THE LAST OF US *Spoiler Thread* (Story only discussion)

Keep thinking about this game on and off throughout the day...i really wanna play it again. Such a quality game.

The story, characters, music, dialogue, the opening of the game, the convincing journey and locations they visit...so much to love about this game.

I never really understood the intentions of the guy towards the end:

Forgot his name but the one you meet when hunting the Deer, he seemed to want to help at one point but I can understand why Ellie didn't trust him. I'm pretty sure the way it went was all down to her and her behaviour.

He was a cannibal, pedophile rapist.

What do you think he wanted?

Yeah.

No.

My understanding is that him and the other guy happened across Ellie after she killed the dear. Initially they looked to trade some meat for medicine. As they talked, and as he saw how handy she was with a rifle he put that together with her obvious need for antibiotics...he realised she was the girl, with Joel, who had killed quite a few of their gang. Kinda spiraled from there.

And this.

Ah ok, obviously wasn't paying enough attention at all. I forgot:

That they were chopping up the body's when they captured her. How do we know he was a paedophile though? Is this an assumption based on one scene when he said "you don't know what I'm capable of" and Ellie said to Joel "he was going to..".

Overall I enjoyed the game quite a bit but the story did not engage me nearly as much as say Heavy Rain did, probably why I couldn't ever remmeber the characters names. I'm not saying the game didn't deserve the reviews it got but I'm not really sure it's a 10/10 for me, probably a 9.

One of the worst endings in a game I've seen, everything else leading upto this point I liked.
The ending is... well, it's
probably very close to perfect. Not because it's enjoyable... it's not! But because they dared to make it a nasty, complicated, gritty end in keeping with the whole adventure. It's the bitterest happy ending I've ever experienced, which is why I love it even though I don't like it.

Of course that's not to say things were perfect by any means. Ignoring gameplay compromises and weaknesses, there were some plot twists which I felt were a bit strained, or where I felt 'dirty' when Joel did things I'd never have done. This game made me feel so involved that when situations like needing to kill a (highly valuable to the species!) surgeon come along I'm looking for non-existent options. That's frustrating.

But it's also totally in keeping with Naughty Dog's chosen style throughout this drama. Joel was always a ruthless, hard-hearted swine, and that's why he was the right man for this mission. Sadly I'm far too nice to have got Ellie to the end of the road, let alone the hospital!

I bought the Last of Us on Sunday 23rd June, and played it every night after work and finally finished it last night. I have not played a game consecutively from start until finish since I was in High School, and was playing the PlayStation Final Fantasy era, Metal Gear Solid, Legend of Zelda’s and the like.

Words escape me. The Last of Us has put my faith back into gaming as a medium which not only stands tall against others, but knocks them down entirely. The storyline is utterly engaging, even more so than the stupidly impressive graphics, which both complement each other exceptionally well. The gameplay was perfect for me on Normal mode. I'm not great at survival horror games, or gaming in general to be honest, and I wanted to enjoy the storyline, so I left it on Normal to enjoy a challenge. I think this was perfect for me.

My girlfriend watched the whole thing with me, and she’s not normally a gaming spectator. She said, and I quote, “I’ll miss the game when you’ve completed it”. That gives some indication of the magnitude of how awesome this game is, even when you’re not playing it.

I won’t be playing it through again just yet, as I’ve got a ridiculous amount of other games I’ve started and need to complete (namely Final Fantasy XII). I also want to spend time sorting out my Animal Crossing New Leaf town and start making the monies!

When I do return to it in a few months I’ll probably try to the hardest difficulty and get annoyed with the game and eternally hate it!

Has this game fallen into my current top ten? Well, yes, it has. Whether it stays there, and stands the test of time, remains to the seen.

I think it just might.

10/10

P.S Drake, your move.

I've seen and heard several people say similar things, and I can absolutely understand it, because the game splits into lots of short, highly dramatic stages which can keep both player and observer immersed.

I can still understand why some people fall out with the gameplay, and the slow pace at times. But for me it's just been the perfect balance between fear, stealth, panic, frustration, and deep satisfaction. I'm just amazed that this game has managed to turn a complete cynic like myself, determined to spend as little as possible on gaming, into a complete fanboy.

I've never been so proud to open myself up to that accusation.

The bad thing though is that it's going to be very hard for anyone to live up to this. Especially Naughty Dog. If I worked there I'd be very happy... and also very worried. :-)

Just completed this... and woah. That was easily one of the best games I've ever played, it had me hooked from start to finish(I even forgot to eat).

I didn't like the ending but I also thought it was a perfect ending. How can anyone not love Ellie? Great character and has overtaken Elizabeth in my favourite companion slot.

I think this is my new favourite game, Naughty Dog never fail to impress.

I also thought the graphics were beautiful and a step above most games this generation.

I finished it last night.

18 hours on normal, did lots of exploring.

Amazing, powerful & emotional (had a lump in my throat more than once)

Gripes - NPC AI was pants at times, as was the bow, but the story more than made up for it imo.

The ending......bitter-sweet, what would you do in that scenario?

It's stayed with me all day and I can't wait to play through again, but I want to finish Ni No Kuni and start Dishonoured first.

The best game of this gen? certainly top 3 for me.

The bow is actually one of the best weapons once you upgrade the range.
I had quite a few embarrassing and frustrating bow failures. But the kills I remember most are all long range head shots with the bow. So satisfying... in a sick and twisted way, obviously. :-)

I think the vast majority of my kills were melee though. Partly because I'm still way off being comfortable with a controller to aim, and partly because it was so much more satisfying... in a sick and twisted way, obviously.

Mmm... there's a theme developing here.

The only thing with the bow is when you first start out with it it's really bad, the arc is really severe and there's hardly any range. After an upgrade though the shots fly much straighter and farther and when fully upgraded there's hardly any arc on your shots at all. Still not quite sure how the retrievable arrows work though, sometimes it seems I can pick my arrows back up and other times not. At first I thought it was due to headshots and body shots but it doesn't seem to matter either way.
