll send you a text message the day before the delivery to confirm that your order is on the way.

So they are saying if you're lucky it will arrive on the 11th, if not, it will take up to two weeks for more stock arrive and for it to be delivered.

Looks in even more doubt that deliverly on the 11th will happen then. I suppose we will find out tomorrow!

I got no confirmation of order sadly. Had to email support to find out if the order was successful.

well i think we better get there early then, would be a bummer to go there and find out they sold your phone to another person considering money has been taken already!

Hmm I don't have a phone at the moment, I ended my t-mobile contract to get the iPhone, so I won't be getting no text? How will I know if my order has been sent? I assume the Track my Order will update to "Complete" right?
