*** The MacBook Pro (Mid-2009) Thread ***

Be glad it's not Scott Forstall coming with a new iPhone.

That would be an awkward moment

It would be very awkward given that there's no way I'd be able to justify spending that much on it.

Infact, Forstall may be the reason I decline Steve's offer of joining the Apple team.

Anyway, when it finally does arrive and to keep this post somewhat related, I will take pictures of it. But I'll not be putting bread in the SD slot.

Still only one firewire port on the 15" models :(

Still a comparitlvey low res screen on the 15" models :(

Come on Apple, those two things could be very easy to "upgrade".

What were the chances of the 15" MBP getting two Firewire ports when the 17" only has one? I don't find the screen res that bad on the 15".

You can daisy chain FW800, alright it won't be full speed for both but there was only ever 1x FW800 and 1x FW400 on the models anyway. What are you running off the FW bus anyway?

I was worried about the resolution after coming from the HD res 17" MBP and it honestly wasn't an issue. If anything the screen was perfect.. any higher than 1680 x 1050 and I think you'd struggle to read it without resolution independence.

They could if they wanted, but they probably see no reason to spare the expense while the majority of users seem happy. You can always submit a suggestion to Apple if you're that bothered by a design aspect.

Not saying the res is *that* low, but most PC laptops costing the same have had higher res screens for some time now.

Though it is a very nice panel :)

IMO the 17" should certainly have 2 FW ports, as should the 15" - they are aimed typically at audio/video/photographic professionals who generally have a need for such things.

This is the main reason why I'm still holding on to my good old non-unibody MBP, I have thousands of pounds worth of audio interfaces and hard drives that I'd need to buy express cards to use with the newer MBP - though can't do that as I also have Apogee interfaces that need to use the card slot :(

Seriously thinking my next laptop might be an IBM ThinkPad.

@EVH - I know I can daisy chain things, but its generally not considered a good idea when you're trying to record 48ch (sometimes more) of 24/96 audio. :)

I definitely agree.

You have to remember that it's 15.4" and not 15", so, compared to the 17", it has:

82% of the area, yet
56% of the pixel resolution

Weak!

I bet it's purely down to Apple being able to buy 15.4" 1440x900 panels a lot cheaper rather than anything better being "too high density".

I just brought my new macbook pro, its the base 15" model and im a switcher so my impressions are that its amazing. I phoned up the day after they were added to the store and the day after i ordered it was delivered :).

There's a fair bit of grumbling going on over at MacRumors about the SATA bus speed in the new MacBook Pro line-up. It's all a bit over my head if I'm honest, although I get the general gist of it being a 'bad thing' when it comes to using a SSD and something of a downgrade from the previous MBP line-up.

Has anyone actually taken delivery of one of the revised models yet and/or is in a position to comment?

Just been to the Trafford Centre store, new MBPs are very, very nice. Had a check and they're running the old SATA-I interface at 1.5Gb/s. Although using a standard HD this won't make a difference to you. It's if you start using SSDs that it will matter, but it seems Apple might put the SATA-II (3Gb/s) for when you get a BTO SSD machine. Unfortunately, I forgot to test this out.

I ordered the 17" - should have it next week.

The screen resolution and ExpressCard swung it for me over the 15". I don't like how they've cheaped out with the SD slot. ExpressCard lets you have every type of media (including SD), eSATA, USB3 in the future, and a lot more.

Upgrading from a trusty 2006 MacBook.

Just got back from Bluewater with my new 13" macbook pro. Very nice bit of kit. Decided on the 13" because of portability concerns and it being a fair bit cheaper. It has the 1.5 gb/s s-ata but as I'm not going to be using solid state I cant see it making much difference!

Thats terrible, just checked my MBU 13 form last year and its 3.0 which is good cos i want an ssd in the near future! I cant understand why they would do it to be honest.

So they're putting SATA1 in these, instead of SATA2?

Oh dear.. :o

They have the same chipset as the previous Unibody MacBooks - with SATA2 capability. But a lot of people are reporting 1.5GBPS in System Profiler.

Still reading the thread but I'm hoping it's a software balls up more than anything.

But if you order the ssd model its 3.0, i dont think its a balls up.

I bet it is a software issue - I doubt there are many chipsets being produced in volume today that don't support SATA2.

There's been no proof of that though. People on MacRumors are spouting everything and anything without backing it up. If it has appeared in proof form then I haven't seen it yet but the BTO machines with SSDs (supposedly...) have a July shipping estimate.

If Apple are going to clock down the thing because I didn't order an over-priced SSD with them then they can forget about it. That's a trend I can see to be a very damaging one (punishing people for not going with BTO) and one I won't stand for.

I wouldn't have minded so much but I did plan to put an SSD in my MBP.
