*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

As i've said a billion times, MMS is needed for quite a lot of people. It's not down to how easy it is to email pics from the iPhone, it's down to the fact that the majority of people don't check their email on the move. If you want to get a picture to someone who's out and about, MMS is still the best way.

It has a crappy camera by all accounts so getting pictures into it will be from the net so you may as well email it as its already on the net!

MMS is overrated if you have unlimited data transfer.

The camera is fine for quick snaps if the light is good, I use MMS all the time to send snaps to people.. email just doesn't cut it unless everyone you know is a geek who checks their mail every few minutes.

YOU might have unlimited data and a fancy pants email phone, but the vast majority of people don't. There's far more people recieving MMS than email while they are on the move.

We're starting to see more and more 'smart phones' on the market and as a result email will start to become dominate, even a lot of the more of the basic phones e.g SE K810i has push email on it. I do agree that more people are using MMS than email but I think it is only a matter of time before the balance shifts the other way. :)

Yes its a flaw for the Iphone to not have MMS but I don't consider it to be as big a flaw as people make it out to be.

In my opinion, if you think that MMS isn't a large ommission due to email then you are thinking of it from a geek point of view. The vast majority of my friends don't check their email on their phones because they don't want to, it's nothing to do with the capability of the handsets. Most people don't want to be bombarded by emails while they are out and about, or pay for data, and i'm sure people give their email addresses out much more freely than mobile numbers.

If you consider the argument for no MMS then you may as well ditch SMS too, and just email people. No need for a text package then if you have unlimited data. If you wanted to be completely ridiculous you could ditch your call package and just use VoIP over 3g, no need for a call package either then.

I do love my iPhone, but I don't think it's really for the average schmo with the missing features. In fact I know 2 people that bought them "properly", without any jailbreaking, and they both hate them because they don't do stuff they consider phones should be able to do.

1) Some people like MMS, some people don't. Personally, I don't use it as I find it unreliable and expensive, when I could wait, upload the photo on the Mac and then send it. Although long winded. It's free. Plus I don't have MMS in my contract.

2) MMS isn't that big in the states. And the iPhone never really had it, imo for that reason.

3) I'm sure there is an ulterior motive, Apple want to push for email based data transfer to strengthen the email client on the phone. Furthermore, with the creation of MobileMe, they are not likely to create MMS.

Who's going to bet that Apple will release MMS in the App Store and charge $10 for it ?

It wouldn't surprise me one bit, the hardware can already do it, it just needs the program.

I use MMS a fair bit with my friends... my O2 contract allows me to send them as part of my plan... 1x MMS = 4x SMS from my total... and considering I have 1000 a month I can use it as I please. And when you have girlies on the go (I realise this may not apply to many in this thread) then MMS becomes a very nice and cheeky way of getting you through an otherwise dull day. ;)

MMS is good, and has been stated several times over... the majority of people don't check emails on the move, it's pretty much a geek thing.

So we are all ugly. That's why we don't use it? MMS is for the cool kids.

And email is for geeks. Right.

I agree with the points you make, I myself personally do not use MMS but I do know people who us it regularly. I just think when you look at the omission of MMS and then look at what you get from tariff wise with the phone (e.g. limited SMS but unlimited data) It seems like the packages are built around trying to get you to use the most out of the facilities on the phone.

I wouldn't say my view is on of a geek per se, I just understand how simple it is to set-up and use an email client, due to my line of work, as I'm sure a vast majority who buy the phone will also do.

I'd also go out on a limb and say the people that buy the phone and are disappointed with what it cannot do are more than likely to of bought in to it for the whole 'I have an Iphone image' and not done any real homework on the handset it's self.

It still is a silly mistake on there part (Apple's) seeing as I'd imagine they will want as broad a market share as possible but the lack of MMS will cost it sales. :)

I pretty much agree with you, the average schmos I know that bought them bought them because they were cool. These are the type of people that Apple needs to woo if they are going to significantly grab market share (and by market share I mean mobile phone market share, not the "multimedia smart phone that has a fruit logo on it" market share that the headline stats use ;))

It is very easy to setup an email account, and connect it to the phone, just as it is with most modern phones. Unfortunately this doesn't get round the fact that people a) don't want to, and b) say "why should i"? Anything that is deemed "standard" functionality that requires any effort on the users part is always going to be detrimental :)

And to some others.. checking your email on your phone is geeky.. get over it ;)

I've never tried sending on my Iphone but I think they trying to push people to do stuff more via email over mms most likely due to the web based nature of the phone. It receives pictures rather well via email imo.

That's my view on it anyway :)
Therein lies the problem, Apple seem to be arrogant enough to think that they can change the way everyone has done sending pictures & media to eachother. MMS works and works well, it's universally supported - you don't have to hope that your recipient picks up their email on their phone (and picks it up consistently enough that your message is seen soon after you send it).

The people who advocate email with attachments as being a competent alternative to MMS are quite simply wearing rose-tinted specs. If you're going to argue this point you might as well make the same point about SMS - if people can read emails on their phone whats the point of limited 160-character messages & additional costs? Let's all use email huzzah!

MMS, like SMS, is intended to be a service wherein your recipient sees your message on their phone immediately (or very soon after) you've sent it. It's retarded to pretend like email on phones is an acceptable alternative to tried, proven and established standards like SMS and MMS.

Many people on here might use email rather than MMS, but the very fact we know about this forum and post on it means we're not the average user.

I'm guessing most people use MMS quite a lot over email. Yes, email is much better to use, but I still would like MMS on my iPhone. And I could never get Swirly to work properly. And if they did charge $10 for a good MMS app I'd get it in a heartbeat.
