The Last of Us (HBO, from Creator of Chernobyl) - No game spoilers please

I quite liked the first episode and don't mind Pedro being Mexican, Sarah being black but, for me, Elle really did need to be a younger looking actress (despite thinking that Belle is a very good actress) because the point of the game is that the player (or the viewer watching Joel) should feel protective over her specifically because of her young age - she's a literal child, not a 18/19yo teenager - which Joel eventually becoming a father figure to her, so an actress who doesn't look like a "child" can't create that same visceral "dad protecting a little kid" vibe thats the whole arc of Joel's story and when that fails the rest of the story starts to fall apart.

So yes, Elle appearing to be "young" at 12-14yo (irrespective of actress age) is absolutely essential for the rest of the story to work!
Superbly put

It's tricky because obviously the second game story requires an older actress. I think they've said they don't want to make up content between the games so if they want to go straight into the second they can't have her being that young

Troy Baker (Voice Actor who did the voice of Joel in the game) is on a podcast call Play Watch Listen, the latest episode he talked a bit about this show, i think he has seen it all now. Mentioned that the first episode was originally 2 episodes but they decided to join it together. The rest of the series has shorter episodes. It feels like originally ep 1 was before the time jump, ep 2 is after it.

Makes sense, as usually there would be 10 episodes.

Episode 1 (let's call it), in 2003 was very good and I had a sense of dread through most of it (having played the game at least 3 times).

The
'beginning of the apocalypse'
has been done many times in movies like 'Dawn of the dead' (remake) but this one was done particularly well I thought, and had plenty of scenes from (or nods too), the game.

Episode 2 in 2023 wasn't quite as good but it had to do lots of World building. Setting up of the quarantine zone, Fireflys, FEDRA etc and general state of the World.

I can easily buy Bella Ramsey as a 14 year old in this. All the casting seemed good to me.

Never owned a console, so have never played the game. I enjoyed the long episode and was disappointed when it finished, which bodes well for future episodes. I thought Pedro Pascal and Anna Torv were both excellent and was pleasantly surprised by Bella Ramsey, having only seen her as Lady Mormont in Game of Thrones. Looking forward to episode two :)

Personally found the "episode 2" bit quite weak compared to the first half - far to much stuff was rushed in, in a not very interesting overall narration, but I don't think with the setup it would have been that interesting with a longer build of those elements either - I'm hoping they take a more interesting path with it now those elements are in play.

Personally not played the game right through, had a short stint on console but I hate console gaming so didn't stick with it and watched other people play some of it, so have an overall idea but lots of gaps in my knowledge of the story.

First episode is decent enough, not exactly blown away so hope it gets better.

Allie was okay, but if there was ever a case where the face doesn't fit, it's her. She just looks weird, definitely a face for radio. Would be happier if they swapped the her and the actress that played Sarah around. But, it is what it is.
