Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Heard this was the best of the lot, so gave it a go. I think it hit a lot of great notes in its weird mishmash of fantasy CRPG with futuristic elements and of course the turn-based combat.
The plot was surprisingly intriguing, largely because of the strange disparity of fantasy and sci-fi, I think. But also because it drip fed the mystery at a very satisfying rate, giving me motivation to do the next quest to find out more, which very few games manage for me. The writing and dialogue is very good, but I did think there was a little bit of conflict with the wordy, descriptive non-dialogue prose and the rest of the game's tone. But I cant fault the writing itself. Leagues better than the average game.
Presentation was hit and miss for me. I dont hate the art style, but I dont love it, either. Graphics are ok, nothing to write home about. It's all competent enough, I'd say. Just not a particular point worth bragging about, which is fine.
The game took me 30 hours to complete, which included just about all the sidequests(that I discovered at least). There weren't a ton of quests altogether, and each quest itself wasn't hugely involved for the most part, but I did enjoy the backstory and context of the missions. Things felt like you were doing something meaningful for the most part. I especially enjoyed the particularly teammate quests that unlock after a while.
Combat is what takes up the majority of the time in the game and really, it's basically Xcom-lite. Which isn't a bad thing at all, cuz while it doesn't have the depth that Xcom has, it does what it does well. So if you've played Xcom, you'll know exactly what to expect, except with magic and everything, too.
The game's length probably limits the amount of meaningful progression possible, so it was a bit barebones here, but it was serviceable and had enough to give you that carrot-on-the-stick 'hook' throughout.
Overall, I think the game is very good. I just cant help but think this style of game could do being bigger, longer and more in-depth. I know these are crowdfunded, so they can only work with so much budget, but the root concepts here are so good, that a game with 2-3x the amount of content, with more variety of levels and locations, longer and more complex missions, more in-depth combat along with a deeper progression system(balanced for the longer playtime) with more skills and whatnot, more enemy variety, etc etc - would make for a knockout game that could easily become an instant classic.
I'd give this game an 8.5/10. Definitely recommend it for RPG or turn-based combat fans. I just cant help thinking it could be so much more...
