The Last of Us (HBO, from Creator of Chernobyl) - No game spoilers please

I enjoyed it - glad they've kept to the source material. I do hope they'll advance the story a bit - as good as it was, I have seen this before....

Lol - but if they changed/added to the story, gamers would be complaining it isn't true to the game.

I read somewhere that Drukkman wouldn't do this and the next part would pick up from TLOU 2.

I know it's an impossible conundrum that they can't win wither way. I haven't played TLOU 2 and managed to avoid all the spoilers about it - so should enjoy when they move on to that part of the story more.

I really enjoyed it I think they've got the balance mostly right in terms of keeping true to the source material, providing lots of nice references for fans of the game to pick up on (e.g. specific lines of dialogue) whilst also expanding on things not seen in the game. Pedro seems like a good fit for Joel, I don't know if Bella would've been my first choice for Ellie (though I'm not sure who would be, maybe put Kaitlyn Dever in a time machine so she's the right age?) but she does seem to have some of the mannerisms and snappiness that Ellie has.

The only thing it really didn't need for me was:

The camera regularly focusing on Joel's watch to make a point that he's still wearing it, and the flashback to Sarah's death. Both felt far too on-the-nose for me.

First 20 minutes were really good for me, next 45 mins or so were quite slow, last 15 mins it picked up again. I'll stick with it for a bit, but if my wife decides it isn't for her I might end up not bothering. The time I have to watch series that only I like is quickly diminished in a week, so reserved for really good stuff that I love.

Enjoyed the show. I played the game years ago and it reminded me of it - seems to be sticking close to the game so far which is good...

Holy crap the first episode was really good. The most impactful thing for me was how absolutely amazing the actress (Nico Parker) who played Joels daughter was... if she had been cast as Elle I would have been super happy. She was by far the best actor in the episode and her story was really impactful. I hope she gets recognition for this and starts to get bigger roles in other series.

The actress who plays Elle (Bella Ramsey) is competent, but I definitely am not enamoured with her performance and as superficial as it sounds I don't think she looks the part either. As a young and brusque Lady Mormont she was great, but as an emotionally complex Elle I am not sold on her. At least not yet.

Pedro Pascal and Anna Torv are great as always. Torv really has a Kate Blanchett look about her but they really made her look gritty in this series.

However these are first-world complaints and overall I really enjoyed it. The first half an hour had me with my heart in my mouth, it was a really good depiction of the sudden onset of the infection and swift societal collapse. Looking forward to episode 2! :)

I honestly thought it was a great start. The beginning of the first game was one of the most emotional and heartbreaking scenes in any game i have played. Although it came close it wasnt as impactful for me but that was highly likely to the fact that i already knew what was coming and expected it.. Good tho. I can see Bella Ramsey growing into the role of Ellie, when she first me Joel in the first game she was pretty much the same. One thing though that i have found out, which i am a little disappointed by, is they have gotten rid of the fact that its not spore borne. there was a little scene when they went down into the tunnels that you saw dust particles in the air but that was it. I could see that a lot of scenes of that wouldn't transfer well to tv show but a couple of really tense, in the dark, only being able to see through a mask using hand gestures would have been great tv.

My first thought was "she looks and acts a bit like Thandie Newton"...then I looked her up and it's her mum

It was to do with the actors - they would have spent most of the time wearing masks ie not showing their faces. There was also the plot hole that spore infection wouldn't just remain in dank, enclosed places - it would be everywhere, so after a bit of research they went with tendrils.

Exactly, now we all experienced the pandemic, if we know these spores are airborne and masks prevents it then the entire show they would just wear it everywhere.

So you would have everyone on screen wearing masks, it would be illogical not to, considering what we just went through.

Yeah i get it (Although you do know the other show the main actor is on in regards to wearing a mask? ) i just thought those tendrils looked a bit crap really but understood the change just thought it took a little bit of the tension away from certain aspects that are in the game. There are a multitude of examples of things in tv shows that wouldnt actually work in the real world but it still gets put under our nose. They could have quite easily gone with the spore infection is only in the dark, dank enclosed spaces because UV light can sterilize the spores but once the spores infect someone then it can only be sterilized with a shotgun blast to the face or a shiv in the head. :D

Or stuff she wants to watch...

:D

:D
Indeed. I made my other half watch it and she fell asleep near the end. I suspect when ep2 comes out it will be another argument. Trying to watch stuff separately is such a chore...

Having not played the game, I was hyped for this. I really liked it, which was good considering the expectations were high. I didn't realise it was going to fast-forward 20 years though. I enjoy all the breakdown-of-society stuff. We obviously saw some of it... but it was so quick it was more like (as my girlfriend said) "Oh look American's being stupid and not doing what they're told again" because at the end of the day if everyone stayed home it would have been easier, no? :p

I do think the facts behind the fungus thing is not clear at all though. As above, I've not played the game and had I not read about it slightly, it's easy to forget the 60s prelude news show and end up just thinkig you're in another zombie show. Like why when the girl turned up at the QZ weren't the police testing her wearing any protection?

The joke is that Pedro Pascal put his foot down and said "I am not doing another show where I am wearing a mask all the time!" :D

Well the idiots would get infected because face nappies.

Yes I noticed that too but didn't go and check so thanks for confirming!

Gas masks would not stop the fungus plague unless EVERYONE wore them and even then by the time we realized what was happening it would likely be too late to stop mass infections spreading everywhere.

Sorry, I'm being dumb obviously but can someone explain how this fungus is transmitted/caught etc? Without spoilers from the game preferably?
