*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

For a 3G unlock to be useful, there would have to be a way to acquire a 3G model without first being forced to sign a contract, right? Has/will that happen?

Yeah, O2 do plan on realeasing a PAYG version somtime later this year which wouldn't require a contract. However it will cost a lot more than the contract one. It's costs enough more so that if you were to buy one and then put it on something like O2 Simplicity £25/month it wouldn't work out any cheaper than the contract version.

Anyone else switched 3g off on their iPhone through lack of quality signal?

I've done so as at home i'm only getting mostly 1-2 bar if i'm lucky, whereas if i switch to edge i get full signal. Preston Lancashire is a good area for 3g, or at least it was when i had other 3g Sony Ericsson phones. 3g on my iPhone isn't good, i hope to god there will be a firmware update to rectify this problem.

What problem?

My 3g signal is usually one bar, but since the QoS is rated higher I still get perfect quality calls and much quicker d/l than on Edge. If the signal drops completely then I switch over to Edge automatically.

Yes, coverage could be better, but I don't see the point in turning it off.

A couple of daft questions. :o

How do I switch to Edge ? I don't seem to be able to see a setting for it.

If I send / receive emails, browse the net, using Edge GPRS are these all covered under the unlimited data part?

Switch of 3G to use EDGE or GPRS depending what is available.

Yep, they're all unlimited.

Thanks. I have had the 3G switched off, because I wasn't too sure. But I haven't seen a little blue box either. Could this be because they haven't ported my account across yet?
I am using my old SIM and got a text this morning saying they will be porting me across on the 23rd.

Reading back through the thread, I don't understand why people are having issues going from O2 - O2. I phoned CPW on Friday and asked to upgrade and had no problems. I was previously on O2 with them, though my contract ends around about now.

Just set-up the free trial with Izymail (Despite being a little weary about giving someone else my email+password) and now have my Hotmail working with the Mail.app. Marvellous! Now i just have to press once to see my mail, not 40 blinkin times!

hmmmm pretty...

I just got a call from my local O2 shop telling me they had 16Gb black's in. So I just popped in and picked myself one up! :) Activated and on 3g right now without any delay. All good so far.
