Black Mesa 8/10

I waited for the Steam release of this.

I enjoyed this immensely largely due to the challenge it presented when compared to other modern shooters.

The environments were a little bland, the source material is very dated now.

Still, not often I will complete a game these days (yes I know Zen is still on it's way :P) and I enjoyed it so 8/10.

Dying light.

I really underestimated it and it was brilliant. It was spoilt by the shocking bad ending!!! IF you've finished it you should know what I mean.

Yeah I agree. It does not do anything really special, but it just feels like a solidly built game. It's just fun to run around, slicing off limbs and leaping from roof to roof, which is generally a good thing in my book. If a game can entertain me by letting me just mess around with the core mechanics, no missions goal, timers, etc. then it's a good sign.

I personally just wrapped up LA Noire, awesome "experience", not necessarily a great game mechanically and pacing sort of view. The game just oozes style. This 1940's LA is wonderfully constructed and I was genuinely surprised my the amount of interiors for an open world game. Sure there's practically nothing interesting to do in the open world unfortunately, but it looks great. It really helped with the immersion aspect which the game prides itself on. The sound track is stellar and feels like a perfect mix. The writing was a bit off at points, but the acting was pretty good for the most part and I was surprised to see so many people coming over from Mad Men (over 50! :D), perfect for a fan.

I have to praise the developers oh so much for managing to stick to their guns and not shy away from the more sensitive and adult content. At points I genuinely let out a sound of disgust 'cause of the content of some scenes. It really goes to show just how much integrity Rockstar has as a published/developer to allow these things pass in a high profile title.

I feel like the game started to drag towards the end and overall I feel like the whole plot came crumbling down because of the ending. the whole sequence felt so ham fisted with the flamethrower, it was all pretty pointless. The events leading up to it (apart from the majority of Arson, personally was not as invested as I would like to be compared to other cases) were pretty interesting.

I like how they portrayed Cole as a goody two shoe LAPD poster boy at the beginning part of the game, and we (the player) slowly got to experience his actually scummy nature. So much so that the game makes you switch character, felt really weird seeing that character you played as for so long become "one of the bad guys".

Anyway I'm rambling on but in generally the shooting mechanics and oddly placed set pieces were pretty poor also, but was understandable since they somehow needed to break up the generally repetitive flow going from one case to another. Also the graphics didn't look to great, and it's a shame that the whole facial capture thing won't age too well 'cause it looked great for it's time.

Probably a 7.5 or 8 for me (out of 10 of course.) It's more one of those "experience" games. This is gonna sound really lame but it just felt "cool" playing it, I feel like they nailed the 1940's LA aesthetic and really felt like I was playing through a period piece.

The Rise Of The Tomb Raider.

For the most part I really enjoyed it, collecting all the items in each area was particularly satisfying. As well as finding and solving all the hidden tombs. I'm not the best with a controller but the combat side of the game wasn't overly challenging for me until the near the end of the game. The last few level were the only negative really, they were just kill boxes really with too many enemies to kill and not a lot else.

I didn't really feel like the RPG elements of upgrading skills and abilities were really needed. Around half way through the game I wasn't even reading what each skill did, just added the next one on the list as skill points were earned. I did like some of the skills though, like booby trapping dead bodies to gas anyone who was nosing around.

The game looked decent enough in most places, but definitely some frame rate drops in a few areas and the game is very reliant on lighting effects to make it look it's best.

It's sort of become a hybrid of Tomb Raider, Batman, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed and a little bit of Skyrim. Not that that's a bad thing, but I enjoyed the game the most when searching for the hidden entrances of tombs and then solving them. More than anything else.

I completed 95% of the game so I found and did nearly everything the game had to offer. When you complete the story line you can go back through any level and complete it 100% if you wish. There are some areas you can't complete first time through until you've attained certain equipment, so you have no choice but to go back at a later time, if you want to get 100% in each area. There's plenty of fast travel camps throughout the game that reduces the tedium, but loading times are a touch long when using fast travel.

The story is pish.

All in all a game well worth playing, a few minor gripes aside.

8/10

Just realised this was PC section and I played the Xbox One version. So ignore comments regarding graphics.

Are there difficulty options?

Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast - 8.5/10

After the Nar Shaddaa streets the game is fantastic. While the rest of the game is not perfect by any means, the first few levels and the forced stealth section of the game easily knock a point off the overall due to frustration.

The first few levels where you only have blasters are annoying due to the terrible accuracy of the automatic weapons and the single shot weapons are too slow due to the usually high number of enemies. They're still fun, but after you get the lightsaber the game jumps up a notch in the fun department. The first level after receiving the lightsaber however involves stupidly accurate snipers, many of which are out of range for saber combat so you have to strafe in and out of cover hoping to hit them and one even hides in an almost pitch black area on the other side of the map that you can barely see when zoomed all the way in with a sniper.

The only other complaint I have is the forced stealth section which I'm sure you all know is terrible (are they ever good?).

Overall though a very fun experience and I'm now downloading the demo level just to get more Katarn :D.

Wolfenstein : The New Order.

+ great combat (probably the most enjoyable I've played since F.E.A.R.)
+ on the whole, the visuals / cut-scenes were pretty good (I thought the less well textured areas weren't as bad as RAGE)
+ a few surprise moments that I wasn't expecting :D

- I found the sound of BJ's voice when talking to himself more of a nuisance than anything else / couldn't always quite make out what he was saying
- can't remember his name, but the Scottish chap - whom I quite liked to start with, also became a pain in the neck as time went on
- QTEs! I wasn't always totally sure what I was supposed to be doing

Overall, a good game but not quite one I found to be worthy of greatness (8/10).

Fairy Fencer F. 7.5/10
A turn based Japanese RPG- but a breezy modern take on it.
Originally a PS3 game, and reflected in the textures but other than that it's a very good port that does 4k well.
The plot itself is Ok, and has an interesting take or two, but the story telling is poor, and unconvincingly portrayed by static chars in cut scenes, like a visual novel. However the characters themselves are a diverse and entertaining bunch and rescue it somewhat.
What makes the game though is its combat, truly a modern adaptation of turnbased combat that is both reassuringly traditional while also evolved some excitement, allowing you to move freely on the 3D battlefield, with position being pivotal for skill usage. Best of all is an animation auto-skip feature allowing you to zoom thru battles, negating the games grindy nature for the most part, and forever banishing prolonged animations that have previously plagued the genre - 2 minute knights of the round summon etc.

Overall its for genre fans only, and grim dark its not.

Just done this game also, I done the Fergus story, Game seemed rather short completed within 10 hours with some idle time on steam, I payed 4.99 for it which was well worth it however when it first came out no way would it be worth £39.99

According to steam, I took 18 hours. I'm not sure that's totally accurate, though. I think I paid around the same for it too; there's no way I'd buy it (or almost any other game for that matter) for day one release price. No need to these days anyway, what with key sites being rife. :)

Only game I have played that I bought so far from the Steam sale.

Loved it.

Very playable from the first moment and quite challenging. A great soundtrack to boot.

The controls were fantastic. I found it very difficult to put down this one until I completed.

Been smashing Far Cry 4 since finishing this one last week...

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Story only, so not 100%

7/10, it was good but seemed to drag on for me. Also it was derpy in some places which in the end caused me to fall to my death.
