The Liverpool Club Thread. **No Spoilers**

As above, Klopp said in his press-conference today that Gomez should be back playing in 4-6 weeks.

The full accounts aren't released yet but the club have confirmed the record profit mentioned earlier in the thread. It's £125m pre-tax but as I mentioned before, that's massively influenced by the Coutinho sale and how transfers are accounted for.

Origi has a new deal, I'm not surprised by it but despite his heroics last season I'm still very unsure if he will become a top class striker for us
He doesn't need to be a top class striker for us, we've got Firmino. We need a solid back-up, who is happy starting 15-20 games across all comps, will score 96th minute winners vs Everton, a brace in the CL semi vs Barca and a CL final clinching goal. Origi as the 5th option for our front 3 is more than acceptable, we just need to sort the 4th option out now.

I'm thinking the club hope Brewster will be that person. Or at least another option along with Origi.
He'll be another option, nothing more. He's a kid and a kid that's just spent a season injured - he might be part of the first team squad next season but I can't see him featuring that much.

The drop from firmino quality to origi is too much, before you say we can pop mane or salah up top whilst yes thats true besides shaqiri the drop from them two to what's on our bench is still too much.
As I've said for a year now, get another Salah or Mane. We don't need a top class centre forward and one wouldn't join us knowing they have no hope of playing regularly. Origi is ideal for what we need and as good as we can hope for.

Clyne's done his ACL. He's had some really bad luck these last few seasons, having gone from pretty much the first name on the teamsheet for us, on the brink of getting into the England side to barely kicking a ball for what will likely be nearly 3 years by the time he's fit again.

I'd have bet my left nut that he was being sold. We're not loaning him out last January when we're in a battle for the title and CL if there's any chance of him featuring long-term. He was our best defender for a long time but we've moved on now and he's not good enough on the ball to play as a full back in our side anymore. I'm expecting to see Hoever (alongside Gomez) covering Trent this season.

That first part makes no sense. Klopp literally picked Milner ahead of Clyne in the first half of last season and then still let Clyne leave on loan in January so Milner's performances clearly didn't change Klopp's view on where Clyne stood. Even Milner's not likely to feature at RB unless we have a major injury crisis - you've got Gomez and possibly/probably Hoever covering Trent before you even get down to Milner. There's a reason why Klopp's picked Milner at fullback a lot and it's not because Milner's a great defender, it's because fullbacks in our side are very much midfielders and Clyne's just not comfortable enough on the ball.

All the reports were that Clyne was being sold with the likes of Palace and Bournemouth interested. The only thing this injury changes from our point of view is that we're going to miss out on £7-10m from a transfer fee.

A little update on Alisson's injury - no exact timescale given other than "a few weeks". I'd guess we won't see him back until after the International break now but then again, Gomez was only meant to be out for 4-6 weeks last season and that ended up being 4 months.

Couple of bits of news today. The first bit wasn't really news although has been made formal - the plans we have for the Anfield Road expansion (up to 58k) will be allowed to lapse with the club planning to submit new plans that will take the capacity over 60k. This has been known for quite sometime but the club decided to make a formal statement on it. The other news is that Ox has signed a new 4 year contract - fingers crossed he can have a bit of luck with fitness because he can offer us a lot of the things we lacked last season.

I don't think you can tar all agents with the same brush but that was a mad statement to make. He's basically admitting that Liverpool agreed to sell Duncan but that he failed to find a single club that would make a permanent offer. The stuff about stress and mental health is a very dodgy path to go down, especially considering the tweets of his that have since been dug up, on top of various other questionable things.

Not a massive surprise to find out he's also Saido Berahino's agent though.

Liverpool and New Balance headed to court over our kit manufacturing agreement. Liverpool have agreed a deal with Nike for £30m per year + 20% of all sales (briefs from the club valuing this at a total of £70-80m per year) and as part of the current New Balance deal they have the option to match any rival offer which they say they have done but Liverpool have rejected. It would seem the case rests on the exact wording of the current agreement as New Balance simply matching the £30m + 20% doesn't necessarily mean they've matched Nike's offer due to Nike's distribution network and the fact that their offer includes the likes of Serena Williams, LeBron James and Drake marketing Liverpool products.

@BaZ87, Not sure where else this'd be relevant

Given you're a) a Liverpool fan and b) lover of stats

There's an episode of the Freakanomics podcast called "393 - Can Britain Get it's "Great" Back" and at around 40 minutes it has a 15 minutes segment with the Director of Research from LFC discussing his role in data analysis for scouting.
Cheers. I've actually listened to that already. He was interviewed by the New York Times (I think) the other month too - it's incredible to think just how much input one guy can have, despite never watching a player actually play before analysing him.

Big blow to lose Fabinho for such a busy period. I suspect it would have happened anyway but this will probably see us play a 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1 more over the busy Xmas period. With Shaq, Ox, Keita, Lallana, along with Mane & Firmino, we've got lots of players that can play in the 3 roles behind a striker, it makes picking a midfield easier and allows us more opportunity to rest one of the front 3.

The best signing we've made or could make, fantastic news!

When he didn't sign a new deal directly after the CL win, when the club were keen for him to do so, I did start to wonder whether he might be eyeing up a sabbatical in a couple of years time.
And just the other day Gerrard signed a contract extension until 2024 with Rangers.....an alignment for a handover or mere coincidence !
Yea, it'sa coincidence. Unless he proves himself to be an elite manager then FSG won't go near Gerrard. He'd be too powerful and if things didn't go well it would be the board that took the blame for it.

Gerrard will only manage us if he's the right manager for us. FSG don't make emotional decisions and are not going to appoint Gerrard out of sentiment.

On the previous page I mention an interview with one of our analyst's and in that they don't just discuss how the club use stats and data to scout players but how they used it when targeting Klopp too.

I've just got in and all I see is news that he's injured and it's a knee injury. Where's the talk that it's a season ending injury come from?

Everywhere's reporting it as a potentially serious injury and a few places have said it's his knee, including the Guardian and The Athletic. The Guardian have since removed the article though, not sure why.

Southgate's having a press conference at 6:30 so we'll know more then unless the club announce anything first.
Ok, lets wait and hear what the news is. Everyone's serious is different and there's a number of different types of knee injury that isn't another ACL.

Fingers crossed it's not hugely serious for Gomez and just like Ings recent injury it's a 4-5 week job, not 4-5 months. Either way we're not going to sign anybody out of contract. We'll make do until January and then sign Alaba.

Touch wood, we're going to have Fabinho and Thiago back after the Internationals and Keita's back already - we've got enough midfielders to find solutions at CB. I can see us playing 4-2-3-1 a lot more moving forwards with lots of rotations in the 2 midfield spots and at CB. I wouldn't bet against seeing a 3-4-3 at some point with Robertson as a left sided CB too. Thankfully we've won our opening 3 CL games which should give us the opportunity to rest players in midweek.
