*** The MacBook Pro (Mid-2009) Thread ***

Don't think the world is quite ready for that yet. Probably will be Apple that do it though as they ditched the floppy disk when it was still in regular use.

Laptops have been available without optical drives for years. My missus parents have an old Dell D400(?) which doesn't have an internal optical drive, nor the option/space to add one. Does the Macbook Air have one?

yeah mac seem to be aready doing that with the air, love the idea of using your imac's cd drive to read cd's. but dose it work if you have a macbook air and a pc? it kind of ruins the point of having a small laptop if you use cd's a lot and have to carry around a exsternal cd reader.

Most laptops and all expect the MacBook Air in Apples range do.

I don't think the end of the optical drive is on the horizon just yet.

hoping them come with cips that can be added into the laptop like a camera card would be inserted. just need to get them really fast and hold enough data. no idea if that would even be possible but i like the idea :)

I've only ever used the optical drive in my MBP once and that's when I installed Leopard. Whether the laptop had one or not wasn't one of the deciding factors when I was investigating which laptop to buy, in fact I didn't even consider it.

I suppose it would be more of a stretch to leave the optical drive out of models that are reasonably likely to be someone's only computer (MacBook, MacBook Pro), because they are needed (at least occasionally).

It would be cool to have the choice to (officially) put other components in its place, though :)

Speaking of optical drives, Apple still can't be arsed with Blu-Ray..

Does anyone know what model/manufacturer the HDDs in the MacBook Pros are? I'm just weighing up the pros and cons of paying the Apple tax to upgrade to the 7200RPM over getting the standard 5400 and upgrading myself.

I'm not really up to speed with HDD tech so I'm wondering if whatever 500GB 7200RPM drives that are actually on the market are worth having at this moment in time.

wont it be a lot harder to change the ram and hdd since the very recent updates to the laptop line. apple have now included a non user replaceable battery so i think we'd be unable to get inside the laptop without ripping it apart

Nope. There's a lot of fuss about nothing when it comes to the new design.

It'll be business as usual when it comes to user-replaceable parts. You'll just need a screwdriver and some patience, that's all.

i'll be getting the 13" as soon as i can afford it. i had a 12" powerbook years back and it's the best machine i've ever owned. can't wait.

Am I right in thinking you can buy the MBP with the HE discount, buy your iPod touch, get rebate, sell ipod and put cash towards MBP = Super cheap MBP? Because that would get you the base spec 13" for a little over £600 if so.. That's a deal if I ever saw one.

MBP and other bits prepared for shipping today - still has a estimated delivery date of 22-23 - think yours will get here before mine Slogan :P
