*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Well i got my 16GB white iPhone today, got two questions:

1) When i download a free App via iTunes and try syncing, the App won't carry over to the iPhone. I did once get a message saying something along the lines of i don't have permission to add Apps to the iPhone. If i download them directly using the App Store on the iPhone they work fine, which seems weird?

2) When i use the "locate me" button with Maps it turns to a blue spinning circle and just stays spinning until 5 minutes or so later when i give up and click it off. I am kind of in the middle of nowhere but expected it to just say something like "cannot locate" etc?

I had a quick search for these issues as i think i remember seeing the second one somewhere, but couldn't find anything.

My 8Gb iPhone 3G should be waiting for me at home this time tomorrow. :D

I have spent hours mulling over what case to get it, I decided that I didnt want to wack it in a great big plastic case so opted for a Zagg invisible shield which turned up today. Just how fiddly are these things to put on? Im usually useless with these sorts of things and end up making a mess. Will give it a try though. Seem to read mix reviews everywhere I look.

They ARE fiddly but worth it - just remember to lubricate it plenty and it will slide into place effortlessly. Squeegee out the excess. IMHO, the answer is fingers/hands/shield all VERY wet. I am a total clutz and managed not too bad. Don't be upset if it isn't perfect right away as it seems to dry "better" if you know what I mean.Bit like wallpapering.

Yep, apply loadsa spray on both the shield and your fingers. I just removed my Touch's existing shield, which was peeling off after a solid year+ and applied a new one. Took about 30mins or so.

Remember any small bubbles will eventually vanish anyway so don't worry about those too much. Still awaiting delivery of the IS for my iPhone.

Well i sorted the first one, turns out you have to double click the App and enter your iTunes password to "authorize" it for use. Fair play.

Anyone got any ideas about my second issue?

I have a plan.

I am not buying a mac pro now, instead i am getting a Quad core Pc.

The reason? Cash. I can buy so much so for the price of one mac pro(no screen) I plan to buy one when i go to university. It is to much cash for me to spend now, and a risk with Nehalem on the horizon. Infact i can buy these for the price of one Mac Pro.
  • Pc + 24" Monitor
  • Amp and Speakers for Stereo Setup
  • iPhone(£159) and the Contract pay offs
  • iPod and iPhone docks
  • Trainers :)
  • Xbox Live 12 months
  • Rapidshare 12 months
  • And then only need £200 to get a £550 42"

When i looked at it like that , it clicked how much cash it actually was, and how much debt i would have had.

Anyway, now i have a lot of cash, the iPhone can be bought quicker. I have 3 months left of my contract, £105. So i am going to try and find someone who may be willing to use my current sim, at a cut price fee of course.

I am saving £25 on a CPU , saved a lot on HDD's etc , so all this is going to the iPhone fund now, it will be mine sooner rather than later :)

i got myself one of the plastic cases and i dont think it adds much bulk to it. (bit dusty at the moment)

Hmmmph, O2 haven't updated their availability this morning. I also hope they get lots of stock on friday like they said they would!

Just thought; I'll be in France/Switzerland/Italy over the next few weeks.

I remember reading rumours of iPhones being sold unlocked somewhere because of some law.

Anyone know if I can pick up an unlocked, no contract iPhone abroad?

Does anyone recall the apple keynote speech where Steve Jobs was showing the maps app on the iphone and it showed people with an iphone close to your location???

How do i get this working???

Belgium and France

[EDIT] yup

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/07/17/france_payg_iphone_3g/

"France's official iPhone carrier, Orange, is legally obliged to unlock the handset, according to French law. So far, however, it has not said how owners can get this done. It too is selling the iPhone with a PAYG SIM "sans engagement" (without contract) for €609, but a line on its website suggests you can buy the phone "alone" for €709 - that's presumably the unlock price."

And O2 have updated their list with LOTS more stock across the country. Hope my local stores don't get sold out before I have chance to get one after work!

Me.

I also get an issue with safari; if my connection drops whilst I'm browsing safari says it's not connected to the internet, even when the connection comes back. I actually have to restart the phone in order to get it to connect again.

Have you had any luck sorting it? At the moment i'm of the opinion that it's most likely not working too well because i'm in the middle of nowhere, so until i try it in a more populated area i won't worry too much...am just hoping theres nothing wrong hardware-wise (GPS etc)...as i had sent back my original iPhone for a Wifi hardware fault and have waited all this time to get the new revision with a pappy old Nokia!
